No point in doing a "Last Four Watched" as I only logged one flick, a rewatch of this one:

https://letterboxd.com/film/the-worlds-greatest-sinner/

If you're familiar with this at all you know that it's very much not for everyone, but this is a breathtakingly weird must see for anyone who loves outsider art or underground filmmaking.

Some have argued for this being a go-for-broke surrealist film, but my personal take is that (as with many low-budget films of this era) the surrealism is largely unintentional

For the music nerds in the house: I would be remiss if I did not point out that "World's Greatest Sinner" has an early soundtrack by Frank Zappa. He said this was the world's worst movie, but was willing to put his name on his work (unlike Edgar G. Ulmer who worked on the cinematography under a pseudonym).

In the still from the original post here, the band in the background is the Johnny Otis show (name can be seen on the drum set).

How was my weekend? I went to an alt country show with an old friend, a very Trumpy dude.

I saw a lot. lol

Interesting crowd. The headliner, Race Ricketts, opened with the lyric, "Imma pacifist.... pass a fist right through your jaw." Crowd was whooping and hollering. Gotta admit, it's a good line. I'm still humming it in my head lol

A 'drop to his knee, ring on her finger' engagement happened right next to me, at the front of the stage, during the song Honky Tonk Hell.

An hour earlier, the prospective groom started talking to me on the patio at Dan's because I had a Cubs hat on.
"Holy shit! Are you a Cubs fan?"
"No"
"Are you a baseball fan?"
"No, it's just a hat that fits"
"Well, I'm from Illinois, but don't tell anyone I'm really a Cardinals fan."
"Ah, my dad's family is from St Louis"
"You seem like a pretty cool guy. Can I give you my mom's phone number? She gives the best blowjobs in the history of the world"
"Uh, thanks, but I'm good on that right now"

I took their engagement photo on the patio after the show. Early 20s probably. Dude-o asked if I had a dollar, rolled it up and they kissed, with the rolled dollar stuck up both their noses. I didn't ask for my dollar back. Then he asked me if I wanted a bump. Still good, dude-o

So sits in with band playing "Rockin' in the Free World." Uh, yeah, that's great, but the song title belies the song's true meaning. Sort of like "Born in the USA," isn't a full-throated endorsement of American militarism.

This may not be as bad as using it in campaigns.

@cs True, those are both misunderstood/misused the same way pretty frequently (and usually by the same type of person).

One of the funniest ones to me was the Trump rallies where they were playing "YMCA" and people were doing the YMCA letter dance thing. Like...are you guys actually familiar at all with the Village people?

New from Special Investigative Correspondent @stevanzetti: A new coalition of Christian nationalist groups is mobilizing congregations to take over school boards. https://www.texasobserver.org/christian-schoolboards-education-k12/

@jetsilver@ohai.social avatar

@TexasObserver @stevanzetti I'm really, really glad this is getting more attention, it's long overdue. We beat their candidates back in the most recent elections here in Denton County but they did manage to slip one in in the last election when fewer people were paying attention (fortunately she is outnumbered and gets no traction).

Voters who actively support these folks are actually a minority here but they're a motivated one, and they take advantage of poor turnout in local elections.

If you live in TX and you're not aware of H5N1 (Avian Flu), you really need to get it on your radar ASAP.

Due to various political/social factors in this state that I won't need to explain to anyone who lives here, it is quite likely that in the event this goes human to human this state will become an epicenter.

Also, anyone anywhere feeding their pets a raw diet, REALLY think about shifting that. This virus is transmitted through raw meat/dairy.

Article from the Dallas Morning News about the Keller ISD's cancellation of a high school production of "The Laramie Project".

Noting also for the record, the far right Patriot Mobile-backed board members who likely pushed for this were also recently responsible for sneaking an evangelical documentary film crew into a high school, to the outrage of many parents.

In your opinion, did Fritz Lang ever make what you would consider a bad movie?

If so, why?

@KentuckyConjurer Boosted because this is a great question. Offhand I can't think of any I've seen that I'd say that about (even ones he himself didn't like much).

We had a preacher submit an application to vend at our witches' market.

We were going over apps last night and he stated he did "Physical Impartations", which anyone raised on the Bible knows that was Apostle Paul's version of sharing blessings....and casting out demons through the laying of hands.

So being in the Bible Belt, we are gearing up for protests on the day of the event, just in case.

If you had to put up wards over a venue for an event like this, what would you suggest? We don't mind the protesters so long as they stay across the street (free advertising). But to protect the space, what would you do?

jetsilver,
@jetsilver@ohai.social avatar

@KentuckyConjurer I've been thinking a lot about this post. This type of thing is becoming a pretty real threat here in the Bible Belt. I don't know that I have any good answers but knowing the guy's identity in advance obviously gives you some advantages. I'll be following this story and am very interested in hearing about what you decide to do (if you want to share that).

@KentuckyConjurer Unitarian churches have been experiencing problems for awhile now, too and it appears to be escalating. Our local witch store has not experienced vandalism to my knowledge but I know they get harassed online.
