Oh just... fuck it all and everything to hell.

Despite being cautious... Teen has tested positive for covid. Which means no surgery for them on Saturday (I can't imagine the doctor would okay surgery on someone who is positive with a virus, I would absolutely say I am not okay with that).

Now the scramble begins of what is the safest course of action forward.

I just... I tried to play like I was okay with it (the trip), but I knew this was gonna happen.

Aww man, I'm bummed.

Last month I ordered an expanding sewing gauge from WAWAK during a sale. Got the box of stuff (I splurged a lil) and set it aside as I wasn't sewing right away.

Opened it up, and the sewing gauge is MIA. The sleeve is here, as is the paper insert, but the expanding gauge is gone. It was in a plastic envelop with several other things, so it definitely didn't just fall out into the box. It must have fallen out during packaging :(

Sent an email but not hopeful.

So, my kid is away for a few days with some friends. They planned a covid cautious trip, driving there and getting an Airbnb.

The host cancelled on them a few hours before they were to check in. They are having a meltdown (don't blame them).

My grandmother (who is generally not well) has covid.

If you need me I'll be in the blanket cocoon, in the fetal position, crying.

How far afield do you let yourself stray when exploring new techniques/media/etc?

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@artcollisions I’m mostly a knitter, but I’ll do any kind of textile art at least once, both because I sometimes like picking up new ones, and also because some things transfer from one textile technique to another.

But I’ve also enjoyed doing a little pottery and sketching now and then, and am working on some beginning basketry (though that’s not far from textiles). I can do simple carpentry, too.

It’s all making things. Textile techniques are just easier to pick up the more I know.

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@jonobie @artcollisions people are very good at not noticing the component parts of compound words. If it’s any consolation, the moment I realized a cupboard was originally a board to put cups on made me feel a little abashed.

What happens if iCloud Drive stops syncing? I offer a cascading set of options to try to get the pump running again in https://tidbits.com/2023/10/12/cloudy-with-a-chance-of-insanity-unsticking-icloud-drive/ It starts and concludes with my five-month battle to get one of my Macs fully synced. The secret solution? Sticking with Apple Support, which ultimately got enough information to engineering to fix it! Dang.

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@glennf at some point I found a tip in the apple support forums (or whatever they’re called) to create a new empty folder in the top level of iCloud on the device that isn’t syncing. So far this kludge has worked for me every time I’ve had a problem with iCloud syncing (not on the scale of yours, admittedly), but I’m bookmarking your article for this method’s probable inevitable failure.

I hope your perseverance helps them fix it properly!

Twitter: geek joy, fail whales, new voices, communities forming, breaking news … & doxxing, bigot brigades, fake news networks, gaslighting pols + celebs, the fash…

Last yr I posted a farewell & deleted the app. But was that enough? “X” [#twitter] keeps setting new lows of scary awfulness.

Poll: What did you do to (or are you doing with) your account?

If you’re willing, share why. (And plz, everyone be kind, no need to shame other ppl’s choices here. We each live our own lives.)

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@LLS deleted everything because I didn’t know what would happen over there, I didn’t want to touch Twitter again, and I didn’t like just leaving my account unattended. I know some people argued against it because of the risk of someone using the same account name for impersonation, but i don’t feel that I’m notable enough for that to be a risk.

Okay weird question, but I've never knit with acrylic before except like a very tiny bit at the beginning of my knitting journey before I knew about blocking.

CAN you ever block acrylic? How does that work? The fibers are synthetic, so they don't do the relaxy thing that natural fibers do...

(I could google but would prefer real ppl help not AI, lolsob)

@knitting

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch I’ve boosted because I know I’ve got followers who have steam-blocked acrylic successfully and I’ve only read about it. I have a bookmarked article with clear instructions; let me know if you want it.

It’s different from blocking wool, unsurprisingly.

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch

Here’s the quick photo tutorial from 2012; it’s got links to more in-depth instructions. (That still work; I just checked.) The nice thing about steam-blocking acrylic is that unlike blocking natural fibers, it’s permanent.

I feel like people forget you can cook fruit. Craving apple pie but don't want to go all out?

Lightly seer some peach slices in a little butter. Serve with your oatmeal. So fancy and yummy.

Is your curry boring? Do the same thing!

Put a little cooked fruit on it for a good time.

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@futurebird yes! So good. Also, core an apple, put dried fruit and spices (and optionally, brown sugar) where the core was, and bake it. Not as much fuss as apple pie, but a similar satisfaction.

