New releases on have been comparably sparse recently, which gave me the time to look at some of them before they got lost in a flood of new ones — even though I spent way less time on it than usual (and than I would have liked to, but that's life).

I didn't find the time to write about them, though, but at least put my favourite iterations into a deca gallery (a pity they don't (yet?) support base chain).

Long time I didn't post anything.
Let's start again with this p5js wip.

@antoniowerli I hope the huge changes are good ones! I'm looking forward to seeing what will come out of this WIP.

@antoniowerli Phew, I imagine a trans–atlantic move is a logistical nightmare! I hope you got all your stuff with you again.😅

1/4 "Barbarians" by Jacek Markusiewicz impresses me like no other recent work of has.

The images of majestic mountain slopes and neatly arranged fields – with occasional buildings strewn in between them – at first feel strangely detached and bland, thanks to a distant, aerial point of view and bleached, bright colours. Yet the way the landscapes are unexpectedly interrupted by smooth, deep, geometrical gashes appears alien and out of place.

boringold,
@boringold@genart.social avatar

2/4 This juxtaposition of nature and incomprehensible architecture gives rise to feelings of awe, wonder and sorrow, and reminds me a lot of what I feel when I look at the artist's previous masterpiece "Hollow", while aesthetic and subject immediately made me think of @monotau's equally astonishing 2022 project "Cradle".

"Hollow"
"Cradle"

Digital artwork. A computer generated landscape of mountains and sea, dominated by two huge, slanted pillars made from porous stone–like material. A huge, reflective orb is nestled between the structures.

boringold,
@boringold@genart.social avatar

3/4 The title implies a hierarchy of cultural development; in the description, Markusiewicz explains how the concept of barbarism always derogatorily refers to "the other". He leaves open who the barbarians are in the context of these images, however.

Are they the people living in the tiny buildings between the invasive structures? Or are the structures the signs of a barbaric intrusion into a peaceful civilization living there? What other interpretations could there be for us?

#6

Digital artwork. A computer generated aerial view of a mountain ridge near the bottom of the image and a plane filled with smooth, regular gashes and structures that rise like towers from the ground, casting long shadows.
Digital artwork. A computer generated aerial view of a landscape dominated by a smooth, circular chasm surrounding the central, bowl-shaped part of it. The surface of the canyon is white and featureless.

4/4 Personally, I like to see the outputs as orbital reconnaissance images of a newly discovered world, taken by spacefaring explorers far away from home, as they stumble upon the unmistakable leftovers of an ancient, advanced civilization.

The muted, reduced colours and patina of noise that covers most of @_nekropunk's minimal projects result in unique, vintage works that often combine illustration and generative elements. "Viadukt", "Skalka" and the recent minimal, magical "grain:street" and "Elektrobotanika" are wonderful works, but my favourite is the older "Mind docks sorting station".

"Light Beams" by @jzlabs (Jason Ting) is an enchanting exploration of light and colours that might well have been inspired by the light installations of Dan Flavin. The iterations that I like most are the ones with contrasting colour temperatures, and sticks out to me as especially harmonious.

The images of "Aithérios" by @zjorge can appear to show a lift or a fall, can be sparsely populated or tightly packed, but they all convey a sense of translucent weightlessness. Iteration feels special to me in the way it highlights two of its elements in bright white.

"unTie" by Samuel Yan is complex and versatile, fitting the concept of visualizing our inner thoughts and feelings.

"unTie #2", an abstract digital artwork. Two dissolving streams of geometric particles reach towards a point near the center of the canvas. The particles are blue and yellow, the background is dark like space.

Concentric circles of small particles that resemble ripples on a surface of water are near the center of the canvas, going out from a layer under it are streams of small particles undulating towards the upper and lower edge of the canvas. The background is divided into rectangular areas in bright yellow, red and light blue, resembling stacked cargo containers.

A random pairing that recently occurred in my feed:

"reŠerosvit " by @_nekropunk and "In The Round " by Reptile

"In The Round ", an abstract digital artwork. Small circles of varying sizes are arranged in a regular grid, their size differences and differences in colouration resulting in an image of dark parts where the background shines through near the center and of mostly grey near the edges where the circles are big enough to touch each other. The image is reminiscent of print.

The outputs of "Arrokoth" by @qotonana are dynamic and slightly confusing in a thought–provoking way.

Watching the swarm–like shifting and meandering of the displayed particles in live view has an unexpectedly organic vibe, despite the reference to astronomy in title and description.

A beautiful project!

"Fabricated" by Evan Greene feels physical and palpable (I love the way the materials are rendered), yet the virtual sculptures' compositions appear to be about to tip over any time or sometimes just couldn't exist that way.

A great exploration of what we expect our world to be like.

I really love how my two iterations of "immiscible" by Geoffrey Crayon contrast with each other, yet also show their common generative process.

I've been stuck trying to write some thoughtful comments on recent projects but just can't find the time to do so properly between family and work. But I realised how much I enjoy seeing other people post individual artworks with just a sentence or two to highlight what they like about it most.

Maybe that's how I can continue to share some of the art I enjoy. Snippets. Bits. Fragments. Fitting my attention span these days as well as the time I can spare to write something.

"Forma y orden" by Juan Rodríguez García takes a refreshing new approach to the exploration of order and chaos that seems to be an ubiquitous theme of .

The stylized images resemble a match between Andy Warhol's art and IKEA assembly instructions and make us translate abstract concepts into everyday life. Don't some of the outputs remind you of people waiting in your doctor's office or at the district office?

@clauswilke Thank you for the thoughts you put into this and for publishing it in such a compelling way!

I'd like to add that for me, something usually is art when either the creator says it is or when they use a medium to express an idea or a concept.

Otherwise, we wouldn't have performance art, and this is what makes it easy for me to see AI images as art when created with this intention.

boringold,
@boringold@genart.social avatar

@clauswilke You're the second person to invite me to Farcaster this week, so there probably is something to it… I will check it out, thank you!
