Every chance I've had to interact with satellite operators in conferences, I've asked them about their plans for dealing with solar storms (I'm particularly worried about Starlink, which requires dozens of maneuvers per day to avoid collisions. What if a large fraction shuts down for a few hours?!)

The universal response to my inquiries has been "Don't worry about that, it'll be fine!"

Yes, that is all so promising and we all owe you all for the efforts. I wish we could get to a point where the big funders (and there are many) recognize the need to put this whole project on steroids. With the stakes so high, we shouldn’t be talking about thousands, but rather, millions. And the money is out there. We have to somehow tell it the right story.

Horrifying news from Ukraine: According to Ukraine Army Commander Oleksandr Syrsky, Russia has broken through the frontline at Novobakhmutivka in the Donetsk oblast.

You can see the progress on these screenshots from DeepStateMap. First picture is April 10. Second picture is yesterday.

Syrsky mentions lack of equipment as one of the reasons, Ukraine is now retreating.

Mike Johnson truly deserves a Hero of Russia medal.

This is huge: yesterday, the FTC finalized a rule banning noncompete agreements for every American worker. That means that the person working the register at a Wendy's can switch to the fry-trap at McD's for an extra $0.25/hour, without their boss suing them:

The venerable Voyager 1 spacecraft is experiencing another glitch. Instead of sending science and engg. data, it is sending a 0101 bit pattern.

The problem has been narrowed down to the flight data system (FDS), which is not communicating properly with the telecom unit (TMU). A reboot did not help.

Stay tuned as NASA engrs work out a fix for this 1970's era computer, which has performed magnificently during its long 46-year journey to the planets and to outer space.

Hallelujah! And Congrats all around.

JPL just announced that engineering data was successfully received from the Voyager 1 spacecraft on Saturday April 20, the first time since Nov 2023.

The commands sent on Thu to relocate some code around the failed memory chip in the FDS worked as expected.

Science data is not being received yet; it will require relocation of some more code in the sparse free memory areas in the FDS.
