@notjustbikes Have you found something that works for you to help with post/reply visibility? I remember you complained about it being quiet here. Yours and similar stories kept me from setting up my own single user server. Here's @b0rk with details: https://social.jvns.ca/@b0rk/110876773134449667

@notjustbikes Or perhaps more likely you shifted towards other networks like Bluesky.

some notes on using a single-person Mastodon server https://jvns.ca/blog/2023/08/11/some-notes-on-mastodon

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk The other day I saw a report about some instance(s?) that block single-user instances as standard policy "for evading moderation". Gah! Of course I can't find it now, sorry. (What with search being non-existent..) Stuff like that but foremost the visibility issues make me hesitant to set up my own instance. Thanks for posting a good overview, I think, of advantages and disadvantages.

@b0rk Late entry but just came across this comment with low level info about starting a program on Debian: https://www.reddit.com/r/C_Programming/comments/15mjopz/does_libc_have_a_main_in_there_somewhere/jvgvjfe/

debian, to debian

We don't wish to ruin our own surprise anniversary party, but we'd like to share that we celebrate 30 years of Debian on August 17 of this year. Join us! Plenty of Cheese and Cake to be had. :) Organize your very own Debian Day! https://wiki.debian.org/DebianDay/2023

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@Linux_Is_Best You copy-pasted that from Wikipedia but somehow omitted what it says RIGHT THERE: "[...] Debian Project, which was established by Ian Murdock on August 16, 1993." Also on the effing link that was included in the post: "Debian Day is celebrated each year on August 16th."

So no, they are not a little early. In fact they are a day late, unless that was a typo @debian? I don't see any other references to Aug 17.

finally got around to putting my twitter archive on the internet at https://tweets.jvns.ca/

only has tweets up to october 2022 because that's when I exported an archive

here's the source: https://github.com/jvns/tweets-archive/.

it’s a mash up of @darius's https://tinysubversions.com/twitter-archive/make-your-own/ tool to get the data and https://nitter.net for the CSS

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@igb @rotopenguin @b0rk I downloaded my archive in November and for every t.co url in tweets.js there was an "expanded_url" key (or "media_url" for image tweets) with the full url.

what community spaces are you using on the internet these days to talk about programming?

(mastodon/twitter? tiktok? discord? stack overflow? mailing lists? hn/reddit? just private group chats? wikis? something else?)

I'm writing a talk and I'm trying to think about how we share information as a community

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk I go to https://www.reddit.com/r/adventofcode/ for chatter and https://www.reddit.com/r/C_Programming/ for ideas/questions/getting better. I really dislike platforms with downvotes, though, so I never stay long. Haven't found comparable venues elsewhere.

Aaand, now I can't even get t̶w̶i̶t̶t̶e̶r̶ X to load.

It's amazing how short a time span Elon Musk has turned Twitter from a 'losing money, but potentially profitable' platform to 'dumpster fire.'

It's like one of those pusher games at an arcade, where every action Musk has taken pushed off another set of users, but instead of the house winning by only pushing a coin or two at a time, he shoved the entire jackpot out of the machine.

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@geerlingguy If it doesn't load then this won't either, but here's a savage breakdown of just one aspect: https://twitter.com/espiers/status/1683439675195662337

@notjustbikes Nice. I had an MSX home computer in the 80s so I know it and the OPL series in general as MSX expansion options that I read about in computer magazines, but never got one. I was always more into (making) software than hardware.

You have a small amount of data. Let's say <= 1kb. It's on your smartphone. You need to hand it to a microcontroller. What is the cheapest/simplest way to get it there? No options off limits

(I've left some things vague on purpose)

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@gvy_dvpont If mcu has wifi: set up an upload script on a web server on a third device, download it from there.

I'm excited for the next major release of Mastodon (4.2) that's coming soon. Half a year of UX improvements (that of course mastodon.social users are already benefiting from). More details to follow.

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron Will it fix inaccessibility of alt text in the web interface on touch devices? Can't tap "ALT" because it will open the image. (This is probably not an accessibility issue, I mean for vision impaired people, because they won't use the interface this way. I am not impaired, I just want to see the alt text sometimes.)

So, I've decided to drop this giant non-enshittified Python course out there for your ongoing amusement. https://github.com/dabeaz-course/python-mastery.

It's the same course I took on a decade-long world tour of corporate training. Some people who took it went on to do dumb things like land rovers on other planets and stuff. Anyways, enjoy!

ednl, (edited )
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@dabeaz Fantastic, thanks. Not sure this is worth a pull request, but I noticed on slide 4 you write "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International (CC-SA 4.0) license" but at the bottom of every slide it says "CC BY-SA 4.0" with an added BY which I think is appropriate. You do ask to including the notice in derivations so I guess the BY is implied. Still, perhaps good to eliminate that ambiguity.

if you used to be bad at web design and now you’re pretty good, what helped you get better? I often feel like I’m not improving even though I make a fair number of websites

(asking about visual design/UX design here, NOT html/css/js)

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk I wouldn't say I'm good (because I'm not) but I got a lot of ideas from https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Principles-Design-William-Lidwell/dp/1592530079 Not a bible with hard & fast rules but certainly good for inspiration.

just tried out lima (a VM for running Linux on a Mac) and it's so much nicer to use than vagrant https://lima-vm.io/

to use it, I just had to run:

$ limactl start default
(optionally edit config file, but you don't have to)
$ lima

by default it mounts my home directory as read-only inside the VM and forwards ports, so I don't even need to configure directory mappings

(there's also a container runtime called colima built on top of lima, which I haven't tried)

ednl,
@ednl@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk So is it an actual VM or a container? They say both in the first sentence but it seems to me that "VM" is only a SEO keyword to lure us in :/

I have serious issues with YouTube comments: they are used to spread so much misinformation and lies.

For example, for my latest video, many people have said that I am lying about emergency vehicles being able to go through the knip. Even though I literally SHOW FOOTAGE of emergency vehicles going through the knip.

This is a common lie being told about the project online.
