Because of the @Tusky storm in a teacup recently, I want to personally say that for any project I've donated to, including Tusky, that I am entirely, even enthusiastically, in favor of using that money to fund hiring and training junior developers, regardless of whether their PRs end up getting merged or not. I love that Tusky used the funds in that way and hope they, and others, will continue to invest in mentoring junior developers.

Ok, so successfully started my ilbm image parser

Now to just draw the rest of the owl

joncruz,

Well would you look at that? My little owl has some toes.

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

Drat! I've hit the point where it mainly makes sense to continue with visually presenting the image and palette. This means either hooking up to some existing program or doing my own.

Which means I now need to write a Gtk ilbm viewer to use this in?

Or are there any existing open source that need this?

I feel so soap-boxy lately, maybe because I’m teaching a class, but here’s another kernel of truth I’ll throw at y’all about communities:

If you are trying to get new people,especially diverse people and young people into your hobby, and your first reaction is to show off your really expensive kit and say how much it cost, you are gatekeeping mega mode, even if you’re just trying to share your interest. Nobody wants to hear there is a $1500 (or $5000) barrier to entry to their new hobby. It’s demoralizing, not educational, and they’re just gonna leave.

Happens in bicycles, drones, photography, astronomy, gaming, marksmanship… you name it, there’s a rich older white dude ready to show off his six grand investment in a hobby to a college student with a three digit bank account.

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@hacks4pancakes three digit??? Heck, luxury.

Ah yes, this is a great way to turn “Can I see your driver’s license?” into “Can you hand me your unlocked phone so I can rifle through it?” at a traffic stop.

Yes, it’s more convenient than having a separate card, and it may serve as a great backup in case your physical card is lost or damaged. But please don’t use this as your only driver’s license, especially if you are an often-targeted demographic.

“Californians can now carry driver’s licenses on their phone as part of pilot program”

So, I am watching the original miniseries, "V" (for the first time). Somehow I missed this when it came out.

Surprised by how well-made it is, actually. I was expecting it to be MUCH cheesier than this.

The parallels with the QAnon conspiracy universe are kind of chilling, though. Feels almost like this was the playbook they cribbed from: conspiracy of scientists, withholding findings because of "research grants". And of course, the aliens disguised as humans.

[...]

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@TerryHancock yeah, the whole Reptilian aliens control things was a long running conspiracy by the time the original came out

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@TerryHancock true.

I know someone who argued that the scientific consensus in the seventies was of a new ice age coming... Leonard Nemoy even narrated a documentary about it.

My point: "In Search Of" was not the bastion of scientific consensus

The first page of the uber-classified Star Fleet Command report on Talos IV in the "Star Trek" original series episode "The Menagerie" (pieced together into a two-part episode from the original unaccepted pilot "The Cage", and briefly visible when Kirk opens the report), seems to have a fixation on Spock's racial makeup. It twice notes that he's half-Vulcan. Hmm.

@lauren ah, but then the spoilers at the end give new light to this report's contents

Is there any pixel art software that had built on support for palette cycling effects? Kinda hard to make those if you can't see what's going on >_>

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@eniko let me know if there's something open source that might need it added. I did some early work trying to deal with Adobe's broken pallete implementation (invert numbers and reverse the display does not a solution make)

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@eniko drat. Looks like they might not be quick on the update. I literally have a patch that's been waiting for Sodipodi for literally over 20 years now. (Inkscape split because of the mess that was Sodipodi)

I might take a swing at it, though

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@eniko by any chance does Synfig do any of the things you need? I've not poked at it lately, and definitely done have an opinion from the artist side of things.

Color cycling does look interesting, and I did do a lot of IFF conversions tools for multimedia workflows back in the day. Hmmm...

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@eniko it's one of the more recent animation efforts that I first came across due to their support for SVG. Heck, I could probably force some of this into , but adside from icons that doesn't seem like the right tool.

(Hmm... but as a side note I did do most of its palette support... Might be good to at least enable those there)
