Hi our servers are on AWS and I am unable fetch resources from your site using those servers. For instance I can see that our server is attempting to fetch your remote key using a signed http request to https://fediversity.site/channel/mikedev?operation=rsakey. Also I cannot webfinger you account from our server. Is is possible that your are blocking traffic from our egress?
Note I also tried without using a VPN and cannot access you server.
@tod@mike@FlipboardCS@MonaApp So the root of this thread started on mastodon, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to a stardated mention. Because it is following the url and not opening the mention IOS will attempt to open the URL's using the flipboard app.
Today we're taking another important step in our journey to fully federate Flipboard.
This morning we federated 1,000 Flipboard Magazines curated by the publishers we have been testing federation with in addition to 20 new publishers we are federating today. These include magazines like Adventure Travel by Outside, Eater DC by Eater, Explore NYC by Thrillist, Throwbacks by SPIN, and Climate Tech by Bloomberg.
Flipboard Magazines are a simple way to curate articles, images, videos and podcasts into a thematic feed. This powerful curation tool has been at the heart of Flipboard since 2012 with millions of magazines curated since about recipes, road trips, architecture, books, tech trends and so much more.
Federated magazines become native #ActivityPub feeds and can be followed by anyone on Mastodon. For example, check out my Following the Fediverse magazine @following
I believe that thoughtfully curated feeds have the power to make social media a lot more effective and inspiring so I'm excited to bring millions of these magazines to the #Fediverse as we federate all public curators in the next few weeks.
Check out my Medium post for more details along with a list of some of the great magazines we federated today.
@molly0xfff is one of the most thoughtful and prolific writers on the internet right now. Post after post filled with deeply informed observations, critiques and insights. I know most people who are helping to shape the future of the web follow Molly already but just in case you aren't, you should.
You’re going to love this episode of Dot Social with @coachtony CEO of Medium. He says “there’s a huge difference between what someone is willing to read and what someone is happy to have paid to read”
How do you build a system that rewards great writing? How can you scale expert curation so readers can discover that writing in a sea of AI spam? How will the #fediverse enable writers to connect with their ideal audience?
"Aren’t you actually helping Nazis here, making their ideology seem alluring by turning into forbidden knowledge?
Genocidal anti-semitism is hardly forbidden knowledge; you can find it just about anywhere. The Nazi worldview is taught in schools, figures prominently in popular culture, and endures in forums all across the internet. I believe Nazi ideology is made more appealing by the people who spread it than it is by the people who choose not to host it."
@mike@caseynewton Also, you signal that it is objectionable material, not accepted in society. Just like CSAM, violent religious extremism, or other kinds of content that society has collectively deemed unacceptable and/or illegal. There’s no “silent majority” here who thinks nazism has some good points. Society at large has rejected this ideology since WWII.
One of my favorite parts of this interview with @tchambers is when he wraps up with his 2024 predictions for the #Fediverse and #ActivityPub including the things he's looking for as this crucial election year plays out. He gives a sweeping and insightful summary of the most important efforts now underway which will bear fruit this year.
Does decentralization make moderation better or worse? Will the #Fediverse deteriorate as millions more users join? Can tens of thousands of local instance owners do a better job at spotting and combating disinformation than the walled gardens can?
I asked @tchambers these questions and more to get his expert opinion and thoughts. Here's a great clip along with a link to the full conversation on PeerTube.
@mike@tchambers Thank you for this. I put it on this morning and enjoyed it with my first cup of coffee. Great conversation, very interesting topic. You guys are doing good work and I appreciate you.
There need to be mechanisms to prevent the bad actors from screwing things up, to reward the good actors, and to educate the indifferent so they appreciate their new found openness.
Most people outside the tech industry don’t understand open and aren’t motivated to switch to something just because it’s open.
If open looks and feels the same as closed, closed will win.
If open is more confusing than closed, closed will win.
If those who have been working on open revert to closed in the name of preventing bad actors, closed will win.
If open wins we get things like the web. Imperfect but far greater for humanity than most everyone being online via AOL.
We’re at a precious moment in time for the fediverse. When it comes to social media, open has a real chance right now. And closed is on the ropes. Let’s not blow it.
One thing I absolutely love is that hitting star in Mastodon just sends an appreciative signal to the poster. It doesn't influence algorithms. It doesn't shape what I see in my timeline. It doesn't broadcast a signal to my followers that I favorited something.
It just does one thing incredibly well: it sends a simple thanks.
@sickmatter well, fair point. I guess that will happen at some level. Fortunately it's not influencing my feed or broadcasting the fav to my followers.
One of the big things @Gargron talks about in this interview is his experience with #XMPP and whether or not the embrace, extend, extinguish playbook would work in the #fediverse. This discussion happens at minute 41
And there's also the recent happening where Tutanota got blocked by MS due to supposed spam, and they were having a struggle getting off a blacklist. https://tuta.com/blog/outlook-falsely-marks-tutanota-emails-as-junk
They are not exactly a small company.
If they are having trouble, how is a little company going to fix a similar problem? They will just be ignored.
Bad things happen when companies get too big (#enshittification). Threads' parent is huge and should be viewed with suspicion.
The last 10 days have been a whirlwind for the #fediverse. Important new versions of @mammoth and @ivory launched. Wordpress and Tumblr reaffirmed their commitment to ActivityPub. And Threads and Flipboard began to federate. What does this all mean for the fediverse? How will moderation work? Who will be next to federate?
I'm excited to let you know that we have stood up our very own #PeerTube instance. This is so cool. We've posted all the videos for my Dot Social podcast. We also posted our original Flipboard launch video for fun.