Had to send a difficult email, just now.

I have to back out of the Noe Valley Art Festival, because there is a Covid case in my home. I'm still testing negative, but I can't really take the chance that I could infect anyone else.

I hope that there is another artist who can step in and take my place.

My heart is broken. I was really looking forward to this festival, and have been working on so many new drawings.

Oh well.

This is the shawl that never ends…

I am never knitting another garter stitch shawl in laceweight yarn, no matter how nice the yarn. (It turns out that I’m only mostly a process knitter.)
I probably won’t finish it this month, but I’ve at least been working on it more, which is sufficient for my purposes.

Next time I have yarn like this, I’ll weave it instead.

I know I’ve seen people here lamenting that companies try to ship orders as fast as possible, and I just saw a counter example that’s a good start:

I ordered multiple things from Target (in the US), and they gave me an option to wait longer in exchange for having things come in fewer boxes. They even gave me a tiny discount.

On the surface this seems like a good thing, though I suppose there might be some negative consequences I haven’t thought of. (More difficult for the packers, maybe?)

I've been seeing a lot of ads for a children's clothing company called CCMOM. The ads show bright clothes adorned with beautiful appliqué designs and amazing details. All under $30, but something felt off about the items.

After digging around CCMOM's site, I found that the vast majority of their product photos are AI generated.

If the featured products are AI generated, then this must be a scam, right?

Yes. But not in the way you might expect.

A listing on CCMOM that shows a sunflowers appliqué jacket. It is mostly yellow and features several large sunflower petals on it. It looks very well made and realistic. The price on the site is $24.99
A beautiful children's dress that has appliqué flowers and plants at the bottom, then a grassy field, then the top part is the sky themed with clouds and buildings. It looks real, but extremely ornate. The price on the site is $21.99.

gannet,
@gannet@wandering.shop avatar

@jenni @docpop there’s a ton of sites like that. For a while they were stealing the example photos from knitting patterns being sold to hand knitters. It was really weird seeing ads showing people or patterns that I knew from social media!

I don't understand how lace is made, but looking at the and pins and patterns ... listen buddy I know math when I see it. This is A Thing. Obviously.

Right away I want to know: Can I encode information in lace?

How much of an expert must one be to make your own patterns?

What about the creation of surfaces?

is more accessible, and people have been exploring math with knitting forever.

But what possibilities does lace offer?

What is the theory of lace?

tatted lace spheres, the threads are starched, these delicate baubles have been used as Christmas ornaments.
More lace ribbons, a simple pattern that contains periodic distortions to the regular grid.
An excerpt from Mathematics Magazine Vol. 91, No. 4 (October 2018), pp. 307-309 Shows I'm hardly the first person to muse about this. Need to get my hands on the rest of this article, obviously. Q: When did it first occur to you that there might be some interesting math behind the lace-making process? VI: It really started when I discovered bobbin lace in my mid-20s. Bobbin lace is complicated, but very logical. It is kind of like doing a Sudoku puzzle. Here, the puzzle is to figure out what threads to braid together and in what order, to find a successful path through the pattern. Q: What does success mean in this context? Does it mean producing a piece that’s aesthetically pleasing or something else? VI: Unlike a pattern for knitting or crochet, a bobbin lace pattern is not expressed as a linear sequence of written steps. A bobbin lace pattern is typically a diagram. There are many possible ways different threads can come together and most of those are not successful, meaning you could end up with too many threads in one area and not Math. @futurebird I encode words in knitted lace, and have done a bit of regular bobbin lace. I’m sure it must be possible; all fiber arts are math at heart.

I find it sadly amusing that I made vague plans for the in hopes of not thwarting myself, and I’m mostly not working on those plans. I might have blocked my ability to work on those projects by saying I would.

I have been doing occasional knitting on the garter stitch shawl, but because the yarn is somewhere in the laceweight to light fingering weight range, it’s going to take approximately forever.

If you view Memories in Photos on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you might want to navigate to an individual photo. Apple makes it possible, though not precisely easy. kristinHenry, to art
@kristinHenry@vis.social avatar

Over the years, I've played with code and particle systems to create art. In the systems I develop, each particle has an atomic number and interacts with other particles based on their atomic numbers. In various ways, they 'draw' when they collide.

In this piece, I'm combining one of these particle systems with the Fibonacci system.

The end result? Looks a bit like a quilt, I think.
