Considering setting up my own Mastodon instance but before I decide, I'd like to know what kind of bandwidth & disk space people's instances are using.

Sound off below - please boost for reach.

@techaddressed Thinking about the same, but using GoToSocial:

  • Just the server, no frontend (use whatever client you like)
  • Single binary in Go (updating is just "download/launch the new binary")
  • Support for SQLite (performant enough for single/few user instance, no separate db deployment, easy backup/restore)

A: "…"
I: "… und wie die Restore-Anforderungen aussehen?"
A: "…"

(Wieso "DevOps" in Unternehmen scheitert, Teil 47482.)

I feel so soap-boxy lately, maybe because I’m teaching a class, but here’s another kernel of truth I’ll throw at y’all about communities:

If you are trying to get new people,especially diverse people and young people into your hobby, and your first reaction is to show off your really expensive kit and say how much it cost, you are gatekeeping mega mode, even if you’re just trying to share your interest. Nobody wants to hear there is a $1500 (or $5000) barrier to entry to their new hobby. It’s demoralizing, not educational, and they’re just gonna leave.

Happens in bicycles, drones, photography, astronomy, gaming, marksmanship… you name it, there’s a rich older white dude ready to show off his six grand investment in a hobby to a college student with a three digit bank account.

@hacks4pancakes This text should show up every time someone uploads a video to YouTube. I'm so sick and tired of all those "Make X at home easily" videos, when someone just walks into their big workshop or garage stuffed with tools and equipment worth at least $20,000.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) remains a remarkable film.

Ever time I watch it I forget how short it actually is, just 1h22m. With it's fairly dense plot and a lot of stuff going on it still takes the time to be calm and deliberate, to linger on a single visual and some music, and even an extended audio-visual vibe intermission.

It does so much with so little.

Wide shot of an old victorian-style hall. there's a car wreck and a six-legged walker tank on the ground level. the back wall has a large relief of a phylogenetic tree, pale light shines from above. a figure sits hunched on top of the tank

frederic,
@frederic@chaos.social avatar

@esther Still one of my all-time favorites and the first anime movie I ever saw (fittingly: at a demoscene party). Had to re-watch it a couple of times to really grasp it, because there is so much to unpack and so many iconic little details.

@sarajw Hmm. At a window width of 1920px and below, the headline covers the content in the basic layout (tested on macOS in both Chrome and Firefox). 🤔

frederic,
@frederic@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw It's always the case, not just on hover. And it's only on that page.

"white-space: nowrap;" helps, but then there is some padding somewhere causing a horizontal scroll bar. 🤷‍♂️

frederic,
@frederic@chaos.social avatar

@sarajw Ah, found it! I have reduced motion enabled on macOS. When I disable it, the headline looks correct (but will expand and break on hover).

Getting to be friends (and collaborators) with super talented makers has some nice bonus benefits! In addition to the gorgeous Fibonacci heart pendant, @jasoncoon sent me a flexible PCB he designed and assembled (!) that has 128 tiny addressable LEDs laid out in a Fibonacci pattern, along with the vector file to cut out a faux leather cover. The whole assembly looks truly stunning in cuff bracelet form.

    A hand showing off different angles of an LED cuff bracelet with a faux leather cover stitched around the edges. The bracelet contains 128 tiny square perforations where 128 RGB LEDs shine through, arranged in a Fibonacci spiral pattern. The LEDs are displaying a rainbow colored animation patterns.

    @geekmomprojects @jasoncoon That would be an awesome dice box for pen & paper roleplay. Would be cool if the lights were animated when shaken.
