Hey there. I'm a 23 year old man who loves music, talking to people either online or in person, and playing video games. I'm currently a college student and am in fact part of a set of triplets who're also blind. I hope to have fun here.

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

rooktallon,

@TechConnectify @gocu54 I wish someone would cover the history of screen reading technology. As of yet, no one has tackled the topic and I wish there was a definitive guide on what was used in the 1980s and 90s. You would've thought blind people would've covered it but no one has even given the video an attempt at all that I can find.

rooktallon,

@TechConnectify Cool thing is I pay for Premium so no ads for me. Does that effect creators negatively in any way? Like, premium subscribers don't make you money because no ads?

rooktallon,

@TechConnectify Well that's absolutely awesome because I enjoy long-form content. The longer the better for me. Kinda why I got into your channel because I loved being talked to for long periods of time. Also, is it weird if I tell you I've slept at night to a playlist of your content?

rooktallon,

@TechConnectify I particularly liked your video on coffee machines/percalators. Pretty cool to hear about what they do. Also, the titles of your videos are always funny in a nerdy type way which is the best type of humor for me.

I had a pretty good social experience on Runescape, enough so that I felt to write it up and post it on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/17j00nx/the_social_aspect_of_this_game_really_is/

rooktallon,

@ncommander I would love to play Rune Scape. But I'm totally blind. I'm sure the community is there though certainly and such. Blind people can already play World of Warcraft classic and we're in the stages of making mods for retail that allow us to play as well. Nothing for Runescape sadly unfortunately. I remember as a kid watching my sighted older brother play Runescape for hours.

OK, I do not want Mr. phone over here waking up every time I pick it up. Can I do something about that?

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 yes, you can. If you're using an android, go to display settings and check that.

rooktallon,

@evilcookies98 What phone do you have? I am probably gonna get the Pixil 8 pro once I get my 7a back to me so I can return it.

Well I decided to start today with making some oatmeal cookies. Had everything except the raisins.

I've been struggling a lot with things like identity, places in the world, and more. No idea what comes next ...

rooktallon,

@ncommander Otameal cookies don't necessarily require rasins.

Woke up to a video denying the massacre sent by a past friend and collaborator. Holocaust denial level shit. I can't do this anymore. I feel like my whole life in the UK is a lie. I shouldn't have trusted anyone who called themselves a friend. They don't listen from a place of learning they don't respect the fact I live through it. I'm heart broken. I experienced more anti sematic behaviours in the past two weeks than in my entire life. I'm scared to exist anywhere.

rooktallon,

@skaly I don't really understand why people are so up in arms about the Jewish religion. It's just a religion like any other religion but you guys just tend to get the really, really shitty end of the stick in a lot of cases for simply following a religion? I'm not even religious but I once was and Mormon at that and I din't get nearly as much hate for following Mormonism than the Jews are getting for simply being Jewish.

rooktallon,

@skaly So Jews are a race as well as a religion? YOu learn something new every day. The only thing I know is that they don't eat pork or something and I could be completely wrong about that. Still doesn't excuse anti-semetic people out there hating other for their birth/choices.

rooktallon,

@amaditalks @skaly Oh seriously? So you mean the rules you all follow aren't really even rules in the traditional religious sense where if you don't follow them, you burn in hell type stuff? It's more like guidelines that you can follow at your disgression? Seems pretty nice. Also, cool that there's a whole cultural side to the whole thing.

Look after bees.

Post from a local Beekeeper 🐝
“Its late, and maybe in the morning I'll delete this post, but I've just got home and for now I need to write this down.
Earlier this evening I received a message from a home owner to say they had a swarm of bees in their hedge, but they were worried about them because children had been throwing water at them.
By the time my fellow beekeeper and I arrived, what had been a beautiful prime swarm was reduced to a few hundred drenched bees, huddling limply around their queen.
I've already deleted the photos of the puddles of water, the dripping wet hedge, and the many, many dead and dying bees that hadn't been able to escape the attack; sharing those pictures serves no purpose.
We gently placed the bees that had survived into a collection box, and hopefully tomorrow, when they've had chance to dry out and settle, we'll check on them and if necessary feed them; they'll be exhausted and possibly (understandably) defensive. They've been through a lot.
Please, please, help me to educate your children, your grandchildren, your neices and nephews, your neighbours, your colleagues and your friends that a swarm of bees isn't dangerous - they're amazing creatures that are just looking for a new home.
Please don't let anyone harm them. Just call a beekeeper who will gladly rehome them.
Please help me to spread this message and hopefully save any more bees from being unnecessarily harmed” 😢

  • A Sad and unhappy Beekeeper
rooktallon,

@Wolfie_Rankin So genuine question, do you bee keepers just not even feel the pain of getting stung anymore because of the no doubt millions of beestings you've been through for who knows how long of professional beekeeping? Because that's definitely kind of amazing. Also, yeah, bees are nice creatures. I had an experience with carpenter bees that really change my outlook on bugs and bees in general.

