Puye Cliff Dwellings | The village consisted of two levels of caves cut into the cliffs and the ruins of a large pueblo on top of the mesa. There are over a dozen “stairs” from the top of the mesa to the base of the cliff. The stairs linked the Community House on top of the mesa to the dwellings at the base of the cliff, as well as to sources of water north of the pueblo - https://newmexiconomad.com/puye-cliff-dwellings/

The Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness encompasses 41,170 acres of rock formations that would seem more natural on Mars. It is one of several protected badlands in the Four Corners area. Ah-She-Sle-Pah Wilderness is a few miles south. Angel Peak badlands is about 20 miles northeast.

Unlike dunes composed of quartz-based sand, gypsum does not readily convert the sun’s energy into heat. As a result, the surface temperature of White Sands doesn’t get as hot as sand on a beach. Walking barefoot on the dunes is comfortable most of the year. Even when the surface of the sand gets too hot, it is cool just below the surface, because the gypsum retains moisture from the playa of the Alkali Flat.

There are several fascinating ghost towns in New Mexico, each with a twisted tale to tell. However, Elizabethtown is one of my favorites. It burned brightly and briefly. These days it is peaceful, and quiet, hardly the raucous, hard scrapping town that existed in 1870. There isn’t much left in terms of structures or people, but, at one time, the town supported 7000 people. Miners extracted millions of dollars of gold and copper from the surrounding mountains and stream beds.

Warren & Joan Malkerson bought a “herd” of aluminum burros in 2005 & invited local artists to paint them and set them up outside businesses, along the road, or on top of buildings around . Almost every artist in Lincoln County painted one, w/400+ sold so far, funding animal rescue.
