looking for childhood friends:

  • everquest player Mixelplex, guild Sun Blade, server Fennin Ro
  • Mary Caitlin McF., moved from Virginia to Latvia when she was 10, went to college in Finland

I keep wondering where they ended up in life (it's me, Melissa from Virginia)

Oaktag,

@0xabad1dea
You could try tossing in some hashtags in case they're following their handle or the game name?

Closing out the year on Plane Sailing Games with another blog post (2 in 2 days! Amazing!)

This one is about 'probability traps'. As designers we need to think about probability, but sometimes we can fall into this trap if we are not careful. Read on!

This is apparently only 2 years old - feels older - but it still makes me giggle.

What 'old' thing makes you giggle?

Years ago I found the perfect everyday handbag.

Convertible to be a cross body, backpack or shoulder bag.

Ideal number of pockets.
Ideal pocket placement.
Ideal size.
Ideal weight distribution.

Can't even remember the last time I left the house, but woke up today to discover important handle clasp is irretrievably broken & unfixable.

RIP my perfect bag.

And OF COURSE the company that made it doesn't make it anymore and rare second hand ones are exorbitantly priced

.😭 👜

Oaktag,

@Faintdreams
Oof I feel you

I found a perfect purse, used it until I wore though part of it. Found second perfect purse from an entirely different manufacturer/material, it was with a few friend purses in slightly different styles, I bought 4 of them...

Then switched to wearing only pants with pockets deep enough for a phone, ebooks so no need for a paperback, the new batch of purses lurk in a drawer

Last night someone from a group chat full of hackers @'d me: "I'm thinking of a string that's 16 characters long, any guesses? It ends in two underscores.".

I immediately knew they'd found the easter egg in a Python module I wrote.

It adds a hidden attribute.

module.__trans_rights__ == '🏳️‍⚧️'

Oaktag,

Nice, that someone found it, and that you left it!

    Hey I'm just some rando but I used to work as a scientist researching addiction and saw graphs that nicotine was the hardest substance to quit, worse than heroin, alcohol, meth, all of it. It's cool that you quit for a bit and I hope you'll do so again sometime!

    A TV documentary just stated that one in eight people who take a DNA test discover that the identity of their father is not who they thought it was - which.. whoa.

    That seems like a lot! 👀

    Oaktag,

    @Faintdreams
    I've heard of this and I think it's an old stat from back when you took a DNA test not for fun, but because your parentage was in doubt

    Finally found a keyboard which does glide typing!

    I've been using OpenBoard for ages but it hadn't been updated in a while. So I've switched to this fork which has lots of new features (and one of my Pull Requests).

    That looks quite cool, but I'm not seeing how to install it... I've installed apks but this seems like it's probably a step or two beyond that :blobnervous:

    Sad, but...

    "Heard of a cool tech-bro-weeding interview technique the other day. A male and female engineer conduct the interview session together. If, when the female engineer asks the candidate a question, he directs his answer to the male engineer, then he's out. They said it happens a lot"

    Oaktag,

    Yep I've literally seen this when hiring, super easy filter though still annoying to the female interviewer

    Greetings everyone!

    I'm Simon Tatham, free software developer based in Cambridge, UK. Best known for PuTTY and a collection of puzzle games; various other things largish and smaller. Mostly tend to start my own projects rather than joining existing ones. (I think just because that's my idea of fun.)

    This is my first time dipping my toe into short-form social media. (I was never on the birdsite.) Probably expecting to post random tech musings, with occasional maths.

    Oaktag,

    @simontatham
    Omg! The puzzle collections have been one of 3 games on my phones for years and years! Just Saturday I was in an hour-long line at a festival where there were too many people for the internet to work, and I entertained an 8-year-old with Flood!

    Thank you very much!

    What could you do with a chimney / gas furnace exhaust pipe once you remove all of your gas appliances and no longer need an exhaust pipe? Simply sealing it up is boring. In our house, the gas boilers are in the basement, so what could you do with a connection between the basement and the roof? Ideas:

    • Solar tubes - Light the basement without power use, electronics or moving parts.
    • Windcatcher - Turn the basement into a shabestan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shabestan - Needs qanat as well, though.
    Oaktag,

    @skyfaller
    We have a "cable run" in our house that goes through every floor and makes it easier to get cat-6 from the router to each WAP

    Might be a fire hazard tho

    Are you missing the experience of random meaty information from experts? I'm on a weekly email list from , "The World's Leading Insurer", and I highly recommend it!

    It's easy to ignore, but if you feel like clicking in, you can hear about the in , or the latest in for , or the dangers of fumigating grain in transit... And it's all written for people doing work.

    If I was a writer, or running a or game, I would have great story seeds from this.

    Anyway, they're so web 1.0 that to sign up you need to go to https://www.gard.no/web/frontpage and fill in a form, but I think it's worth it.

    Usual stuff. Coyotes and owls and hawks can endanger pets. Every once in awhile you hear about mountain lions or bears. Raccoons fear nothing. Black widow spiders are not to be poked.

    I'm going from memory since I only spent my first 20 years in Colorado, but I think they're not super common. I didn't see one except when a boy brought a jar of them to school to scare us all.

    There may be rattlesnakes on the plains, but I never saw those either. Most snakes are friendly types.

    Oaktag,

    @0x00string
    Oh, and there are ticks. I don't know if they have Lyme... Hopefully not? And there may be leeches in some places. I think that's it? I don't think fire ants and such have made it that far north.
