Sometimes, I watch people fetishizing a brand, and really wonder if we should be teaching some kind of class on how to be a thoughtful person with hobbies. Making the kinds of things you buy a big part of your personality feels so sad to me. It feels like a very poor substitute for actual human development.

@RickiTarr when I ask children in my classes about what they do in their spare time (no one seems to recognise hobbies as something to have or pursue) I get answers like play games (computer, smartphone, Switch) or watch YouTube. TV has lost much of its appeal. It’s remarkable and a rarity to learn that people collect or make anything at all.
