I made an observation about myself lately. As I age, the vocabulary that I use off the top of my head becomes more and more limited and often repeated. I wonder why that is 🤔

I don't read books as much as I used to, but I read a lot of articles and and go through a lot of documentation (among a wide variety of topics and projects)

If I want to write a story, I have to sit there and think for an extended period of time to get the right words out.

Is this normal, or is this something that happens naturally as we age? I wonder if some of the medication I'm on can make my general thought processes more difficult.

@douglasvb @WXFanatic @ai6yr I’ve always been a big book person, but also struggling with concentration. Sometimes I read a really easy fast-paced book to kind of jumpstart me into something more demanding. It doesn’t always work but I feel better for having read something.

Since leaving Twitter, I've been trying to figure out what my journalism-y socials look like. (Threads: A sad Potemkin village where I just share articles. Bluesky: A fun, bitchy hotel cafeteria that still seems ill-suited to news.) I've been trying to use Mastodon for more hard news stuff, but I'm having a hard time getting my feed to be both active and relevant.

So I'm trying a few experiments to see if I can rejig my good. If you've got good journalism follow suggestions, send em my way.

@ai6yr @justinling This definitely, people are less likely to follow folks who only want to perform in front of an audience.
it’s very sex-segregated here, too, which I personally find frustrating. If I scroll down someone’s timeline and they’re only in discussions with other men, I tend to not follow them. If they don’t boost other people at least occasionally, I don’t follow them. If they’re only boosting men, I don’t follow them.

@petergleick I’m in the north cascades, and our heat was not terrible this summer but our average first frost date is October 15, and we’ve only had a few nights get as low as the 40s :/

I suspect he's going to leave here soon. 🤷 (thought MAYBE he'd take it in stride and try to engage honestly here, but no such luck. My apologies for misreading how he would react.)

@ai6yr a) he only really engaged with people who were into talking about how aggrieved he was, b) he didn’t engage with any of us who were letting him know his applet was broken and his posts were incomplete, c) if you google him there are a million photos of his face and articles that say he’s “internet famous” - he’s obviously pretty smart but so incredibly full of himself. I don’t see what he adds here that isn’t covered by people who aren’t jerks?

    @jeffgilchrist do you take questions? I got J&J because I’m very allergic to PEG, so Moderna is off the table. I have a pretty severe stomach reaction to all forms of sodium phosphate in foods, but not asthma or hives or anything. How would I find out if Novavax (which has sodium phosphate) would be safe for me?

    Please boost -- Mastofriends, can you point me to a primer on home furnace/AC replacement (PG&E electric, local supplier propane)? In foothills of , my low temps are 28F a few nights/winter. I need to learn quickly about IRA tax credits and energy-efficient techs. I need conclusions, not deep comprehension. Thanks so much. Pic shows the hole in my (now red-tagged) heat exchanger (which served faithfully for possibly 30+ years)

    @PaulWermer I’m looking into what type of heat options a heat pump can give - I’m off grid and have wood heat, but won’t be able to handle that forever. I hate mini-split lukewarm stuffy air blowing, and I think it gets too cold here for it - do you know of radiant options? @sciencewrighter @ai6yr

    Someone stuck a "trash bin cleaning service" ad on my trash can today. I used to wonder "who cares what someone's trash can smells like--it's a TRASH CAN!" until talking to all of my relatives over the age of 65.

    @ai6yr I don't understand it, not bothering to make what's a really small effort.
    We had yard waste when I lived in Seattle 20 years ago, it was great! You paid to have it picked up, then you could pay for bags of compost they made with it :)
