EDIT: I have given up.

Guys, I'm feeling frustrated and stumped.

Sitting at my sister's home, I can use the WLAN easily. Lappy connects to it automatically.

But I have LAN (yes, a physical cable) in my guest room that would give me better speed. I plug it into the laptop - and it will not connect. I even gave LAN priority in the settings.

I cannot find a setting to tell it to use the darn ethernet cable. Where do I look?

Running Kubuntu / Plasma on an Acer Travelmate.

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@Firlefanz It's supposed to just work. I just tested it too.

First troubleshooting step. Is the cable even physically detected? I.e.: Do you see a green blinky light in the ethernet ports? I don't know if your laptop has one, so you might have to track the cable to the router/network switch.

Hey #aeropress people. Need recommendations on an adjustable manual #coffee grinder. Bonus if it is packable to throw in my bag for travel.

@greg I don't have firsthand experience with the specific combination, but I know the Aergrind is specifically designed to fit inside the Aeropress, and well acclaimed.

My day started with my espresso machine kicking the bucket... I case y'all are wondering how things are going over here :/

It's pouring rain, construction is loud. I feel grumpy and have a bit of a headache.

Debating how much I can afford to spend on a new machine right now... And if I can get one local ish in Westport, or if it needs to wait til I go back. 5 days with no latte sounds like so many.

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@MsHearthWitch
What machine do you have now? I wonder how fixable it is, if you feel up to it. I'd be willing to help interpret schematics.

Otherwise, I haven't used the Solis, but it's a sibling brand to the Breville that keeps getting recommended, and a reputable choice.

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@MsHearthWitch Very understandable. I'm automatically assuming those reasons are valid.

When I was just exploring instruments, I felt a lot more confident about my abilities as a guitarist. Now that I’m more focused on electric guitar, I am surprised at how I really feel it hard when all the “legendary” guitar lists I come across only feature men. I end up feeling like I don’t belong. I’m still a singer-songwriter first. But I want more female/non-binary/trans guitarists in my world, and some who are also living well and paying the bills with their music. :blobcatcoffee:

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@ambergrey Here's a few I'm paying attention to in the new generation.

Yasmin Williams (experimental folk)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKDoVuG7uZ0 (mallet & kalimba at 10:49)

Abigail Zachko (math rock, jazz fusion)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_5MP14vQsc (album version with vocals + band: https://thiswasplanned.bandcamp.com/track/seafoam-2)

Melanie Faye (neosoul)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL9RHok8Thg

Li-sa-X (metal)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN_oLqTka6M

And promising up-and-comers keep popping up. I'm excitedly keeping my ears peeled.

Hold fast, the shakeup is just beginning.

Does anyone know how to correctly clean the neck and fretboard on the Charvel dk24s? I read there’s a slight satin finish that could be damaged by steel wool. :blobcatcoffee: Thanks!

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@ambergrey
Unfortunately, I also read that the pickups could be damaged by the metal dust from the steel wool, even if you cover the pickups with tape.

If you want to polish your frets with micromesh, I used this pack, along with a fretboard guard (but would otherwise have just used masking tape):

https://www.stringsbymail.com/micromesh-multi-pack-12000-8000-6000-4000-3200-2400-6-sheets-5349.html
(There's also a smaller pack)

Also nice because it's also useful for fountain pen nibs.

Also, they sell individual guitar picks, so it's a convenient chance to try a bunch.

TIL: HDMI is actually quite a closed system and the HDMI Forum has successfully blocked AMD from supporting 120Hz @ 4K in their Open Source drivers because they disallow Open Source implementations of (that part of) the standard.

I see a lot of people talk about "just use DisplayPort" because it is supposedly more open, but I can't find much about that when searching the web. Does anyone here know more about that? Got some good sources? Should I ensure all new stuff I buy has DisplayPort?

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@SylvieLorxu Apparently USB-C uses DisplayPort as its protocol, so if your combinations of devices and cables support it with sufficient bandwidth, I think you should be also set with that.

This is why I have long-term hope for DisplayPort eventually crushing HDMI.

A little warning though, that DisplayPort version alone isn't enough to determine the supported resolution+refresh rate. I found this article (and site in general) helpful: https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/a-guide-to-displayport-2-1-and-previously-2-0-certifications-standards-cables-and-areas-of-confusion-and-concern

Or other non-Apple-or-Android tablet?

Anything with a sim for cellular data?

Keen to hear your experiences.

mark_pc, (edited )
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@cyberlyra I have a Pinetab 2, running the stock Arch Linux image. I completely agree with its advertising as an inexpensive tablet for Linux early-adopter enthusiasts and developers. It's not good for regular use at all, yet. The drivers aren't there yet, most notably the wifi. Gpu acceleration doesn't work for a lot of things like Firefox so it's slow. The screen's driver is apparently incomplete so the night mode orange screen doesn't work.

It's okay for PDFs (Okular).

Thanks to @tinyfluffs , there's now an easy-ish power solution for the Prusa Mini: https://nz.mouser.com/ProductDetail/MEAN-WELL/GST220A24-R7B?qs=XfZQyRplo5QmgbOd16EIcQ%3D%3D

Drop-in replacement, and gives you a 220W power budget, instead of the measly 150W which the Mini regularly over-draws.

@3dprinting

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@koz @lytta
As a stopgap, would it be helpful/possible to limit the maximum duty cycle in the firmware settings (MAX_BED_POWER) to mitigate the power spikes, at the expense of slower heating? This is assuming the Mini doesn't use an electromechanical relay.

Hey , I have an RTX 2070 Super and since I'm a Linux gamer 98% of the time, I've been thinking about going team red. I found a dude who might be down to trade me a Radeon VII for my 2070S... is that a good deal or a bad deal?

Linux compatibility should be way better, and it seems like performance is comparable, but idk about raytracing performance and I've heard the R VII can be pretty loud.

Opinions? Advice?

mark_pc,
@mark_pc@hachyderm.io avatar

@thatdosbox @ADHDefy On Linux, this only affects the AMDVLK driver. You would still be good to go with RADV instead.

Tea reviews:

Usually I drink Taiwanese oolongs but farmers in Thailand and India and Nepal have been doing good work with some cultivars. “Ruby oolong” seems to be a variant of ‘jin xuan’, which is what I drink more of. This one from Darjeeling is velvety, fruitier than a jin xuan

I buy it at Rainbow Grocery in SF at bulk rates, a bit cheaper than the price straight from them:

The one from Rishi is from Thailand: https://rishi-tea.com/products/organic-ruby-oolong-tea

Hey coffee fedi, my aeropress has died again (plunger shrank, is weeping gross oil 🙃) and I kinda don’t want to keep making coffee in plastic, even when I’m traveling.

Does anyone have better, ideally non-plastic travel press recs from personal experience? Search results are hard to trust and I can find little french presses but they are so goopy and messy. (And I love you, pour over people, but I cannot deal with all that on the road.)

Recently tried my first Pu-Erh. I don't know what I thought it was going to taste like, but I didn't expect it to taste like actual wood.

Of course I bought an entire bag instead of a sample, because samples are really pricey for how little tea they contain. So sunk-cost fallacy demands that I acquire the taste.

Hello lovers. I'm looking for recommendations available as samples (in the US). I've acquired the taste and now I want to try more. I keep hearing how interesting puerhs can be, and I'm feeling a little adventurous.
