I have been working with Web technologies since 1992. I have co-founded two browser companies, Opera Software and Vivaldi Technologies. I was CEO at Opera and I am CEO at Vivaldi.

I am a strong proponent of open standards. I believe in building feature rich products that can be adapted to the needs of users without collecting information about usage. I believe no company has the right to profile their users.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

So what does it mean for a browser to have AI built in? Does it mean that it is using your browsing data? Is it using it for ads or for profiling?

Is AI just another reason to collect your data? What are the so-called AI browsers doing today?

Would you use a browser that has AI built in?

I have provided three choices. The first one is that you want AI and do not care if the data is used for ads and profiling. Two : you do not want AI at all. Three: Want AI, but only if the data is not used for other purposes, such as ads and profiling.

I hope you will not give up on the Internet. We need to keep fighting for it.

I also hope you will choose @Vivaldi as your browser.

So what would it look like if Apple made a guitar pedal?😀

Based on what the DOJ have to say and how Apple normally does things, it might be something like this?

  1. Apple pedal only works with Apple guitar.
  2. It will not work in a rack with competitor HW and SW from Roland, Yamaha or Fender.
  3. Will only integrate well into Garageband.
  4. Will require Bluetooth connection with an iPhone and iWatch to work.

Am I right?🙃

Apple makes some great stuff, but when it comes to playing well with competitors, they did not get the memo.

At @Vivaldi we focus on the browser, but we also provide a few free services. What parts of Vivaldi are you using?

If you have not tried Vivaldi yet, a download at Vivaldi.com will get you started

I plan to. Never have before and this time I am lucky to be in the right spot at the right time.

Is it really a good idea to let the user control the browser's memory usage?
I doubt it. 🤔
What do you think?

@HalleAndert @Vivaldi @ruario

It is a good idea to use the defaults in this case, I agree with that. On the other hand I always believe in choice, so I will not fault them from adding that.

The browser is the most important tool for most people, so for me the idea that people want to control it more is reasonable and in tune with our thinking at Vivaldi.

My first EV was a VW e-Golf. Got it in 2019. Now we have three EVs in the family. I got the Polestar 2, the first car to have @Vivaldi available. We also have an Audi e-Tron.

Most of the time we charge at home. It is easiest and most of the time we do not drive far enough to have to charge somewhere else. When we do, there are fast chargers.

The cost of charging is a lot less than using gasoline.

The range of these cars is not as large as many of the newer models, but it does not matter, most of the time.

If you have never tried an EV, maybe next time you should give it a try. IMHO it is a much better experience.

@louiskhor @Vivaldi

Yes, started with a slow charger as well, but now I have 3 Level 2 chargers. It means all 3 cars can be charged at the same time. They are normally fully charged in less than 5 hours, even when depleted.

Yes, I think the difference is huge. No gear shifting and less noise. Not that I cannot enjoy a manual shift car every now and then, but the overall experience is just a lot better.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@EcoLogicExplorer @Vivaldi

The calculation is different when you have to use public chargers, although I would think in most cases they would still be less expensive than gasoline.

If you can charge at home, it really is a clear benefit. If you can generate power yourself, even more so.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@MIfoodie @Vivaldi

In Norway, where EVs are used more than in any other place, most gas stations have got or are getting chargers. What that means is that you stop, like before, to charge up your car. You grab a coffee or a small bite. A few minutes later you are ready to go again, if the charger is fast, which it mostly is.

In my case, when I take longer drives in my Polestar, 10 to 20 minutes charges are typical. Enough to grab a coffee.

@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

Congress in the US has banned Copilot for security reasons. I would take it further. Really the way Windows is coded now, it is a significant security problem. The idea that it is unclear whether you are using local data or online data is unacceptable.

This includes:

  • Login. Login should be local. You are not logging into a service. You are logging into a computer. The service should be separate from the computer.

  • Copilot. Clearly another case where you may not realize that you are sharing data by asking a question.

  • OneDrive. Another case where local data is backed up in the cloud, without active actions by you as a user. Backup is great, but you should have to explicitly enable it and there should be a warning that your data may be scanned.

  • Windows. In reality even Windows is now a problem given the login issue and any tracking that is happening.

Online cloud services can be great, but one should never be forced into online services or lured into them. Any computer should work fine without having to use OS online services, except basic services, like updates and the like.

Every family member I have uses Chrome on their mobile because “Google” and pretty much every family member has over 100 tabs open at any one time.

And that’s not because they want 99+ tabs open. It’s because they simply don’t close them / practice tab management.

Like, it’s a little frustrating that they all use Chrome, but even more frustrating that Chrome doesn’t have the option to “Close tabs after {days}” option.

😩

Indeed. Not sure what kind of tabs you want, but always good to know. We continue to add options. Some of the automatic close options we have are also not there on iOS yet.

There is a lot of reasons to love Mastodon and the Fediverse. One of them is the lack of algorithmic content. It does take a bit longer to get going and build up content providers, but not having a feed full of crap is all worth it!

It is time to invite more of your friends to join us. Invite to your current server or you can invite them to Vivaldi Social! Help them get going. They will thank you!

Indeed, except that Mastodon is a nonprofit and anyone can take the Mastodon code and set up a server. Which is what Truth Social did.

You have to wonder why Apple is so afraid of a full browser choice and allowing browser makers to run on their own codebase on iOS.

Could it be that they worry that other browsers might be better?

Some are comparing Safari to Internet Explorer and the comparison may be apt at this time.

If you have the time, read the text below and watch the videos. They tell a story.

@vivaldi Sadly as much as my move from the desktop version of to have been a resounding success, the same cannot be said for Vivaldi mobile.
Sync works really well but unfortunately it renders a lot of pages innacurately in both mobile and desktop modes. I'm on the latest Samsung flip, running the latest update. It's unusable for a lot of sites which means I'll have to find a different daily driver on mobile.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@mike

Glad you like @Vivaldi on the desktop.

Sorry to hear about your problems on mobile. That is a surprise. Vivaldi is using Chromium and the Samsung Flip is a popular phone. My best guess is that you are running into issues relating to the tracker or ad blocker, although that really should not impact a lot of sites.
