Everyone pushing Firefox .. it's definitely more wonky and unstable on my Arch desktop than Chrome

TTimo,
@TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

Not to the point of unusable mind you. It's probably still better for me to stick with Firefox and live with the inconvenience.

Just had one of those horrifying I'm-old-now thoughts... I sometimes use Data from Star Trek as an analogy when talking about AI (like emphasizing that LLMs really aren't Data, even if they occasionally do a good impression of him)

... except I just realized Star Trek: The Next Generation aired before a lot of the people I talk to about this stuff were even born!

TTimo,
@TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

@simon yeah that would work. I tried to explain something with an analogy to photographic plates recently .. that didn't go well.

    I got around to ship an updated set of GtkRadiant binaries with Quake II: Remastered support for Windows https://ttimo.typepad.com/blog/2023/08/gtkradiant-167-package-for-windows-with-quake-ii-remaster-support.html

    Why does everything need a launcher? Just look at how completely useless this is. I click play, it loads, I have to click play again. Why.

    Why the reports of the NIF laser facility achieving thermonuclear fusion are basically breathless bullshit with no likely civilian utility: https://dothemath.ucsd.edu/2023/08/fusion-foolery/

    (Reminder that NIF is run by LLNL, a nuclear weapons research lab. It's just a work-around for the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, to allow tests of H-bomb plasma dynamics without setting off any bombs.)

    Hey ,

    Is anyone out there using FOSS for accounting?

    I'm struggling with Quickbooks desktop (which you can only get as a subscription now, unless you pay four figures for an enterprise license).

    comes highly recommended to me, but I'm loathe to go "" for accounting. Very loathe indeed.

    ?

    Edit: Thanks for all of the feedback so far, updates and clarification following in a reply...

    ...

    TTimo,
    @TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane don't use though. Completely overpriced.

    TTimo,
    @TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane if you are a small biz, like a bakery maybe with inventory and possibly payroll then I guess it would be ok.

    TTimo,
    @TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane I'm a software freelancer, I just send invoices and pretty much don't purchase anything. So it wasn't worth the $30.

    TTimo,
    @TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane I switch to waveapps (not FOSS) which does everything and is free .. I don't remember if I looked at freshbooks.

    TTimo,
    @TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane yes it has a full journal and ledger etc. I switched a year and a half ago, and haven't run into anything I was doing in Xero that I can't do in Wave.

    TTimo,
    @TTimo@mastodon.social avatar

    @RL_Dane yeah it'll learn and categorize for you (can be hit or miss) and do bank account reconciliation.

    A Stitch in Time, written by none other than Andrew Robinson himself, is now available for purchase on Audible and narrated by Robinson as Garak.

    The book is based on a set of journal entries Robinson penned as a way to further explore his character during his time on the set of Deep Space Nine. https://www.audible.com/pd/A-Stitch-in-Time-Audiobook/B0C8VHYFJ5
