In the 2nd edition of Papers We Love (and 20th webinar!), we tackled the famous article Mel Conway’s article where he introduced his law.

You probably already know the quote:

"Organizations which design systems (in the broad sense used here) are constrained to produce designs which are copies of the communication structures of these organizations."

We’ve read the whole paper to check how up-to-date it is nowadays.

We really don’t make enough of the fact that you don’t need JS to make a nice website. Just HTML and CSS

And, whatever most programmers say about them, HTML and CSS are absolutely much more accessible to learn than JS ever has been or will be

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

So the code underpinning Copilot+ Recall includes a whole bunch of Azure AI backend code, which has ended up in the Windows OS. It also has a ton of API hooks for user activity monitoring.

Apps themselves can also search and make themselves more searchable.

It opens a lot of attack surface.

The semantic search element is fun.

They really went all in with this and it will have profound negative implications for the safety of people who use Microsoft Windows.

GossiTheDog,
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

If you want to know where tech companies are with AI safety, know Microsoft Recall won’t record screenshots of DRM’d movies..

..but will record screenshots of your financial records and WhatsApp messages, as corporate interests were prioritised over user safety.

And it’s enabled by default.

While we do have criticisms of its centralized architecture and other choices we highly regard Signal for ushering in a decade of popularizing end-to-end encryption. We particularly appreciate @Mer__edith doing excellent communication work there. It's disingenuous that tech-billionaires Musk/Dorsey fuel attacks on her and another female colleague, hinting at Telegram as a more secure messenger. Comparing security of Signal with Telegram simply results in "Type Error: incompatible arguments".

Delta Chat is among the shrinking number of messaging applications that does not look at your data except to end-to-end encrypt it and send it over interoperable message transport servers chosen by yourselves and your contacts. ftw!

Hi @nick! Thank you for your questions! Our old instance was created, hosted and managed by @EDPS as part of a pilot project for a Mastodon server. As the pilot project was coming to an end, we decided to build on its success by setting a permanent instance, ensuring the continued and uninterrupted presence of our institution on Mastodon. The new instance is hosted and managed by the European Commission and has no expiry date.
