Just a friendly reminder that if you store your government ID on your phone and find yourself in a situation where you have to show a cop your ID, you'll have to hand them your unlocked phone to do it.

My personal crusade against the "minimized keyboard accessory" control for iPadOS continues.

Today's example: I wanted to create a new folder in the Notes app, but I couldn't because that thing was covering the button. 😡

@marcoarment I am very curious about the potential trademark issues. Strongly suspect he didn't even check the uspto.gov database -- and it's clear that Apple did, before the OS release, and subsequently defended it.

The numbers of those who don't affiliate with any religion are surging in the U.S., but only 4% of Americans self-identify as "atheist." And while we may not have an official national religion, Christianity is largely baked into many aspects of our culture. With it comes stigma attached to atheism, which makes many reluctant to embrace it.

But why? Should the lack of religious belief really be looked upon any differently than belief? We unpack that question and more today in The Big Picture: https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/atheism-america-stigma-religion-christianity

medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@georgetakei atheism has been presented in U.S. courts as a religion. It's a denial of deity, not a denial of religion.

I’ve always been interested in woodworking (used to do a lot when I was a kid), so I thought I’d go down that YouTube rabbit hole a bit, and it’s all some moderately serviceable advice being given by a white guy in a t-shirt that says some version of “I love when cops kill Black people”. jfc

Three years of using expensive note-taking software doesn’t seem to be making me a better thinker. I wrote about why that is — and whether a new generation of AI tools can help https://www.platformer.news/p/why-note-taking-apps-dont-make-us

medievalist,
@medievalist@writing.exchange avatar

@caseynewton I think the key to useful notes is making connections, not by linking bt by writing about them. I still take a lot of notes by hand, though they end up in HTML. I learned that the point of notes is essentially to do two things: Help us remember what we have learned, not only because we can go back to the note, but by taking notes, not copying raw sources, but by extracting and syncretizing, we make the information ours. mere retrieval to add personal context. 1/2

One thing I don't get in these apple presentations is all the SharePlay features. I've never watched a movie with a friend thousands of miles away. I thought about it and could only predict I'd ask them to be quiet so I don't miss any movie/show/jokes/spoilers/etc so I haven't tried it before. Also, I don't know how into a movie I could be with three friend's faces on FaceTime staring back at me on the side of the movie.

I'm curious what user uptake is like for SharePlay.

So after that comment from @benbloodworth I did remember that back in 2019 I took like a dozen trips up to NH when my father fell ill before he passed. When I would fly up, the iPad was packed in my one travel carry on bag and that would typically get stuffed under the seat in front of me, I’d shove the iPad into the chair pockets with charging cords, keys, etc. tight fits, lots of pressure…

This has to be the reason for all the dings. Note to self, better case / treatment for next iPad. 😢

Thanks to donations from two generous members of the local book arts community, today we moved a bunch of new equipment into Skeuomorph Press, including:

  1. Six—that’s right, SIX—beautiful trays of wood type
  2. A new type cabinet, with a few new metal fonts, including a Hebrew one!
  3. A tabletop proofing press in stellar condition
  4. A new galley cabinet full of galley trays & a book binding press

A tall wooden cabinet with drawers for holding moveable type
A table top metal printing press with a roller that slides back and forth to make an impression
A tall metal cabinet with lots of metal galleys inside it’s slots. On top sits a cast iron book binding press with a large screw in the center and a wheel at the top
