Morning! That was a pretty rubbish night’s sleep as predicted. I think there might be someone else in the flat now, I can hear movement, I’ll see if there’s anyone about once I’m washed and dressed. My plan is to take the bus to the big campus this morning as I’ve got plenty of time to find the right bus stop. Hopefully a couple of people from my cohort will join me for coffee at 10am before our induction session at 11. That’s the plan, anyway! What is your plan?

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@purplepadma Good luck! That all sounds like it would make me terribly anxious.

Today being Wednesday, I'm not working but I have various odds and ends to do. I should already be out of bed but I fell back to sleep and had messed up dreams.

Been thinking about , this week's theme. Was struggling a bit, but convinced myself this is because I take things too literally, and I don't actually have to find a song that contains 90+ minutes of story.

Here's a story that's kind of interesting, if not for a full-length feature. It's about two boys who are childhood friends, have adventures in the woods, run inside scared of the bugs - but then one suddenly has to disappear in fear of an abusive stepfather, and the other spends his life wondering what became of his friend.

Twitter is collapsing as a platform, but people are turning away from Mastodon. It's a real shame. Personally I don't think Mastodon in its current incarnation will get such a favourable environment for growth. So something probably has to change for Mastodon or for federation before this works. https://botsin.space/

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@Loukas Mastodon (and wider fedi) usage always fluctuates - in the past year and a half, there's been a consistent theme of huge increases when Musk does something stupid, followed by many, but not all, of those new accounts drifting away.

It's like a tide that carries shells towards a beach: with each wave, many shells wash up on the shore, and most are immediately pulled back out to sea; but with each wave, a few shells get left behind and become part of the beach.

More generally, though, I think the idea of any single social media platform becoming truly dominant is dead, if it ever truly existed in the first place (and it's always worth remembering that Twitter was never that big, never so large as its outsize cultural presence in some countries suggested).

Mastodon and other fedi platforms don't have to become huge. They just need to be big enough for the people who want and need to use them, one of many islands in the social media ocean.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@Loukas There was a surge about a week ago, wasn't there? I'm sorry, I've been on holiday so my brain is a bit fuddled, but I was sure there's been a significant surge very recently. Maybe the wave is going back out. There'll probably be another surge soon.

But I don't think direct replacement is ever going to happen. I think the environment is changing, and we're moving towards people being ever more scattered amongst a larger number of smaller platforms. Some of which will be fedi platforms, most will be corporate because, well, they have money.

However, all of this takes time. It's not realistic to expect many millions of regular Twitter users - happy Twitter users who won't move unless they're forced - to move rapidly to a platform which most of them won't have heard of until recently.

And especially not when most of them will already have accounts on at least one of Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok - all of which are vastly bigger than Twitter has ever been. Their friends are already there, in established communities. That's a much bigger draw than Mastodon can ever offer.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@Loukas Um, okay. You said there wasn't a surge, and I said that there had been one, so I'm not quite sure why that isn't a reply.

And I also thought I was replying when I said that I thought it was unrealistic to expect huge numbers of people who like being on Twitter to move in a matter of months to Mastodon, which most of them will know nothing about.

But sure, whatever. Mastodon is failing because it isn't more competitive in a changing market than some enormous global corporations. Fine. Enjoy your day.

I'd be interested to see if anyone has made a website that examines political promises and tallies them up with the outcomes (if any).

For example; in a manifesto a party promises to increase nurses' pay by 15%, but when in government fight the union and only end up giving them 3%.

I've been thinking about why working class people vote Tory, despite them never, never making good on their promises, and would like to see the data on what they do actually provide.

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@DJDarren @eleanorrees People in the north temporarily lending the Tories their vote is one thing (and I'm not defending it!), but why is that they're held up for the most criticism whilst lots of working class areas in the south east and parts of the midlands vote Tory every single time?

What have the Tories ever done for the working class in, say, Essex or Suffolk? There'll still be the same slew of blue on the map after the next election, though, same as always.

The numbers declaring themselves & unable to work continues to rise. This is likely to be a combination of , work-related stress and other conditions.

The solution is not just trying to force these people back to work by cutting working age benefits, but to try & understand what is actually happening in the ... as so often the reach for the stick without actually appreciating what is actually happening to !

Also notice reduction in retirees!

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 Another thing they're incapable of grasping is that, if people need medical treatment in order to return to work (such as surgery on physical injury), and NHS waiting lists are extremely long, then that impacts how many people are unable to work.

I don't believe there's ever been a point at which the Tories have generally understood the link between healthcare and economic prosperity.

So, new polling suggests that at the next , the could end up with a 190 seat majority... now, of course, such projection are just that, projections, and subject to events & change, but....

If was to lead a government with such a majority the key Q. is how would he respond to such 'freedom'?

The worry is that cowed by a hostile media & conditioned by Reeves economic caution ('probity') the party will rule as if it only a small majority... which wold be tragic!

RolloTreadway,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@fkamiah17 @ChrisMayLA6 I tend to think the ideal majority is on the small side, but not tiny. Small enough that a serious organised rebellion can hold the government to account; large enough that a couple of fringe wingnuts on the backbenches can't stop the government functioning.

RolloTreadway,

@Jyoti I would've said no until relatively recently, but I know people now who use dude regardless of gender, so I think it's maybe something that's evolved over time. And now it's fine for everyone.

There's usually a calypso for everything from Lord Kitchener, and he does have one where he moans about his mother-in-law (it was the 1950s, okay), but I've gone instead for Mighty Sparrow with My Brother Tommy
