David Leonhardt is arguing that the is truly over now that deaths from all causes have returned to normal. And that is good news. But ...

On the graph in his story, you can clearly see the excess deaths going to 0 or close to it multiple times in the past few years ... and then going back up again.

It's the middle of summer. The worst outbreaks happen in winter. Immunity seems like an uncertain/waning thing.

re last boost: my current fedex delivery person is an older lady who is not in great shape, but brings my heavy packages of kitty litter and cat food down my path to my porch rather than throw them out somewhere on the 1/4 mile driveway like the last guys did. She told me they don't give them trucks with air conditioning. Seriously, rich people who own companies are maintaining their lifestyles at the expense of the health of their workers, and don't care about their deaths.

And this is the hottest year on record by far...

And the oceans are heating up faster than any of us expected...

Does that mean that we're about to have the worst hurricane season in history? Are we likely to see the biggest storm ever at some point this year?

Or does the variance within years make that unlikely? Is there some feedback that makes it hard for storms to get bigger than cat 5?

@ai6yr I need a new backup to the backup - I have solar panels and a battery bank and a big propane generator for when there's not enough sun. I was thinking about converting my backup gas Honda (with a ganked carburetor) to propane, but I might just sell it and buy a propane. Did you convert it yourself?

@ai6yr My truly excellent hardware store doesn't do the conversions, and I don't think I can, but they're recommending a BE generator, it's a Canadian company just over the border from me. It's just for emergencies, which hopefully will not happen but the two times it has, I'm snowed in so can't go out for gas. Still thinking.

@ai6yr I'm in the US though, but maybe they don't distribute broadly? My first generator was a Generac Ecogen, and I can't warn people away from them strongly enough. Died after two years, impossible to find anyone to work on it, and then I found a zillion Better Business Bureau complaints against them. They're getting into the small propane generator business. :/

Junuary is subsiding, all the critters are out - a young small tiger swallowtail and a bigger one - I know the wings are the glamour shots but I love seeing the bodies. And I have a very brave chipmunk who came right up to me so I gave extra seeds. edit: you can see the big butterfly’s tongue
