For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@GossiTheDog I never doubted for a second that it was actually being done on the NPU.

What I'll never believe is that they'll not be using that stuff to monetize their users. More banners spammed to users, more value for shareholders.

It worths remembering Microsoft's main strategy: Embrace, Extend, Extinguish
This time the target is humans, because fewer humans to pay, more value for the shareholder.

Sometimes when you learn how something works, you think, Thanks knowledge, that really helped, everything makes more sense, and other times you look up how wrists turn, and it's like WTF?!

unlucio,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@mentallyalex @RickiTarr perhaps because we weren't designed? 😂

evolution is just a process, it doesn't have agency, it doesn't have a goal.

ai has entered its roast era. large scale mockery signals the beginning of the end. good. 🙂

unlucio,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@zdl @ElleGray Man you really need to separate the marketing/business narrative from the tech itself.

unlucio,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@zdl @ElleGray

I don't think the quality of the technology is the topic of that billboard.

Imho the tech itself is pretty interesting right now, just not ready for prime time yet. It's important to separate what's real tech from the marketing, media, and business narrative.

As humans on the other hand it's also important not to lose sight of these things and stay on top of them because what the last 20 years have shown us is: you either control the tech, or the tech controls you.

unlucio,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@ElleGray Once again humans show pretty well how shortsighted we are:

"AI" is not gonna take jobs, entrepreneurs are gonna choose machines over humans because they're cheaper.

We need to fix the horrible culture of systematically dehumanizing and cheapening humans until they're squeezed for all they can produce and paid as little as possible so they can keep being squeezed.

The problem is not technology, the problem is that our current model raises greedy psychotic bastards to the top.

unlucio,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@zdl @ElleGray Yeah you know why: the problem cannot be the technology, because it's an inert object.

Social problems derive from humans.
it's how you use and regulate a tool that shapes its presence in society, not the tool as well.

Again: you need to separate the actual tech from the narrative.

Serious question: why is it that so many people apparently have real problems adopting ISO 8601 dates and UTC, in a professional context?

As in, are those somehow fundamentally incompatible with human nature? Or do people just completely lack the cultural awareness to understand that some of their colleagues are used to a different date format than they are, or live in a different timezone, or don't use daylight saving time?

@xahteiwi the USA are still using medieval units and they throw a tantrum if you only slightly suggest that they might want to align them selfs with the 99% of the planet.
It doesn't surprise me they're doing the same with dates 🤷‍♂️

This is such a strange thing to say about Star Wars but whenever I see a trailer for anything in the franchise, as soon as a lightsaber ignites I'm just immediately done with it.

Surely the least interesting thing about the Star Wars universe is that there are people in it who carry swords made of lasers. I don't know if the prequels ruined lightsabers for me or if it's the fact they the only people who wield them are part of rigid religious sects with strict rules making them boring.

unlucio,

That's all that they care about, it's called capitalism 🤷‍♂️

One of the weirdest things from doing A City on Mars is the people who do some version of "actually it'll be cheap" and then explain that you could get a huge Mars base for just, like, 1% of Earth's GDP. Or, if you took everyone's budget for entertainment and put it into space, you could do amazing stuff.

unlucio,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith But if you have resources and technologies to transform Mars into a Mini Earth: could we just use those resources and technologies to fix Earth?
Think about what we could accomplish using the budget of pointless resource wasting things things like: fashion, luxury stuff, the military

But really: what's the point of a city on Mars? What kind of problem does it solve (besides Musk's ludicrous claims?)

Gina Rhinehart, Australia's richest woman, has been trying to use her power and influence to remove a painting of her from the National Gallery.

She has even got swimmers that her company sponsors to write letters to have it taken down.

Renowned Aboriginal artist Vincent Namatjira is famous for a caricature style which challenges power structures, and he says his Australia in Colour series is no different.

Ordinary Australians are not having a bar of this. They have raised 30% of the money raised to put the painting on a massive billboard in Times Square for the world to see.

Want to help stick it to the multi billionare? The link is:

How do you think the switch from passive to active TV consumption has affected the medium? I wonder if it helps explain the rise of infinite sequels and catering to fandoms?

@ZachWeinersmith I see what you meant.

Yet to me, they look only more trackable and profitable, but the ECG still looks flat 😆

unlucio,

@ZachWeinersmith defined "active TV consumption", because when I see people sitting in front of the TV, they still seem pretty inactive to me.

@Daojoan might be because the whole economic system is more of a rigged lottery rather than something that makes sense?

It's interesting how people are reacting to the OpenAI and Gemini demos on a purely technical achievement level without realizing it.

The audience ooh'd and aah'd when Gemini identified the speaker on the table when asked "what makes sound?"

Indeed, that's very impressive as a technical accomplishment. It's amazing for an AI.

The problem is that Google immediately took the leap to "this will help you in your day-to-day life!" & put it on all our phones.

Bruh I know what a speaker looks like.

unlucio,
@unlucio@mastodon.social avatar

@rodhilton indeed. LLMs more and more feel like dealing with a kid who is incredibly fast at spewing out walls of text, but most of the time the answer is gonna be extremely basic and will need careful checking.
I asked "How would you model Time as a dimension of a 4-dimensions object in a 5-dimensions space" to chatGPT and it took me 12 interactions to get close to the answer I was looking for.
It was just walls of text until I asked: MATH PLEASE
and again, close but fundamentally wrong.
