What disturbed me most about listening to the Supreme Court questions in yesterday's hearing was the repeated demands for responses to the threat that other states could kick other candidates off ballots willy-nilly. The case is before the SC BECAUSE the highest court in CO found Trump guilty of insurrection and - because of this - kicked him off the ballot

Those questions contain in their essence an implication that the rule of law no longer holds sway in the US.

Remittancegirl,
@Remittancegirl@mstdn.social avatar

Since when does any Justice of the Supreme Court predicate their rulings on the possible misuse of a law?

This is the era of Trump and a GOP, and a significant proportion of the US public having decided that, in effect, they are no longer a country under the rule of law and must make rulings out of fear of misrule.

Kavanaugh is too intellectually deficient to understand his questions underscored his own powerlessness and ineffectiveness

Remittancegirl,
@Remittancegirl@mstdn.social avatar

Don't get me wrong, I am not under the misconception that there is absolute and fair application of the law in the US.

But once the highest court in the land uses as their premise for a ruling an absence of law as a generality, as a premise for a ruling, they have made themselves an absurdity.

I sometimes wonder if all this language assist stuff - sentence completion, word choice suggestion, etc. is going to end up rendering half the language tired clichés.

Or rather, that our languages will split into factions of those who allow computers to determine what to say for them, and those who stubbornly resist and therefore formulate rather odd sentences just to spite the algorithm.

I'm posting this, because I occasionally need to remind myself of this, and perhaps you do to:

The things that other people do that piss you off are often not designed to annoy you. They're the way that other person has formulated to get through the life they have.

It's often the only way they know how to cope with the cards they've been dealt.

@inthehands @StillIRise1963 @FitsofPique @Peternimmo @katmckatniss @BlackAzizAnansi @paul_ipv6 I think we have arrived at a point in history where it is wise to assume abuse and cruelty from corporations other power brokers.

That race is a cultural construction doesn't stop it from being a political tool used to target and other a convenient scapegoat in pursuit of power.

Although Don and I do not celebrate Christmas, we do have a tradition of having breakfast for lunch. We're having pancakes.

We both agreed that, in our experience, the whole Christmas thing generated completely unnecessary levels of stress and waste. So, for over 35 years, we have eschewed Christmas in favor of brunch.

For those of you who have found a way to make Christmas truly joyous - enjoy! For the rest of you... try pancakes.

I’m forcing myself to watch Johnson’s testimony at the Covid Inquiry.

And my overall takeaway is that he was neither intellectually nor ethically equipped to be Prime Minister but he manages to present this as nothing more than unfortunate timing. A failure of imagination, dedication, responsibility, compassion and competence are spun as hapless innocence.

The single problem is a political class that conflates marketing for leadership.

If a man educated at the best educational institutions in the UK admits he did not have the imagination (or enough familiarity with 20th century history) to conceive of what a viral pandemic might do to his country, it speaks to the reality that those institutions don’t offer a good education but only privilege and nepotism

I'm trying to keep my temper about this, but the media's homages to Henry Kissinger are starting to eat away at my control.

Kissinger was responsible for the deaths of many, many thousands directly, and millions as secondary consequence of his policies.

I think I may be going back to Vietnam.

Today I heard that my very, very dear friend, who I met in the very early days of my time there, has passed away.

June Murphy was the most amazing lady - beautiful inside and out.

She made my life wider and richer in every way.

I'm not sure why, but learning of her death made me cry. I turned to Don and said... "Let's go home."

And neither of us had to specify where home was - we both knew. Saigon is home. And I'm so damn tired of missing it.

Most politicians spend their lives serving themselves.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter spent their lives serving others.

How ironic that one of the only truly 'Christian' Presidents didn't ever boast about it.

Remittancegirl,
@Remittancegirl@mstdn.social avatar

@datn @RickiTarr I don't see how it can be offensive to declare that one finds a writer boring. It's a sincere statement.

Writers have voices, and no one can feel an affinity to all of them.

I too found Infinite Jest a real slog. Even as I recognized the artistry in the writing, it didn't speak to me.

Remittancegirl,
@Remittancegirl@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr @datn I think that's a very good way to frame it.

There are lots of very esteemed writers whose prose I do not connect with. And I find I connect with some very mediocre writers because their particular voice resonates with me. It's so personal.

For the longest time, I was pretty neutral about people who chose to remain on twitter, or who kept that account to post and read career or business stuff.

But, no more.

If you stay on that platform, after its owner's formal embrace of blatant antisemitism, I am disappointed in you.

Yes, I get that it may affect you negatively to quit, but sometimes doing the right thing hurts. That's why there's nobility in it.

Would you consider an audiobook of your novel or short story?

Making one? Sure, would love to. If I could afford it. Don't think it's something I could DIY.
