I have been working with Web technologies since 1992. I have co-founded two browser companies, Opera Software and Vivaldi Technologies. I was CEO at Opera and I am CEO at Vivaldi.

I am a strong proponent of open standards. I believe in building feature rich products that can be adapted to the needs of users without collecting information about usage. I believe no company has the right to profile their users.

The Norwegian government wants to ban Crypto mining. I hope they do and that others follow. It is time for this nonsense to stop.

Norway is part of the problem as well, but I welcome when good decisions are made.

Norway took the lead on electric cars. 90% of new cars sold are now electric. IMHO that lead has helped others take the steps needed.

Banning Crypto mining is another such step. There is a lot of wasted energy going into Crypto. Hopefully others will follow in Norway's footsteps here as well.

@Rathmox

"Banning crypto mining indirectly means banning crypto as mining is what allows the network to run and be secure. So having no node in one country will make transactions slow and expensive.
If mining is banned everywhere, crypto is indirectly banned too."

You said it so nicely. The nice side effect of banning Crypto mining would hopefully be the total banning of Crypto.

Crypto has done enough damage to the world. It is not just the waste of energy. The scamming side is equally important.

Do people want AI in their browsers?

If the survey I did on Mastodon is anything to go by, most people do not.

2% Want AI in their browser.
25% Want AI in their browser, if their data is not used for other purposes, such as ads and profiling.
73% Do not want AI in their browser at all.

575 entered the poll.

A lot of browser companies are now pushing AI in their browsers.

I guess the 2% have a lot of browsers to choose between.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@chepycou

That is true and there will be more Vivaldi users as well, so that will impact the numbers as well.

That being said, it confirms what we have been seeing. Users have not been asking for us to add AI. Rather the opposite.

2% is also a very, very low number. Given the cost of AI today, done in the cloud, I do not see it being offered free with no strings attached.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@fbajak

That may well be true. I do think there are a lot of smart people on Mastodon. 😀

It did not get totally dark. It was more like dusk. For roughly 3 minutes. If you look closely at the sun in the picture, it has a small dark core.

Partial solar eclipse can be cool as well, but it cannot really compete with the total one. Still worth sharing.

People often tell me that there is a lot of browsers out there. In some ways it is true, but how many of those browsers are:

  1. Not made by an OS company?
  2. Not made by a search company?
  3. Not made by an ad company?
  4. Available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.
  5. Has encrypted sync feature.

Can you name even 5?

That would give you the truly independent browsers.

I had a survey where I asked users on Mastodon which Vivaldi products and services they are using. This is the result:

83% Vivaldi on Windows, Mac & Linux.
65% Vivaldi on mobile
56% Vivaldi sync
39% Vivaldi Social (Mastodon)
13% Vivaldi Forums
9% Vivaldi Blogs
1% Vivaldi Automotive

11% used none of the Vivaldi products and services.

724 responded.

It is great to see how many are using Vivaldi across devices and sync. Vivaldi is one of the few browsers that offers browsers on all major OS and the only browser to do that and provide the browser in cars as well.

It is also great to see how many are using the different Vivaldi services. We are happy to provide ways for our community to engage and to support the Fediverse!

If you wonder what Vivaldi is, the best way to figure that out is to download it from vivaldi.com.

That was not part of the survey, but you are right that our Linux user base is big. In fact we have more Linux users than Mac users at this time.

Yes, most have not found Vivaldi yet, but more are finding us each day. I hope you contribute to that!

jon,

@LarsFosdal @Vivaldi

Been a while then. You would expect Vivaldi to be a bit like Opera in the past. We are former Opera people and when Opera went in a different direction, we were there to fill the gap.

We have done a lot of work, though, to make Vivaldi unique and if the last version you tried was 1.0, a lot has changed. 😀

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@LarsFosdal @Vivaldi

If you have been trying out Opera 13 and higher, that is when Opera went in, IMHO, the wrong direction.

In any case I hope you will give us a try. Worst case you actually might like us! 😀

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@LarsFosdal @Vivaldi

Most all the browsers use the same engine, Chromium. IMHO it is the feature set that to a greater degree sets browsers apart today.

Not sure what is important to you, but to me it is things like tab handling, keyboard shortcuts, mouse gestures, page capture and overall flexibility.

I also use the mail client, calendar and news reader in Vivaldi.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@LarsFosdal @Vivaldi

Glad to hear that your are liking Vivaldi.

With regards to the mail and calendar, it works with both GMail and Google Calendar. You can also use it with local calendars, which is what I do, and with most all IMAP and POP3 accounts.

So what does it mean for a browser to have AI built in? Does it mean that it is using your browsing data? Is it using it for ads or for profiling?

Is AI just another reason to collect your data? What are the so-called AI browsers doing today?

Would you use a browser that has AI built in?

I have provided three choices. The first one is that you want AI and do not care if the data is used for ads and profiling. Two : you do not want AI at all. Three: Want AI, but only if the data is not used for other purposes, such as ads and profiling.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@seanbala

Indeed. We have had very few users asking for us to provide AI in the browser, so we have not gone there.

At @Vivaldi we focus on the browser, but we also provide a few free services. What parts of Vivaldi are you using?

If you have not tried Vivaldi yet, a download at Vivaldi.com will get you started

jon,

@PawelK @Vivaldi

For sync to work, it needs storage in the cloud. However, you have a separate encryption password that means that the data is encrypted on our servers with a password that we do not have access to.

jon,
@jon@vivaldi.net avatar

@travisfw @Vivaldi

You should try it out. The blogs and forums can be found at Vivaldi.net. Vivaldi Automotive can be found in a number of cars, such as the select Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, Polestar, Renault, Ford, Lincoln and Lync & Co vehicles, with more being added every month.
