Hey there. I'm a 23 year old man who loves music, talking to people either online or in person, and playing video games. I'm currently a college student and am in fact part of a set of triplets who're also blind. I hope to have fun here.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 oh cool! Is that yourself?

rooktallon, to ableton

So I like #Ableton. It's a good daw. But also pretty confusing. I wish I had a #Keyboard I could use to make music on but them keyboards are far from cheap. Very far from it and no mistake. #Music is one of those hobbies that it's a very high cost to start.

The applause company reversed there decision on a subscription for vdr. Yet another example of blind entitlement and arm-twisting winning the day instead of reasonable discussion on people paying fairly for a good product. Leave it to the entitled to never want to gain without losing something in return.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @gocu54 @LeonianUniverse I'm an Android user so I shouldn't give a shit about this. But I do anyway. VDR is a good app. FOr those who can support their development and happily pay, then pay for the subscription and support their development. I don't want to see VDR go out the window. I know at least one sighted professor who uses VDR to check the accessibility of the PDF's which they give to students at George Mason University. It's a good app. I just think the requirement rather than the option to subscribe rubbed people the wrong way and the way they handled it in the PR.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @gocu54 @LeonianUniverse I mean heck, I would happily pay for an android version of VDR if they decided to develop a subscription-based thing for it at the start. WHo knows? We could get some exclusive features because those Apple Blindies don't wanna pay to use their own app.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @gocu54 @LeonianUniverse Oh shit really? How much is it and what's it called? DO you get the voices too?

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @bryansmart @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 Do you get all the same features as VDR or are we excluded for some features as usual because Apple is paying to get everything while we as Android userws get scraps?

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 @LeonianUniverse @gocu54 Does it have Bookshare access? PDF reader? And all of the other features Apple gets with VDR? If I'm going to pay for this, I want everything VDR has with no exclusions. Android users shouldn't be left out simply because we're not willing or are unable to get an Apple device.

Not gonna lie, I think Chroma is a pretty neat plugin.

rooktallon,

@talon Which software did you use to make this?

rooktallon,

@talon Is that a new DAW, then that I've never heard of?

rooktallon,

@talon So did you use Reaper or are you a Mac user?

rooktallon,

@talon Neat. Keep forgetting Reaper isn't just for Windows.

rooktallon,

@talon Really cool reverb effect and use of samples.

Voice Dream's upcoming changes are violating Apple's App Review guidelines, specifically guideline 3.1.2(a). If this concerns you and you don't want these changes to actually be made, I suggest doing the following:

  1. If you have friends at Apple, particularly in Corporate, ask them to find somebody to report the violation to, probably at the App Review or accessibility teams.

  2. send an email to Apple and tell them that this is happening. Be professional and not angry, use a corporate email address if you can, name.surname@provider if you cannot. Have a signature with your postal address and phone number, look like a professional, not a "random blindie". Mention that they're taking away features from users who already paid and mention the specific guideline number. You should also emphasize how important the app is to you and to the disability community in general. Bring their attention to the fact that the app has an Apple design award and is featured in App Store collections. Tell them why built-in iOS features aren't enough and how the app changes your life. Send the email to accessibility@apple.com, abuse@apple.com, abuse@icloud.com and tcook@apple.com. Those are not the right people to handle this, but the people manning[*] these email addresses are very likely to have far more agency than ordinary customer support representatives, and there's no way to contact the relevant people directly. If we cause enough of a ruckus, somebody is going to notice and get the message across to the right department, and you don't just ignore messages from the office of the CEO, even if they don't actually come from the CEO directly.

Edit: I originally mistyped the guideline number.
To be continued.

rooktallon,

@miki Lol, all this because $60 a year is a little too much for the pocketbook. Like I get it but having VDR is a hell of a lot better for most blind people than having something as inferior as Easyreader. Android user btw, I shouldn't give a shit about any of this.

rooktallon,

@miki You're not going to get it for free though. More than likely, they'll just yank it off the appstore and no one will have the app that best suits them because there're people who want to stick it to the man for no particular reason.

Installing NetBSD on AArch64 looks like its a giant pain, especially since they don't seem to have UEFI compatible CDs.

I'm going to have to do this on x86, aren't I :/

rooktallon,

@ncommander Yeah but I'd love to listen to it happen. I always loved your 6-hour streams. ALways so informative if you listened to it rather than sleeping due to the soothing sound of a floppy drive.

