@aral Even in Germany, it was a gradually escalating process. That's how fascism takes hold. Slowly. People are threatened and intimidated. Others think it isn't happening or won't happen to them. People also decide not to resist because of intimidation. They don't have to use guns. Their lackeys do their dirty work

Every spring for the past 5 or 6 years a pair of wrens has made their nest in a terra cotta fish planter we put it on the deck. I try to plant something in the fish’s mouth to give them cover and we wrap the fish in a wire cage to help keep predators out.

They’ve laid 4 eggs this year and I suspect they will hatch any day. Keeping an eye on them with the wireless I set up. Always a joy to watch them raise their kiddos. 🐦‍⬛

Was at the Library of Congress the other day and visited, for the first time, Thomas Jefferson’s library. At the time they acquired it just over 200 years ago, it was the largest private collection of books in the US. It more than doubled the number of books in the LoC.

It’s SMALL. Jefferson’s entire library, accumulated over a lifetime, was just under 6500 volumes.

I think I have more books than that.

It really drove home how access to information has accelerated, even without the Internet.

@mattblaze He also had a revolving book stand that let him keep up to five books open at a time. Of course, custom made in a woodworking shop on his property by enslaved people.
