Alright, this will probably be the last update for anyone following along, but I decided to just delete the "accounts" folder inside /home/mastodon/live/public/system/cache, get a list of accounts I follow via Mastodon's API, and then run "tootctl accounts refresh" on all of them.
I don't get accounts that make hundreds of follows, but never post anything, or if they have, they have done so on a previous account / instance and only once...it's really weird behaviour #Fediverse#Mastodon#Following#follower
As usual, I #know nothing about it, just familiar with its symbol ...
So far I have #downloaded an RSS program, #Firefox#extension and tried to make sense of them or at least use in some #relevant way ...
Was kann da wohl alles passieren möchte?
It looks at the people you follow and the people they follow and ranks them by the number of follows from your followed. Hopefully you will find some people who were on here all along but who you hadn't found yet - I did.
I feel that the #fediverse's lack of an #algorithm is more toxic than #Twitter; on #mastodon's #chronological timeline I feel like I'm missing out on important signal in the noise so I have to spend more time combing through it, exploring #hashtags, #following them, #mute words, build #lists, etc. With Twitter there were ads, but also there was all the best stuff since the last time you logged in, sorted by how interesting it would be to YOU! That was awesome; I miss that!
I know opt-in full text #search is coming to Mastodon, and I have seen people looking for the right #hashtags to follow for their various topics of interest, so I wonder if at some point Mastodon might support a search like this:
"Find me the hashtags that are most frequently associated with this search pattern: ..."
If that were a thing, it would make #hashtag#following much, much better.
🥥 I made up rules about #following back:
1 ) No banner 1 demerit.
2 ) No avatar -- or only generic symbol -- 1 demerit
3 ) No posts, no replies, no media -- 3 demerits
4 ) No one follows you -- 1 demerit
5 ) You don't follow anyone -- 2 demerits
6 ) You like 1 of my toots -- 1 credit
7 ) You boost my toot -- 3 credits
8 ) You comment on my toot -- 5 credits
9 ) R U funny? -- Auto in
-5 or more: I usually won't #follow you back.
Now you know what to do to get ME to follow YOU back. 🥥
I just saw it again: "Please boost my introduction and follow me, I'm looking for a community coming from elsewhere."
The person follows - attention - nobody.
The #Fediverse doesn't work like this. Before you collect followers and boosts, follow others, communicate, and write content. It's like real life: you drink coffee with other people before they gossip about your life story around the village.😉 #newcomers#following#boosts
BUT! For new followers, #Mastodon shows now the #follower numbers instead of the profile description prominently (browser version). Such a deterioration, @Gargron !
I always read your descriptions and content before #following. I follow if you have 10 or 100,000 followers IF I'm interested.
But now we are downgraded to a name with follower numbers. Before the change, I saw personalities. (App seems still ok)
If you have a Mastodon account and follow someone, the follow button will sometimes display a "Follow request sent" message.
Usually this is because the other account has follow approval switched on, which means its owner will manually decide whether to accept your follow request. This kind of account has a padlock 🔒 icon next to it on its profile page.
However... Mastodon also displays this "Follow request sent" message if something has gone wrong with the follow, especially if you're trying to follow someone on a non-Mastodon server.
Partially broken federation often causes Mastodon to display this message, for some reason.
If you see "follow request sent" when you try to follow someone, and they don't have a padlock 🔒 on their profile page, then it's likely that the follow didn't work properly.
If a follow doesn't work properly, try unfollowing them (or cancel the follow request), wait a bit, then click "follow" again.
