Makes me happy when I post about a tool ( https://audon.space ), people talk about ways it it could be even more helpful for the blind community, and the dev ships those features pretty much immediately.

Thanks @nmkj ! 🙏

Based on the amount of spam signups on https://pixelfed.social, I wouldn't be surprised if spam accounts correlate to other platforms recent user influx as well.

I'm not saying all growth is spam, but they are significant enough on my :pixelfed: instance to be noticable.

Luckily, 90% of spam accounts on Pixelfed are caught and hidden before any user sees them thanks to our Autospam system.

fediversereport,
@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

@dansup Seems right to me. Mastodon.social trumps everything in the daily server signups on @mastodon_daily_active_users , but when I check from which server new followers for me come from, only a very small percentage is from m.s. Ofcourse new followers =/= new signups, and n=1 etc.

Has anyone made contact with the people behind ? I think many people would like to use it, but it has a few unlabelled buttons in the room UI.
I haven’t been able to find any way to contact them but this would be a big hit in the blind community if it were a bit more .

@douglawlor @JonathanMosen Hey, thanks for reaching out! Very good point about the accessibility features, and its great to hear that this might be helpful in the blind community.

The tool is made by someone in the Japanese fediverse community, which does not overlap well with the western fedi community. This is why this tool could exist for a few months with nobody here on western fedi knowing about it. I'll try and get in contact with the dev, but language might be a barrier

There are quite a few tools that help you find interesting accounts to follow. I wrote about how the space has evolved, and these tools have build upon each other. Here's an overview of some of them:

https://fedifollows.fedified.com/ by @DataDrivenMD A curated list with the accounts separated by ~20 topics. Allows 1-click follow, and prioritizes accounts by activity. A good option for new users that want to get started.

fediversereport,
@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

https://www.verifiedjournalist.org/ and https://www.lawstodon.org/ provide account discovery, as well as a form of verifications for users who register with the service. Allows for 1-click follows. Shows detailed account information as well as their recent posts, to get a good impression if this is an interesting account to follow. Has detailed search by topics and themes.

Recommended if you are looking for more specific accounts regarding journalism or the legal community.

@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

https://fedi.directory/ by @FediFollows has a large directory of interesting accounts, on a huge number of topics.

The directory is helpful if you are looking for more niche or specific content. Following the account is great for a more serendipitous type of discovery, getting you interesting accounts about surprising topics in your feed.

3/X

fediversereport,
@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

Another approach is to look at the accounts that you follow, and search for the people that they in turn follow. Both https://whomtofollow.com and https://followgraph.vercel.app/ provide a similar service for this.

You can then sort this resulting list in different ways, depending on what you are looking for. See attached screenshot to get an idea of how you can use this.

4/X

fediversereport,
@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

The directory on https://fediverse.info/explore/people allows everyone to sign up by adding hashtags to their profile, and using the tag to opt-in. Great to use if you are looking for a specific topic.

Creator @dansup is currently working on an upgrade: https://mastodon.social/@dansup/110265131182573880

https://truesciphi.org/ is a curated list dedicated to science, philosophy and mathematics. These are fairly large lists, and great if you want to find scientists in specific fields.

5/X

fediversereport,
@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

https://follows.spreadmastodon.org/ by @spreadmastodon has a curated list with a 1-click follow. This is specifically designed to streamline the process as much as possible and get new users up and running with interesting content in their feed.

Finally, https://findmyfriends.online/ is a way to find your Mastodon friends on PixelFed. It looks at your Mastodon follows, and tries to match those to PixelFed account. Great to get your PixelFed account started.

Which tools do you prefer?

Audon is a great real-time audio streaming service for the ! Think Spaces or Clubhouse, and you pretty much got it. You create a room for audio, where other people can listen to you, or just give them the role of speaker as well.

You can easily log in with your fediverse (Mastodon/Calckey/Pleroma) account, create a room, share the link, and you're ready to go!

Check it out at https://audon.space

Screenshot showing the room itself with my personal account as host and speaker, and this account as listener

fediversereport,
@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

Audon makes good use of the social graph of your fediverse account as well. You need to sign in to listen in on a room, and that means that there is a lot of different privacy settings available for the room. Like, you can have a room with only your followers, or only the people you follow. See the screenshot for all the available options.

I just spent 20 painful minutes trying to explain the Fediverse and Mastodon to our local community association president. She made it seem like I was trying to explain string theory to a gerbil.

Suffice to say, this isn't going to be easy.

fediversereport,
@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

@maria @shoq I think this gets easier once other non-microblogging projects on fediverse gets more mainstream. Its much harder for people to relate to an explanation that tells how there is different server software for microblogging. Its easier to show them how you use your twitter-equivalent to follow friends on an instagram-equivalent, and then seemlessly also use the same account to comment on a video stream that uses a twitch-like.

Hello Fediverse!

@Flipboard is currently a walled garden.

It's a beautiful, highly curated walled garden filled with content from the worlds best publishers and creators curated by Flipboard's editorial team as well as our community of magazine makers.

But it's still a walled garden. Today that begins to change.

We've moved four of our most popular desks into the Fediverse for you to enjoy.

@CultureDesk

The other three are @NewsDesk, @CultureDesk and @TechDesk.

With these desks we aim to make it easier to discover people and content in the Fediverse.

Our managing editor @csullivan wrote a blog post about our approach to curation on .

Wikipedia is now on Mastodon, at @wikipedia!

They've taken an interesting approach here, as it is an account run by the community, where everyone can contribute (explanation here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/@Wikipedia). At the same time, it is verified on the official homepage of wikipedia.org, as you can see in the screenshot.

Personally, I think this suits the spirit of the fediverse that the Wikipedia account is not a PR department, but community members building something together!

The developer (@tvler ) of the browser extension Streetpass (streetpass.social, check it out, its cool!) is looking for someone who has some activitypub experience to help and give some advice for setting up a lightweight federated server. Anyone who can help?

Automattic, the company behind WordPress is now the official author of the ActivityPub plugin. This is pretty big news, since it allows every WordPress website to be a potential fediverse server.

In this piece I take a look at the potential impact on #fediverse culture, zooming in on how tagging your WordPress posts makes them show up when you search for a specific hashtag here on the fediverse.

How do you think this will change the fediverse?

@fediversereport@mastodon.social avatar

StreetPass is a cool new browser extension that uses Mastodon's verification system in a clever way.

Mastodon users verify themselves by adding a custom link to their personal site. StreetPass lets you know when you've found one of these links, and adds them to your list. As you browse the web, StreetPass will build a list of Mastodon users that belong to the websites you visit.

I spoke with the creater @tvler about the project, 🧵 below.