So far, The Last of Us is a dumb game. Yay accessibility features, but the timed stages remind me, in the worst way, of old games where the entire point was to do a few specific things, in a super short time, or the task just restarts and restarts. Chasing Robert inside the house is that. He is running from you. You have 10 seconds to catch him, or restart, 10 seconds, restart, 10 seconds, restart. No freedom. If I could go back a week, I wouldn't buy.

rooktallon,

@bryansmart THat's fair to some extent.

Hoooly 🥞 I had not expected them to have this much success just grafting metal into bones. The bone actually grew around it, does not seem infected, and the bone mount is actually so strong the bionic hand can just be attached to it. Look at these x-rays, this is like right out of a movie, if we can replicate this to other people it's going to change prosthetics/augmentation forever.

rooktallon,

@anthropy Now obviously I wouldn't like the trauma of losing your hand. But esthetically speaking, give me a silver-colored shiny metal hand that glints in the sunlight and moonlight. That'd look cool.

Having a lot of fun with Forza Motorsport right now and that once again made me realize that there are people out there who actually care. I'm pretty sure none of this was actually necessary to do, but whether it was PR or employees that actually care or both, the fact is that even while it's not perfect, this is a huge, huge step in blind gaming. This is incredibly fun, even if it's ridiculously difficult and has a very steep learning curve. I'm not actually sure when I felt like this for the last time. I've played the last of us but somehow I feel like this is even bigger. I imagine that implementing blind accessibility into the last of us was less work than getting a fast paced racing game playable, but I'm also sure that one might not have happened without the other. And I'm pretty sure that this wasn't some kind of business incentive either. I can't imagine that adding blind assist features to Forza would be the thing that made or broke the games sales, and I can't imagine that outside of a pretty niche player base, anyone would care if Forza did have these features or not. But it does. And I'm very grateful for it. This is actually incredible. Very, very difficult and hard, but incredible. I wouldn't fault anybody for getting frustrated and giving up - hell I got frustrated too. But then I close the game, step away for a few hours, and find myself opening it again and trying again. The amount of settings you can tweak to get the most out of the accessibility features that are there is actually quite surprising and by all the gods I want this trend to continue. I can even play fucking multiplayer with other people! Sighted friends if I wanted! How friggin' cool is that shit?
So yeah. Are there things that could be improved? Of course. When isn't there? There's always room for improvement. But considering where we came from, basically a game where you held and released one button with the previous Forza, to this? This is amazing. I can only imagine what they could do if this accessibility mindset continued. And I really hope it does. And not just for racing games. For all games. Sorry now I'm seriously just rambling.

rooktallon,

@talon I'm looking to spend upwards of $500 on a wheel potentially just for this game. It would make things so much better on my end because I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of feedback just because the controller doesn't provide very much. If Microsoft took more risks, I wouldn't have to spend as much as I'm willing because they'd have a force feedback controller like Playstation does.

rooktallon,

@talon Please let me know. I'm wondering how it would work and if its any easier.

Do you consider yourself a nerd? (Definition: a person who is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a particular subject, especially one of specialist or niche interest)

In this context I’m talking about the word in its positive meaning, it can be tech, board games, movies, etc. It’s usually if you are a problem solver, a thinker, a techie.

They say Mastodon is a niche platform for nerds so I just want to see the numbers. Don’t let this influence your decision. If you think you’re even a slightest bit nerdy, it’s a yes. Otherwise no. Boosts appreciated.

rooktallon,

@rolle If you call DCI (Drum corps International) a Niche interest, then I'm totally a nerd.

Currently metaphorically banging my head against the wall. Following the PMDG737 guide but a lot of the things are p3d specific. For example, it sets the IRS position in p3d but it doesn't in fs2020 if you use First officer pro, using First officer next for fs2020. So following the guide seems to be a thing I'm not really understanding because like I said, a lot of the stuff is spicific to one program when I'm using an entirely different one to fly. There's no updated documentation I know about for 2020 in text form, only video which I have trouble following. Any ideas?

I've been walking more recently. I'm starting to pick up the art of just walking for the sake of it (my path is literially around the block), but I did over an hour 20 minutes ago. Cooking some ramen now.

Life with Non-24 involves finding solutions to problems no one else has.

rooktallon,

@ncommander How the hell do you have non-24 when you're not blind? It sucks. I'm totally blind and also have the same thing.

If you’re doing US-based events for women in tech, especially if your events are NB and trans-inclusive, you need to be paying a whole lot more attention to security than most events do. Get some paranoid infosec women and a real physical security presence. Safety planning right now should make everyone sweat. And don’t do events in states where your attendees are exposed to legal and medical harm. 🤦🏻

ETA: This went wide enough that I’m into the long tail of bad replies, muting now. <3

rooktallon,

@kissane Yeah, probably not a good idea to do these events in Alabama for example. And for god's sake, don't do it in florida.

I like to give credit where it's due. Several months ago, I found the accessibility line for AT&T and called them to let them know that their prepaid activation page has an inaccessible CAPTCHA on it. They seemed like they cared. I don't know how quickly it was addressed, but I can confirm that the CAPTCHA is no longer there. They have ESim support, and some decent plans too, particularly the $300 yearly plan which includes 16GB rollover data and roaming to Canada and Mexico. https://att.com/prepaid/activate

rooktallon,

@simon For $300 a year, it better come with a choice of new phone.
