AI = a massive spike in energy consumption and carbon emissions for the production of what is the intellectual equivalent of mechanically reclaimed meat, and yet it will be pursued by capitalists seeking to position themselves as a very small door with stiff hinges that is the only gateway to knowledge. It is nothing but a damaging power play dressed up as a benign service. 🐂💩
What states and the EU ought to do - facilitate cross border travel in a green way - they’re abjectly failing to do (see today’s SNCF (state owned railway) saga)
What they’re instead doing is racist passenger profiling and eroding #Schengen (Bundespolizei controlling anyone with dark skin at Offenburg)
"When people are treated unfairly, for example, when they are not allowed to have input into decisions that will affect them, or when they are not given good explanations of why certain decisions were made, the symbolic message may be that the organization does not think highly enough of them (to provide input or to be given good explanations)."
@grimalkina what are your thoughts on motivation model from Daniel Pinks Drive? it lists autonomy as one of the three pillars of intrisict motivation. mastery and purpose being the other two. autonomy is defined as ability to have input what on and how you work
> The EDPS pilot project of EU Voice and EU Video has proved that public bodies, like EUIs, can offer social media platforms that respect individuals’ fundamental rights
> Unfortunately, despite our efforts to find a new home for EU Voice and EU Video in other EUIs, we have been unable to secure new ownership to maintain the servers and sustain operations at the high standards that EUIs and our users deserve

I don't know if this is just the people I follow (network effects of course) but it feels so so so interesting to me that there is this kind of everyone reading the same small set of books in software commentary and like, sort of vaguely systems-and-social software people. Like don't get me wrong I like some of the books but it's weird how specific they are. I mean who starts it? Who are the bellwethers out here like hey read THIS particular sociology text
Mniejsze koszty inwestycji to szybszy jej zwrot i czysty zysk. A skąd to wiem?
This means that I won't attend, speak at, or promote conferences that do not have a robust #PublicHealthPolicy .
It's a hard line for me. Because if you cannot enforce public health measures, I have absolutely no faith that you will enforce your Codes of Conduct, to protect folks from harassment.
If you consider yourself an inclusive conference with a diverse community and you don't have a public health policy. You aren't as inclusive as you think you are.
HANNAH DAVIS: No. That is a narrative that has been perpetuated, I think, in order to help communicate that the pandemic is over when it’s not. The CDC and census have a Household Pulse Survey that actually just released new data, and showed that the rates of long COVID in the U.S. adult population have actually jumped tremendously since the last time they counted."
My discipline, anthropology, is not seen as a “growth" discipline, and departments are being closed down. But the world needs Anthropology and Anthropologists now more than ever!
Here are my 8 reasons for this:
POSSIBILITIES
At a time of polycrisis, when the destructive fallouts of capitalist modernity are ever more apparent, anthropology highlights that there are myriad alternative ways of thinking and living; that there is so much to learn from other peoples in the world. 1/n
Following hard on the heels of Police State Stage One on Friday, the Telegraph goes full Gilead.
This headline appeared on Friday, a week after someone called Sean Rayment called having female frontline soldiers "a failure in political correctness".
And yet they've been banging on about conscription for weeks.
I've asked this before, but got no good explanation. Why is it that Mastodon "trending news" links aren't connected to any of the toots about those links, nor can you typically even find those toots (by searching for the link, for example), even on a server with full text indexing, regardless of the posters' discoverability settings?
That makes it practically impossible to participate in a conversation about those trending links, ie is the antithesis of social.
@osma@ErickaSimone Not exactly the feature you’re asking for but Sora is a mastodon/bluesky/misskey client that is much better at discoverability than all the other clients. Lets to see trending posts, suggests accounts to follow, etc The author is open to new ideas, I’m pretty sure he’d consider see posts on the trending topic feature. Currently apple ecosystem only …
@hazelweakly@tuban_muzuru Were you always able to hold so much in your head? Has anything helped increase it?
In my case this amount is small and decreasing... I need big screen to constantly look at the context of what I'm doing otherwise I don't keep it in my head ...
I like doing economic analysis of #sciencefiction work (man needs a hobby, I guess). Looking for advice: what do I read next? Preference for recent work depicting #solarpunk economic systems.
Listen y'all. I am SO GOOD at getting scientists to speak to industry audiences but if we keep titling everything like "WELCOME TO PYTHON DEATHCAMP UBERGIT MERGEFEST XX35!!!!" no one outside of software engineering is able to look past that and see a lovely list of topics like "inclusive hiring practices!" and "mental health!"
Like, I am constantly trying to get my scientist pals to come speak to you! To events I've gone to where I KNOW it would be a match! They are not convinced!!
