I should stop by B&N since Im in the area. Not that I need anything, but I miss bookstores, even chains. I havent found any independent bookstores in DE or even good coffee places.

Is DE Delaware, by chance? Because I have some suggestions if so.

Nadia Nadim is a force to be reckoned with on the pitch. She’s feared by defenders worldwide. But there’s more. She’s also a doctor AND speaks 11 languages.

Moreover, her journey is filled with adversity.

She was born in Afghanistan. At age 9 her father was executed by the Taliban. 2 years later her family fled to Denmark. Imagine overcoming this to reach her heights. 🔥💪🏻

This thought-provoking post by Alon Mizrahi (https://nitter.privacydev.net/alon_mizrahi/status/1753897051744583999) about how, completely unlike Russia, for instance, Israel seems keen to make sure that its atrocities are out in the open for all to see, interprets it from the inside, Jewish, perspective.

But it also reminded me of something in relation to its outside – non-Jewish - supporters. Right at the start of the (first) Trump term, many people, including myself, were puzzled at first that he would lie about things that were plain obviously untrue and trivially refutable by anyone with eyesight, like the infamous crowd size claim. The explanation is and was that this is actually a well-established technique used by cults: by demanding belief in outrageous lies, those who stay are more strongly committed, and the more outrageous the lie, the stronger the bond.

Something similar is going in here with respect to Israel. When you reach the point where Israel supporters are forced to literally defend the targeted murder of children for sport and boasting about it, for those who do there's simply no coming back from that, ever. Israel isn't even trying to help its defenders' ability to deny the atrocities, by actively flaunting the brutality and cruelty it's forcing them to justify them, and sell their soul for good, no returns.

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@bifouba Any justification of these atrocities from a 'Jewish' perspective is what I would call a hillul hashem, a desecration of the name of God, whether one believes in God or not. It's so totally anathema to the traditions of Judaism, beginning with Abraham's plea for Sodom "Will you sweep away the innocent with the guilty? Shall not the God of Justice deal justly?" Sickening to see anyone doing in the name of my religion and ethnicity, and you're right, there's no coming back from that for them.

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@bifouba Right, yes, you were clear on that and I also went to the original post to check it out. I also read you as saying that this move from Israel encourages some Jews to defend their behavior from a Jewish perspective (which I have witnessed), and so I wanted to decry that in the strongest possible terms.

  1. Raining, but dry, warm & cozy inside. Last day of rain for 10 days.
  2. Very weird chicken stew-ish concoction simmering in the crockpot (YouTube recipe) that I hope will be at least edible, if not delicious.
  3. On a hunch, I checked three episodes of PBS’ “Annika”and found that yes, I had indeed slept through them. Goody…three to watch now. 😂

Why are over-the-counter allergy medications so expensive???!!!!

The last time I took something like high dose Allegra every day it was prescription and so covered by my insurance.

I am now dealing with a situation where I was told to take 24-hour allergy pills twice a day, and have taken to haunting our local Grocery Outlet to see if they have the extra-cheap generics. I am privileged in that I can technically afford to buy them at the pharmacy but Jesus H. Christ.

If lack of feminism correlates to higher birth rates, why is it that nations which have high gender inequality also have some of the world’s lowest birth rates?

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@atomicpoet As I understand it, birth rates correlate more closely with wealth than gender equality

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@atomicpoet Oh sorry to be unclear, I meant wealth of the country. Kuwait is in the top 40 of nations in GDP per capita and Denmark is in the top 10, so we'd expect them to have lower birthrates.

trying a thing: i'll match up to $300 to UNRWA USA, which provides aid to Gaza and was just defunded by Joe Biden. It's tax deductible. Reply or DM me with your donation receipt to be matched. will close when this hits 300 or at 11:59pm monday pacific time whichever comes first https://www.unrwausa.org/

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@scott Genuine question as someone who has donated to UNRWA in the past: what do you make of the information that has come to light? A few (very) bad apples? Interested in your take. Because it certainly gave me pause. Sorry if you answered this in a previous post.

jewishreader,
@jewishreader@sfba.social avatar

@raphaelmorgan I completely understand why, not knowing me or my moral commitments, you might assume I was asking this question in bad faith. I hope it will become clear this is not the case. I wanted to know what Scott thought because I respect his opinion. I figured, correctly, that he would provide me with a good answer that mirrored those I was seeing from others I trust. And in response to your own questions: yes, we should not be supporting the Israeli government, something that I have advocated about to my representatives. And likewise there are many corporations I don't patronize based on their policies. Based on what I'm seeing right now, the Biden administration should not have defunded UNRWA. There is a lot of pressure on them to show to that they are fighting antisemitism, and this was an easy target that has apparently been on the radar of many right-wing Jews for a long time.

@DemocracySpot It is a truly terrible (both ideologically and cinematically) movie that arrived a time when few people recognized the myriad ways it was terrible. My parents were actually some of the few who did, but I was too young at the time to appreciate their points.
