According to FediDB, monthly active users on the fediverse have dropped to 1,005,573 😳 Looks like they might drop below 1 million if the downward trend continues.

@noellemitchell It's strange how shows the numbers of users and servers going up and up, but the number of MAU going steadily down. Maybe there's a miscalculation somewhere.

"[H]ighly-educated people [...] tend to be significantly worse at gauging others’ political beliefs, often assuming other people are much more extreme or dogmatic than they actually seem to be. This is perhaps because, compared to the general public, highly-educated or intelligent people tend to be more ideological in their thinking, more ideologically rigid, and more extreme in their ideological leanings."

Research "suggests that those who are highly educated, intelligent or rhetorically-skilled tend to be significantly less likely than most to revise their beliefs or adjust their positions when confronted with evidence or arguments that contradict their priors. This is because, in virtue of knowing more about the world, or being better at arguing, they are better equipped to punch holes in data or arguments that contradict their priors, or to otherwise make excuses for “sticking to their guns”."

It's common in liberal states to have a hierarchy of rules: regulations, statute law, constitutional law. It is also common for rules of order for assemblies to require different levels of support for different measures: plurality support to pass bills and motions, 2/3 majority to reconsider, unanimous consent to suspend rules temporarily.

I wonder if any states have different levels of statutory law, i.e. certain laws passed with say 2/3 support of the assembly over-ride regular laws.

"Some have quite rightly asked: Is it really worth $225 million not to have to wait another 18 months? The answer is absolutely not. It’s grotesque. What the government should have done was simply cancel the existing MFA with The Beer Store via legislation, on the grounds it was a product of rank political corruption. (In fact it said it would do this, but legislation to that effect was never enacted.)"

“The thing that really upset Dorsey: Bluesky users demanded moderation and Bluesky put it into place. Yeah, that was the whole issue.”

Good reflection on “decentralized” social media and what Dorsey really wants from it by @davidgerard:

mpjgregoire,
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@parismarx
I read the original interview with Mr. Dorsey. What he wanted out of Bluesky was not a new social network, but a new decentralised protocol for social networks — that's an entirely reasonable goal. Bluesky has a protocol, but at present it's primarily a network. It’s understandable that Mr. Dorsey is disappointed.

@davidgerard

mpjgregoire,
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@wjmaggos
Mr. Gerard mentions in his article the strange omission of ActivityPub from Mr. Dorsey's interview. I can see why he might think ActivityPub doesn't meet all his goals for a protocol, but the fact that it already exists and is growing should be reason to work for improvement, not to start a new initiative.

What is the difference between and ?

I mean, how was the Blender community able to create an industry-level software beloved by both enthusiasts and professionals and supported by the big players? Meanwhile the users, despite being ripped-off and spat on daily by , won't touch GIMP with a ten meter pole and it squarely remains the weapon of choice only for occasional users?

mpjgregoire,
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@FifiSch The major reason I've heard why Photoshop users don't want to use GIMP is that the interface is too different — they've invested lots of time learning how to use Photoshop and don't want to throw away that knowledge.

I could speculate about why similar concerns are not an impediment for Blender, but I haven't used it or similar software, and don't even know anyone who has.

@jszym@cosocial.ca avatar

My current workflow includes using a #windows Virtual Machine for the sole purpose of running #Microsoft Office and #OneDrive , and this clunky solution is still leagues better than actually running Windows on nearly every measure.

The pain the limited time I spend in that wee VM window underscores how bad Windows has gotten over the years.

mpjgregoire,
@mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca avatar

@jszym There's a Linux client for OneDrive, and I understand it's supported directly under the newest version of GNOME.

I wonder if it's possible to use LibreOffice and have sufficient compatibility with MS Office for your purposes...

I also have to use MS products for work, but the IT department keeps things locked down.
