OK, but have you ever tried hugging a tree? Don't knock it before you try it.

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

@futurebird No, but I’ve been known to stick my nose on a tree and sniff the bark.

My kids STILL give me crap about it, but i don’t care. The difference between various trees is fascinating.

Once I fixed the Frontier tech’s rookie mistake - he plugged the WAN line into the 1gb port - it’s screaming fast.

Replaced the supplied Amazon eero router with a TP-Link 2.5gb router, plugged in a new 2.5gb switch, and reconnected the eero to THAT, it still screams and the rest of the wired network gets 2.5gb speed, too, where the device supports it.

It shouldn’t be this hard,

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

Still messy, but better than it has been inside the cabinet.

Since the Frontier tech had no idea what a MoCA network is, he didn’t have an adapter to connect the existing cable network to the Ethernet network.

The eero router is now serving as an IoT network, using a VLAN to separate the traffic from the main house network. The big HP desktop that used to serve as router + VPN has been retired. A cellular hotspot (visible to the right) now serves as a backup to the fiber network.

Now to add some shelves and cable management to tidy up.

I hope this is just bad anecdotal data.

Rented a Chevy Bolt EUV for this overnight stay. Drove it about 40 miles.

Found a ChargePoint near the airport rental return to top it off.

First charger wouldn’t connect. Says the charger isn’t “fully inserted.” I have a plug in hybrid at home, so I know how these things work.

Switched to the second charger (of 2), and it started right up. Says it will take … wait for it … TWO AND A HALF HOURS to put 40 miles back on the battery.

No. Fucking. Way.

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

Someone just pulled up next to me and plugged in with the other charger.

Now it says FIVE HOURS because we’re “sharing”

This can’t be everyday EV experience, can it?

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

@vinc I tried that, and then reset it and tried again. No luck.

When I switched to the second charger in the same station, it started right up.

When someone pulled in next to me and used the first one, it worked for them first try 🤷

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

The one lucky break was the rental gatekeeper didn’t know how to read the battery gauge and put down 80%, so there was no charge. Pun intended.

I’m not alone. I was in Texas, this article is from the LA Times in California.

https://edition.pagesuite.com/popovers/dynamic_article_popover.aspx?guid=0bac0c84-816e-4113-b6ad-229e73e19148&v=sdk

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

Not surprising.

Article today in the L.A. Times about releasing still more money to charger network companies right after bashing them for so many failed chargers in the field today.

From the article:

California Air Resources Board staffer Jennifer Gress said the first lesson is “it’s really difficult to predict the future.” For example, she said, early on “we didn’t anticipate the need for maintenance and upgrades.” 🤡

I am shocked - shocked, I tell you! - that cables and connectors in a public space might need maintenance and repair periodically.

I wanted to congratulate the @upfield brand on increasing the price of “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter” spread to the point it’s consistently MORE expensive than real butter.

“The J.H. Filbert company, based in Baltimore, Maryland, developed the product in 1979 as a low-cost alternative to butter for the food service industry.”

The “one pound” tub of water and palm oil is now only 15 ounces, while a pound of butter is still 16 ounces.

16 ounce pckages of Stater Bros. Markets salted butter on a supermarket shelf with a tag displaying $4.49. That’s 28.1 cents/oz

So it seems that Verizon’s “unlimited (but limited)” hotspot plans are based on a lie.

The “slower internet after X gb of data” that they pass off as limiting “cell tower congestion” is bullshit.

They’re selling 5G “home internet” with speeds up to 1GB/sec and NO CAP on data. For as low as $35/mo. The best hotspot plan is $80/mo with 150GB /mo. and then dial-up speeds.

By definition, “home Internet” only uses one or two towers. It isn’t mobile.

Limits are a lie.

Ironically, the jersey that got ripped up was from Justin Winery in Paso Robles.

Brought my dad out of his assisted living facility for a and to watch some . He’s essentially the only one in the facility that gets out to the bar, which is the place he feels most ”normal.” He was on two years ago so we said fuck it and started bringing him out here, and well, we’re still going. He’s a mini celebrity here, especially among the bartenders and regulars.

@GPJohnston @rscottjones Strange the way our bodies work.

Back in the day I hated hoppy beers. Now I can’t abide a beer without enough hops. They even help settle my stomach when it’s grumpy.

Marijuana smoke, otoh, used to smell great. Now it stuffs up my nose something fierce. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Dunno about where you are, but around here GrubHub and all the other delivery services add 25% (yes you read that right, twenty five percent) to every menu item.

AND they have the balls to add “fees” on top of that, which they claim goes to “improving their service.“

Even the “order for pickup with no fees” app Postmates added 25% to Thai food last week. For the “convenience” of not calling the restaurant directly.

Bastards. Greedy bastards.

Paper receipt from the drive-thru for the same meal from the same restaurant. Total $14.21

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

@nosaj I believe this is exactly correct.

Direct from Grubhub's website: The lowest tier is 15% commission which includes a 10% delivery fee. The top or Premium tier is 25%. Restaurants just list the items at a 25% markup, so they can still stay in business. Giving away 30% of your profit leaves a negative margin, I would think.

I also wonder whether the restaurant in question actually pays for Premium or is just double-dipping.

Either way, it is the consumer getting screwed and Grubhub making Apple-marketplace commissions for every order.

Visited my endodontics office for my root canal. As I was settling into the chair, the doc asked the assistant to put on the Johnny Cash playlist.

I asked what that was, and he said “We had Pandora create a station based on his cover of ’Hurt’”

Would YOU stay after that response?

Stella is not a fan of f-bombs.

No matter what prompts one - emails, meetings, editing text on an iPhone, even sitting here watching Andor and commenting on some plot point to no one in particular - she gets nervous.

I’ve had dogs who understand a surprising amount of English. She simply has a trigger word.

Here's a stupid password page for you.

From Verizon Wireless.

Somehow ANY password fails the "Hard to guess" test, and it will not allow the password to be changed.

nrohluap,
@nrohluap@ioc.exchange avatar

An update:

The replacement password cannot be longer than 18 characters.

It will say strength is "Medium" even for an 18-character random string of upper/lower/digits

It only changed to "Strong" when I deleted a character and put a symbol in its place.

But it doesn't take just ANY special character. It goes back to "Fails hard to guess" if the character isn't supported.
