Well, I've dived into a new hobby again. !

I got myself a Bambu Lab A1 mini, and I am having so much freaking fun.

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@tylermumford congrats!

Doing your own models yet?

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@tylermumford what software are you using? I still need to get proficient at modern Blender, but have done most of my recent work with OpenSCAD or FreeCAD

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@tylermumford oh, yes. Most definitely. One of the good aspects is that all three I mentioned have versions for Linux, Mac, and Windows. So no platform lock-in.

Lemme try to track down some links, as I've given "I've stumbled into this cool tool" jumpstart intro talks on two of them.

I need to get my mind off the bad. Anything good going on tonight for anyone? Feel free to share things your excited about or happy about or just cool stuff you've come across recently

@aeva the black and white cat is currently to my side over on the back of the sofa, eyes closed, paws well in front of him, contented and "smiling" at me.

Cats. Good.

Interesting dynamics when I see a post get more boosts than likes. Not a common thing on other social networks.

I think it highlights the subtle difference of promoting communication over popularity.

Kinda replacing "Ooh, I like this. Let me share it" with "oh, this is interesting information. Let me spread it"

The Leaving Rust Gamedev article resonates with most of the frustrations I've had working on the internals of Tangerine (C++) since I converted it from being largely single threaded spaghetti to aggressively concurrent spaghetti, and that's making me think maybe I'd have a better time if I picked a different language for the hot paths, because necessary non-compulsory refactoring also kills iteration time.

I just don't know what though, because nothing ever seems to fit the bill of what I need.

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@aeva how's the vm? I remember it has some fundamental design issues limiting it as far as portability to non-intel, etc. goes.

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@aeva I'm wondering about the support for different processor types. I assume it probably has ok ARM support by now.

Hmmm... are any others even currently viable for gaming?

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@aeva oh, also the prevalence in the target demographic makes it a viable option as long as license and technological aspects don't get in the way.

Learning I decided to stick with their domain specific language because it seems decent and I don't have a bunch of C# baggage to drag me around.

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@aeva well... I know that it started out as Java mutated to support COM (with delegates thrown in because they were the pet feature of the poached architect) and was not a bad choice if you were doing Windows only products. Personally I preferred not to limit myself so stuck with C, C++, and Java (though now and again I have a business reason to use C#). I've also watched Windows dev teams fail in their "bring our app to Linux" efforts. Last couple of years it's finally more viable, but still...

My new thing is buying cheap CDs from charity shops instead of streaming. I cancelled Spotify about 8 months ago. Spent about the same on CDs. Think I might build a Pi based auto CD ripper :)

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@biglesp cheap CDs are good, but if you're dealing with smaller artists I'd think checking if they have a direct online presence to buy from them is best. Second place only to buying CDs directly from them at shows.

Today I've read about a bunch of farmers who probably had H5N1 but refuse to test, cats getting infected by drinking raw milk on farms, and a dolphin dead from it

Honestly not feeling very optimistic about this one. Wish I could trust any of the soothing things governments or media are saying about it but I won't fall into that trap again now I've seen how they behaved during the still ongoing covid pandemic

EDIT: And I should clarify I wasn't going out of my way to see H5N1 news, this is just stuff that has come across my feed organically in the 1 hour I've been awake lmao

Found out that the reason the anti-genocide protestors at Cal Poly built barricades is because the first night the cops drove a truck into the crowd of students, apparently trying to run them down.

something in my thought cabinet that I don't have any conclusions on yet: most forms of development planning I've worked with in my career have amounted to some form of acknowledging that you can't accurately estimate complex tasks, but then go and pretend you can accurately estimate small tasks, and precede to make up a set of small tasks, make up estimates for them, click them together like lego bricks, and viola there's your ship date or stack ranking KPIs or whatever

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@aeva thwo things:

Experienced devs can get a good sense of time. Early on I did a rough estimate of one project in the 9 months realm. Later I did a detailed breakdown and ended up with an estimate within a few days of the same value.
+/- a week or two one a 6-9 months project might be reasonable. Beyond that it does break down rapidly.

Two: if time on a project grows exponentially, the sum of many small exponential steps is very different than one large exponential one. Graphs explains much

joncruz,
@joncruz@mstdn.social avatar

@aeva my favorite successful schedule planning was when I led engineering at a multimedia startup in the start of the 90s when I'd tell the owner "1 week after the art department delivered the final approved assets" instead of "seven weeks from today".

Spoiler alert: engineering always delivered on time or early 😉

Key point - being good friends with the art department at the same time

Never quite worked up the impetus to attend or present at @linuxfoundation conferences since they struck me as a bit too "corporate". Now it's looking justified ☹️

I don't mind reform, but please be honest about it.

Hmmm ... What open source issue was I just looking at with involved... Oh yes, the whole mess. Just literally only a couple of days after I was talking with Microsoft reps at an conference.

Still a little stunned about that. It wasn't even that expensive, and there are still larger ones.

@TerryHancock last week I stopped by my local Target and picked up a 5tb portable laptop backup drive for $120. Crazy.

(Reminds me, I have still to dual boot back to Windows, let it update, then repartition that so I can resume my Linux backups)
