@RiversideBryan Some butterflies are camera shy. Cameras may make them anxious.

Hiding the camera behind a screen won't work - butterfies have special sensors that detect cameras closer than about 3 meters. The shots you selected are impressive! Perhaps the butterfly was so engrossed in what it was doing that it didn't sense the camera for an instant.

@RiversideBryan It is very cool! Blow it up so that you're getting a much latger image and take bits of it such as the dark streaks n the concrete wall under the railing and you've got a unique neutral (dark) background for a composite image. Same for the sidewalk, only it's less unique.

Can we please have a setting in the administrator panel to set the character limit for a Mastodon instance?

The current lack of such a setting does nothing apart from create a two-tier fediverse where folks who have the time to maintain their own Mastodon fork and folks who use other ActivityPub servers can write as much as they like whereas everyone else is limited to 500 characters. We’re not kids; make the option accessible and let instance owners decide for themselves.

@aral Whatever the solution ends up being, please include that limit (that value) it the "about" for the application (and) instance since one can override the other. This discussion has been going on for a year or more without a clear answer beyond "it's not my problem."

Marketplaces do not self-correct. Ecosystems do.

A marketplace is not an ecosystem. It is merely a single organism, a megafauna, whose sole purpose is to consume and grow as much as possible.

An ecosystem on the other hand has no inherent growth-imperative. The primary objective of an ecosystem is equilibrium; circular exchange of energy. A secondary objective is emergent diversity for the sake of adaptability & robustness.

Make ecosystems, not marketplaces 🌱

@erlend I think this topic is something that everyone (far and wide) should understand better. We have an opportunity to eliminate a cancer while it's still in stage 1 or 2, but before it jumps to stage 3 or 4.

@RiversideBryan One of the really nice things about living in a warmer climate is that there are a lot of flowering plants.

Spring is beautiful in the PNW. The rest of the year it's very green and lush, but many of the flowers only bloom in the spring. (The moss is very green all year long and grows on literally everything.)

📷 The leaf hit the windshield and, not knowing what it was, I had a panic response, then slowed down and pulled off the road. It stuck there while my heartbeat returned to normal, then flew over the roof as I pulled away.

I love , but I can't seem to achieve even a fraction of the speed that other knitters work at. On top of that, if I knit for too long, my elbows start to hurt.

I'm going to try out with my mom's old loom, and I'm hoping that this will be easier for me.

I'm also considering saving up for a knitting machine, since I really do love the fabric that knitting produces.

@leafygreens @knitting @fiberarts There are many different ways to knit. There is no single "right" way. I tried (needle) knitting and found it to be difficult, slow, and frustrating. Later, I tried loom knitting. It's been around for a long time.

At first I tried a craft loom from a discount store. It was easy, fast, and produced nice fabic. I immedately made a blanket for a full sized bed. Then I wanted a better loom. That was 10 years ago and haven't stopped. Now I use both methods.

@Jdreben It might be a good idea to mention that just because TPTB ask (demand) that unethical code be added (patched into) the application doesn't put all resposibility in the requestor. The Developer shares in that resposibilty -- keep that in mind when writing/changing code.

@cloudguy Marketing types will disagree, but many, many listen to podcasts. AM/FM (MW/VHF in other parts of the world) suck in the US. It's so much better to listen to a podcast or audio book.

I'm a firm believer in podcasts, RSS feeds, and audio books. I'm not alone, there are a lot of us.

    Things I didn't know I need.

I found this tiny foldable meter stick in a gift shop. It's only 50 cm fully extended.

I prefer straight measure devices to measure my knitting as I think I get better results compared to tape measures. My mom has a foldable stick with 100 cm, which is half size compared to the regular ones and much more usable in s knitting context but I've never found one myself.

This one is even better for putting in my knitting bag.

    @FanCityKnits @knitting @fiberarts I love it!! I'll have a look next time I head for the shops.

Right now I use two a dressmakers tape measure and a Carpenter's 12 foot steel roll-up tape measure. Once on a very large project I took a ridiculously long landscaping roll-up measure (50 feet) to measure the project during my knitting group session. The project was a full sized blanket.

@cloudguy In the US we fight the food additives, bad fats, and high-fructose sugar. We are told it's to improve flavor. I think it's to keep costs down, increase carb content (carb addiction), and cover the foul taste of the crap they add to the "food."

The cops are investigating a cop who, during his investigation of another cop who had hit a pedestrian while going 74mph in a 25mph zone, said, "She was 26 anyway. She had limited value." At this point, they didn't even know whether the victim would survive or not.

There is no reforming an occupying force that sees the public who pays their lavish salaries and perks as disposable trash without value.

Many cops are good. What happens when faced with a bad one? Report it and stay on the job? Let it go and stay on the job?

Follow this behavior over time and see where it leads.