I'll disclaimer this with the fact that I don't have a lot of information about this beyond what is covered on the Blazie website, and I don't want to start a flame war against what seems to be a very interesting product from a company I and many others respect.
I'm very confused on why the BTSpeak and BTSpeak pro are seemingly running on the exact same hardware--a Raspberry Pi compute module--but the pro is $400 more expensive. As far as I can tell, the pro allows access to the Linux desktop environment with Orca running. Blazie didn't make that. They probably did some work to make their Braille keyboard work properly with Orca and made some modifications to the OS, but in general, a Linux desktop is a Linux desktop is a Linux desktop.
What did they did make are the simple applications that ship with both units. Whether you pay $1200 for the BTSpeak pro or $800 for the non-pro, you still get the built-in applications. The website says that includes "an editor, music and media player, music streaming, instructional learning, a text-based web browser, calculator, calendar, clock, and more".
What you seemingly do not get on the non-pro model is the ability to exit out of Blazie's shell and enter the Linux desktop environment. And if there is nothing hardware-side preventing a non-pro user from doing that, I'm bothered by what seems to be another locked down OS.
Does anyone have more insider information on what kind of hardware changes or other justifications exist for charging $400 more to--essentially--use my device as an actual computer? Is it purely a software lock or are there actually hardware differences that are not noted on the FAQ page? Were the adaptations made to Orca far more significant than one might suspect, resulting in the need to charge $400 just for the ability to use this customized version of Linux?

@simon It's called business. People like making money. I'd do the same and I'd say to my customers, no regrets. Get with the program.

For those that wonder what I think about Ableton Live, I've been posting tracks I've made with it for a while. The hamster dance, the one that just says hey <3, wubwub.wav, and the D&B were Ableton Live.
And here's my very first Ableton Live project. Made that on the day I got access to the beta.

As for what I think, I like it. There's still quite a lot to improve, for example no automation accessibility being the big one for me, weird focus issues with third party plugins, but I like the workflow so I'm quite optimistic and hopeful.

rooktallon, (edited )

@talon What I want to know is how does it all work? I mean I'm doing the 30-day trial because ain't no one except for the serious producers forkin out $500 for this unless they know they can actually make something out of it. Also, why is everything I've heard made in Ableton thus far so dry as in no reverb? I liked your tune though so I'm not criticizing your material but it's just something I noticed.

Talk about rescuing your bookshare account at literally the last minute. I received the money from a relative, then transferred it to the bank account. I had memorized the card details for, only to find out bookshare doesn't take discover cards, so I had to send it back and pray like crazy that it got here on time

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 What is it, like $50 a year?

If anybody tried selling girl scout cookies here, our equivalent of the FDA would put them behind bars so fast.

There's definitely precedent for them going after small fry, there was a pretty famous incident of a priest who tried selling some famous pastries that the Polish Pope liked, and he was quickly shut down, although I'm not sure if there were any legal consequences.

You need an insane amount of paperwork to be allowed to do something like this, and knowing our government, I'd be surprised if they would issue the appropriate permits to anybody below the age of 18.

rooktallon,

@miki Yeah, but what yu don't know is that Girl Scout cookies aren't made by actual Girl Scouts. They're not homemade cookies. They're individually packaged sleeves of cookies made by a company and sold by the Girls themselves and now online apparently.

How is Reaper the only accessible DAW that decently makes automation accessible? I don't get it.

rooktallon,

@talon Are you planning on trying Ableton?

rooktallon,

@talon Any publicly posted recordings on how all of that works? Becausei'm thinking many blind people would like to know just how accessible it all is.

Lemon meringue is possibly the ultimate pie. Hard to resist.

@ottaross COngratulations. See, I'd love baking if it weren't so damn sticky. Like I don't know if its just me but I hate when stuff sticks to my skin. It's why I hate maple syrup.

A question for anyone who ever purchased any of my handmade works or is interested in any and didn't pick them up yet: What do you think about a jewellery subscription???
That would mean, subscribing on Patreon for maybe £20 a month and getting a free handmade item sent to you (of your choice). That would also be free delivery and no Etsy fees
That would also give you access to the blog and BTS content and a free patch and letter. Interested?
This option is now available:
https://www.patreon.com/join/Skaly

rooktallon,

@skaly I mean I'd definitely consider it and I can see why you're considering a service like that. Making steady money from customers is a great way to generate revenue. But I'm like I'd feel really bad knowing you made all this stuff and you'd have to supply like who knows how many people 1 thing per month and that's a whole lot of work for 1 person. I feel like that'd quickly tire you out.

rooktallon,

@skaly I'm just imagine hours of carefully placing every individual bead on a very thin string and I'm like hell no, I could not do this myself.
