@jevidl@ono-sendai.jevidl.net

Dad, network guy, trying to be a good human. By day I make computers talk to each other as a networking person, and in the evenings I tend to not put computers down either by poking at home infrastructure or video games.

When I do get away from the screens I do ham radio and I’m trying to do more hiking and camping. I want to start canoeing and fishing with my sons.

I speak for myself; not another group, my employer, or any association.

Have you ever wondered what an anime that was the fever-dream love child of Ghost in the Shell and Blade Runner might look like? Especially if it was made at the height of the cyberpunk swell in the mid-90s? And what if it had Big Trans Themes, both transfem and transmasc?

Armitage III is that anime.

And it's available to stream for free from the internet archive.

@Impossible_PhD I haven’t watched this in a very long time. And when I did, any trans themes would have bounced right off my forehead. I should watch it again.

The "Cheat Sheet" is a new feature on all our First Looks at CoffeeGeek, and one of the things we do with that prominent space is promote independent, third party reviews of the products. This is done without any prior knowledge of these websites (ie, no collusion).

We do it because we want you to read, support and share the hard work other indie-website owners are doing to write about good coffee and espresso.

This weekend’s 3d printing lesson - Don’t assume that filament is dry straight out of the package. Even the vacuum sealed one with the silica pack.

I popped open two fresh spools, and both were relatively wet. The second one took the humidity in the dryer up to 67% at 50 C. So, lesson learned… I will be drying filament as a matter of course before using. h/t to @ke8smq

Me, on hold with Vanguard.

Agent: "Hello Kenneth, looking at this transaction, since it involves a trust, I'm sorry but I'm going to transfer you to one of our senior agents who specializes in trusts since it's more complicated than I'm comfortable with"

What a surreal experience to have someone on the support phone just be honest, say the quiet part out loud, and send me directly to someone qualified. This is why I love Vanguard.

In the J6 DOJ trial (the big one) yesterday was Trump's deadline for filing pretrial motions.

(See attached minute order)

No surprise, his lawyers filed a bunch of motions just before the deadline.

Here's the thing about defense motions in criminal proceedings: Defendants are given lots of leeway to file motions that don't have a chance. The lawyers run into trouble only if they lie or misrepresent facts.

This is because of how much is at stake in criminal cases.

@Teri_Kanefield Thank you for not saving time, these write ups are very helpful to me as a non-lawyer to understand what's happening! I also very much appreciate your level-headed approach - it helps me stay appraised of where this thing is going without losing my mind sorting through all the news articles and other things. I can focus on what was said in court, with some context on what it means. 🙂

I bought winter tires for the first time (I know I know, I should have gotten them before, but I'm a dumb warm-weather transplant to this frozen place). I think now my tires are worth more than the rest of my 400k-km car, ouch.

I'm grateful to be able to afford winter tires, but man it would sure be nice if I didn't have to be 100% reliant on having a car that can make it across Antarctica to campus. Big downside of living on a farm and working in a city. (Upside: baby goats.)

3D printing has come a long way.

This is one of the objects that JLCPCB's 3D printing service has created showing off their ability to do full colour printing using HP's Multi Jet Fusion printers:

@ve7fim HP…. Do they require signed filament reels and stop printing when you’re out of black, even though you’d be perfectly happy with this prototype piece in cyan? :-)

@MLE_online@social.afront.org avatar

Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings have always registered as nice but just OK to me. However, when you think about when some of them were built -- in the 1890s -- you realize that the design cues that look normal to modern eyes must have been revelatory in their time.

jevidl,
@jevidl@ono-sendai.jevidl.net avatar

@MLE_online I think some of the staying power is because they are timeless. By using the natural world for so much inspiration, and incorporating it into designs, well, nature hasn’t gone out of style yet.

I think the other part is that the newer breakthroughs are less visual and more around construction. Billionaires don’t compete with amazing skyscrapers, and residential homes are to me, uninspired. The interesting comes from things like passive home tech, etc, to me.

jevidl,
@jevidl@ono-sendai.jevidl.net avatar

@MLE_online I think for me, working in the natural world will create timelessness. It’s certainly not for some people, but generally I think a lot of people will feel a connection to the natural elements. Same as if they slowed down on a hike. (Or maybe I’m projecting too much of my human experience).

His designs - long lines, parallel lines, and geometric designs are all, imo, simple and elegant. They don’t rely on trendy colors & materials (cottage-core ship-lath, anyone?)

jevidl,
@jevidl@ono-sendai.jevidl.net avatar

@MLE_online I’m not up on the arts and crafts stuff as much, but I don’t think it’s necessarily organic. He used naturally materials like stone, wood, water, and natural light. So no curving lines, per say, but natural materials expressed in a way that seems to connect with people.

Architecture was also coming down from the ornate excess of the victorian or gothic styles, and he seemed to find a balance point - intricacy and designs without “flair”.
