I noticed the LinkedIn profile link, too. A strong link with BigTech.

Yes. LinkedIn used to be valuable, but now I just get lots of what I consider to be "SPAM notifications" from my LinkedIn account.

It has very much turned into something like Facebook, but supposedly for business and career building.

Microsoft purchased LinkedIn back in 2016, so almost eight years ago already. I had an account before it was purchased by Microsoft.

I tried out today. It's in the debian repositories so fast installation and easy to use, guided setup process.

Should have tried it years ago.

A side benefit is being able to record all my logins and important information in one file (the keepassxc database file), back it up, and then share it with my loved ones with the unlock password given to them stored in a safe place.

If something happens to me, they'll be able to access my accounts.

As I juggle both a Linux and FreeBSD server - is there a real good reason to pick one shell vs others? They naively seem similarly capable, and it's more a matter of just picking one with good tutorials and running with it? I'm hardly a shell-scripting wizzard.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

I'm trying ZSH, as it seems a bit more in line with the Unix way of thinking and is MIT licensed.

Bash is just there on most of the servers I manage and I haven't yet changed it.

matthew, to sysadmin
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

I've been doing more research on email servers and email hosting.

It would be great to talk with a Sys Admin who handles email for multiple domains and clients.

I am working with a company who has been doing web design and hosting for their web design clients since the '90s.

They hosted their email starting way back when and have been using the same email server pretty much ever since. It needs to be replaced soon.

The question is what to replace it with.

Host our own? And all the complications that come with that.

Manage the email but host somewhere else with a company that specializes in email? Such as MXroute:

https://mxroute.com

Host our own email IMAP accounts, but use a separate service for sending mail so we don't have to worry about deliver-ability?

Let me know if you have experience with a similar situation.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

Yeah, it'd be great to just use something else instead of the current email system.

I was thinking about as a having potential to do that while driving on my way home this evening.

matthew,
@matthew@social.retroedge.tech avatar

For business reasons, I think I am stuck with figuring out a solution for traditional .

I share your sentiments about having and using viable replacements.

seems like it has so much promise, but there's doesn't seem to be much movement toward it. We self-host a xmpp server, so have some experience with it, but not a lot.

I'm running out of time. If I don't have a job in 6 weeks, I am truly fucked. I'm applying to everything I can find that I'm remotely qualified for, and mostly hearing crickets or "fuck you, we aren't moving forward." I've had two entire interviews since September 8. If you're somewhere that needs a REMOTE (willing to travel to client sites) security analyst/pentester/threat researcher at a senior (or even mid) level and you haven't already posted the position on job sites, please let me know. I am very good at what I do, I just need someone to give me a chance to do it.

You are wearing a pink mask, use impolite (potentially unprofessional ) language in your posts, and advocate for violence in your profile.

Most people would understand why you are having difficulty finding employment.

I recommend focusing on freelance and contract work so you can do productive short term jobs with your skill set.

You didn't ask for my input... but you did post about your situation, so there's that.

I've admired Lua for a while. I like how simple, small and fast it is.

I have heard that Lua has language design concepts that are similar to Lisp and Scheme. You may know more about that than I do.

Frustrating experience with an older client.

Due to a slow and failing hard drive, I did a lot of work on her computer today, upgrading to an SSD. Much faster now. Fixed login issues by switching to a local login instead of a Microsoft login... you may know where this is going.

Got the computer back to her. Checking it over with her.

"Where's my calendar that I keep my entire life in?"

Months back I had helped her migrate her calendar to Thunderbird so it wouldn't be in a Microsoft product and would be easy to back up. Unbeknownst to me, she didn't keep using Thunderbird but went back to Outlook because ... Change Is Hard.

Turns out that there were multiple Microsoft Accounts associated with her Outlook 365. When I switched to a local login to fix a login issue, it disconnect all of them. The account where we think the calendar data is stored, she doesn't know the password. Account recovery is not working.

Right now I don't want to work on computers with Microsoft products on. At all. Of course, not realistic, as the majority of my local customers use Windows.

Rewatching the original Star Wars trilogy and I'm going to say something extremely controversial

The Galactic Empire design aesthetic reminds me of Apple in that everything seems to have a purpose, clearly thought out, clean, sleek, etc.

The Resistance design aesthetic is very.. Android/Linux, wires hanging from walls, DIY, lots of buttons and thingamajigs…

idk what the deeper implications of this are if any, but I can honestly say The Galactic Empire has a good design eye

Interior of an imperial ship hallway. Large overhead rectangular lights, grey walls with various angles. Trapezoid style windows in the background.
Interior of the Millennium Falcon. ductwork and wires hanging, yellowish in color. R2-D2 standing by the chess couch.
Interior shot of the Millennium Falcon cockpit facing into the ship. Chewy, C3P0, Leia, and Han are front and center. Buttons and lights appear above them.

Possible take on your observation:

Corporate design may look good and provides standardization that moves forwards the goals of the large organization and brings conformity to those it subjects.

Corporate design does not further the goals of the individual and it is not representative of organic systems that arise out of freedom.

... but the makers of the film may not have been consciously aware of that. Or were they?

I'm upgrading an HP EliteBook 745 G6 laptop for a customer who is purchasing it from me.

I took out the 512GB SSD and replaced it with a 1TB nvme SSD. Took out the two 8GB memory modules and replaced them with two 16GB modules for 32GB. Of that, the AMD GPU reserves 2GB and has shared memory of 15GB. So the GPU has plenty of memory available to it for a little laptop.

The processor is a Ryzen 7 Pro 3700U

I've been selling more of these HP EliteBook laptops with Ryzen processors. I hope to put one to more testing, but selling them almost as fast as I get them in.

I think an ideal model for me to test is the 13 inch version of this model, the EliteBook 735 G6, as I think the 13 inch size is ideal for how I use a laptop (currently using a ThinkPad T470s and the 14 inch screen is just a bit too large for comfort with how I carry a laptop around).
