When he built a bridge to connect Bluesky to Mastodon and other ActivityPub-powered platforms, @snarfed.org@snarfed.org started a new chapter for the fediverse. The software engineer opens up to @mike about his rollercoaster ride in the latest episode of Dot Social:
In order for the open social web to happen at scale, lots of companies and apps, big and small, need to adopt #ActivityPub. Threads is the largest player so far to do this and the implications are huge.
Why is #Threads doing this? Is federation just another feature or is it foundational to their entire experience? How is the Threads team thinking about moderation, monetization and privacy in these early days and going forward?
I asked @rklambo and @pcottle, two thoughtful and genuine leaders on the Threads team who joined me on the latest episode of #DotSocial. Check it out on our #PeerTube instance or wherever you get your podcasts.
Looks like the New Interface for #MastodonSocial#DotSocial doesn't run in #IceCat on my (now-fixed after nearly 3 months) PC! The error is Uncaught TypeError: Object.hasOwn is not a function, which is presumably because IceCat doesn't use the latest JS (it's something like a couple of years behind FF), but that shouldn't be a reason to break on it! I hope this new interface isn't rolled out to here too! #MastoDev@Gargron
Hear me out, #ActivityPub enabled games. If you developed a game, and are looking to add a social network experience to it, ping me, would be a fun project to work on.
FediForum 2024 is almost here! Flipboard CEO @mike catches up with conference co-organizer and Dazzle Labs CEO @J12t to get a taste of top-of-mind topics for fediverse stewards, including how this space can cross the chasm into the mainstream. It’s a new episode of Dot Social, the first podcast about the open social web.
I am at the point where everything seems to work except for confirming the follow/unfollow request. It is something about the signature.
These past few hours of development remind me of what @coachtony says in the last episode of #dotsocial by @mike, there is not a nice way to test your #activitypub implementations.
Different #mastodon versions, return different errors, there is no test suite, and basically I am testing in production and/or setting up my own #mastodon server.
Flipboard CEO @mike interviewed leaders at the forefront of the open social web movement for the Dot Social podcast. Here's how to follow everyone he spoke to.
The Fediverse gives @coachtony “early internet vibes.” The Medium CEO joins Flipboard CEO @mike to discuss what’s wrong with the attention economy, why human curation still matters, and how decentralized social media is enabling entrepreneurs to “rethink everything.”
Remember to share positive posts, memes, etc. about open source things you use and like. A simple “I like this” or “thanks for working on this” can go a long way!
Happy people carry on using things quietly while negativity gets shared, memed, and shoved in front of folks who work on your favorite projects. One negative comment too often outweighs ten positive ones, because human brains are dumb.
@cassidy A fair point. I've been posting about podcasts lately (including nice ones from @wedistribute and #DotSocial about the social web) but haven't recently mentioned the player I use: @AntennaPod . This is a great way to listen to podcasts on Android: stays out of the way and downloads and plays podcasts. Playback works great when offline.
@tchambers, author of the Twitter Migration report and admin of indieweb.social, is an internet steward everyone should know. In this podcast with @mike, Tim expounds on social media’s thorniest issues and explains how the Fediverse offers a better social home than anything we've had before.
Mastodon founder and CEO @Gargron leads a "hero’s journey’" to create a better social media experience for us all. But how will Threads entering the Fediverse change the landscape? @mike ignites a sprawling conversation that looks back on Mastodon’s epic year, dissects the moment we’re in today, and ponders a future filled with big changes and new ideas.

The internet as we know it is now over 30 years old, and author John Battelle says we must get over the "extraordinary inertia" of the system we’ve built. How do we create a better internet? Federation may be the answer. Listen in as Flipboard CEO @mike catches up with the WIRED co-founder, journalist and entrepreneur.
