I've just voted in this. If you're a member of the National Trust, you should too - and you should be careful not to vote for the swivel-eyed loons of the 'Restore Trust' insurgency, or their regressive resolutions.

"Have you voted in the National Trust AGM yet? It’s quick and easy - all you need is your device, your membership card, and five minutes.

  • Go to http://cesvotes.com/nt23
  • Enter your membership details.
  • Vote for up to 5 Council election candidates.
  • Vote on each resolution"

@RickGaehl Don't think I'd use the word "insurgency". Makes them sound like some grass-roots guerilla organisation fighting to Stick It To The Man.

Whereas actually they're an astroturfed dark-money group with connections to 55 Tufton Street.

An apology to the whole fediverse

I wanted to apologize to everyone as I’ve been rude and harsh with many of you as of late. Regardless of if it was in response to disrespect or not, that is not in line with my own moral views, it was wrong of me.

My philosophy moving forward is no matter how bad a person I may think you are, no matter how cruel or deserving it may seem you are of an attack, my options will be to respond with compassion or not at all. That said I will continue to call out bad actors in a blunt but constructive way. I will try my best that should I provide a personal criticism I do so with a tone of respect and kindness.

While I can say the recent change have been due to some pretty monumental stress and life changes I’ve been dealing with (a physical assault and death threat from the Israeli Mob), that does not make me any less accountable. But I do want people to know why.

My deepest apologies to anyone effected, both on and off. I will try better to be more compassionate in my words and actions moving forward and should anyone feel I fail to do that I welcome you to point me back to this post.

Sorry to hear you've had a rough time recently. Genuine best wishes, I hope you can get through without too much scarring.

I honestly don't understand this. How can simply informing jurors of their rights according to the law, which the judge should presumably do anyway, constitute an offence of any sort, never mind contempt of court? And why is the decision about whether to prosecute made by a Tory MP rather than the Crown Prosecution Service?

Local congresswoman Nancy Mace said: “How in the hell do you lose an F-35? How is there not a tracking device and we’re asking the public to what, find a jet and turn it in?”

It's a stealth fighter! Adding a tracking beacon would be self-defeating: if it's made intentionally easy for the USMC to find, that can be used by enemies.

US military asks for help to find missing F-35 fighter jet after ‘mishap’ sees pilot eject:

NICE! As much as I hate the right every once in a while they do something good. Apparently now states must issue permits to carry a handgun to anyone who requests it unless they have an explicit reason not to (like they have a criminal history)... This makes all states "shall issue" states!

This is great, am really excited to see the being expanded!

https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-guns-decision-second-amendment-new-york-2022-6

VoxDei,
@VoxDei@qoto.org avatar

@freemo Firstly, this is from last year, it's not new. Secondly, it's based on some bizarre legal theory, creating a legal principle that did not previously exist and does not make sense: specifically, that the state can pass gun control laws only if there is are "historical roots" for the law in question. So it's (again) the court making up the law it wants, rather than the law it's got.

Thirdly though, and most importantly, why is this a good thing? You're a gun nut, I get it, and that's fine - you're a responsible gun owner and all that.* But why does the fact that responsible owners are responsible mean that it's a good thing for everyone to be given a gun for the asking, even if there is no reason to believe they know what they're doing or will be responsible? We don't give cars to people who haven't demonstrated they can drive safely, for the good and sufficient reason that in incompetent hands they're lethal, and cars aren't even designed to be lethal weapons.

*Personally, I don't get why you would have a need to carry a gun in public, and open carry in particular is physically intimidating to others in the same way that walking around with a large and aggressive dog is. So I must say I think it's particularly anti-social. But that's not a safety issue, merely a courtesy one.

VoxDei,
@VoxDei@qoto.org avatar

@freemo A license requiring you know what you're doing and know how to be responsible in no way infringes on the right to bear arms.

VoxDei,
@VoxDei@qoto.org avatar

@ihavenopeopleskills @freemo I would take issue with the idea that anyone (certainly any significant number of people, there may be edge cases) genuinely needs a gun immediately for legitimate purposes. Even more so if you exclude reasons that aren't caused by the wide availability of firearms in the first place - I'm much less likely to feel I need one to protect myself if the likely threat doesn't have one. Moreover the 2a protects the right to bear arms, not to be able to obtain one instantly.

Good grief, the lack of consent or information for DNR notices is ridiculous
Do not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (DNACPR) decisions https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/do-not-attempt-cardiopulmonary-resuscitation-dnacpr-decisions/

VoxDei,
@VoxDei@qoto.org avatar

@antlerboy My wife is a doctor, and she spent time during her GP specialist trainiing working in an A&E department. DNR notices are often misunderstood. So is CPR, which is not the Hollywood push-on-their-chest-a-few-times-and-they-wake-up-fine-with-a-gasp that we see on TV.

Let's be clear here. CPR is horrific. It is a massive bodily invasion involving broken ribs, physical trauma, an utter lack of dignity and while if successful it might leave you alive, it might also leave you a vegetable if your brain was starved of oxygen for too long. If performed on your frail ninety-eight year old grandmother with dementia it might truly be a fate worse than death. Possibly followed not that long after (and yet much, much too long after) by actual death as a result of the trauma.

Doctors aren't going to give you a DNR because they can't be bothered. They're going to do it because they believe CPR in your case is wrong. In the vast majority of cases they're not going to make the decision to complete one, either you or your next of kin will.

The NHS struggles to find the language to explain it, but they exist and have the policies around them they do for a good reason, and that reason isn't that the doctors caring for you can't be bothered.

VoxDei,
@VoxDei@qoto.org avatar

@antlerboy I apologise, I should have considered that your post might have been triggered by personal circumstances. You post so many wide-ranging things, I thought you'd just read something. Sincere apologies and whatever the situation is I'm sorry about that too. I hope things turn out as well as they can.

VoxDei,
@VoxDei@qoto.org avatar

@antlerboy No problem all, I still definitely should have considered that that might have come from somewhere personal! I'm glad your Dad is OK - I know from experience that leaving hospitalised elderly people overnight without liquids can have consequences.

There are definitely a variety of problems with the system, I'm far from saying it's perfect! It's just that DNRs in particular are often misunderstood. It's an emotive topic.
