I love love love this ultra light thermal pullover especially how it’s sort of translucent so you can see my “save the ant” tee through it. Some guy makes these in etsy and I might need to get another! It has light blue contrasting plastic snaps and pairs perfectly with my purple burberry scarf! To me? this is peak fashion THE look for “fall into winter casuals.”

ETA: the fabric is called "alpha direct" the store where I got it is now closed for now

I just want to show people there is fashion on Mastodon.

I may not be the best person to do this but until we get real fashion bloggers you will have me. I'm doing my best.

@thepoliticalcat

I'm a little obsessed with "clothing technology" and get really excited about high tech fabrics.

I'm still waiting for "clothing in a can" that you can spray on, peel off and then have a perfectly fitting garment that lasts for years... but whenever I explain the idea people narrow their eyes in that "that is weird" expression I always have to keep an eye out for when I'm excited and talking.

@futurebird @thepoliticalcat The Japanese had spray on pantyhose. I know that's not the same thing.

@futurebird @thepoliticalcat I wish there was technology to make shoes that fitted the exact size and shape of your feet.

It feels like it should be doable. I know some people have 3d printed their own shoes, but they don't exactly look comfortable or good for walking in.

Also the bed of my 3d printer is not big enough to print shoes in my size.

@planettimmy @futurebird @thepoliticalcat

Manufacturers could at least offer shoes made on combination lasts; narrow heal and wide toe box. I mean, at least make some shoes that are shaped like feet.

@moondog548 @futurebird @thepoliticalcat Are those brands of 3d printed shoes? A quick search didn't show up anything.

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@planettimmy @moondog548 @thepoliticalcat

Tim, I have very short but wide feet and also have a hard time finding shoes that fit. And I've done a lot of research into it. I have good news and bad news. First 3D printing won't work, can't produce a durable enough material for a shoe that isn't also too stiff.

There are some shops on etsy that will make shoes, I have these, and they are a perfect fit, but I don't think they are attractive enough.

@planettimmy @moondog548 @thepoliticalcat

If you need shoes with good support the etsy shoes won't work either, they are "barefoot shoes" so very thin sole, which I like, but it isn't for everyone.

The next option is to go to a proper cobbler. It's going to cost you. $300 to $600 but the shoes will last for years and will be repairable at any local shoe fixing shop for about $30.

Since 90% of people can wear off the rack shoes those who can't have few options. 2/2

CStamp,
@CStamp@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird @planettimmy @moondog548 @thepoliticalcat Good shoe stores will measure your feet, not put you into shoes that almost fit and tell you the shoes will stretch to fit. It used to be a more common thing to size your feet, but you can still find it if you're in an area with a good selection of shoe stores. Good shoes will cost more, but will last longer, be comfortable, and you can have them repaired, you can save by buying sales. A good cobbler is also a solution, as mentioned.

planettimmy,
@planettimmy@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@futurebird @moondog548 @thepoliticalcat So turns out it is possible to 3d print shoe soles, if you're Addidas and can afford to hire a whole materials science company:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmpK6cYUXu0

Not sure that's going to work for printing anything on my little bedslinger though.

That technology exists, it's called a "shoemaker". The people you know called Shoemaker or Schumacher descend from one.

With modern technology we can produce shoes with much less work, and so most of us find handcrafted personalized shoes too expensive. Of course, not everyone could afford them back in the day either, they used clogs, went barefoot or wore hand-me-downs.

It's an example of the Baumol Effect.

Neat... this didn't go where I was expecting though...

"That technology exists, it's called a "shoemaker". The people you know called Shoemaker or Schumacher descend from one.

With modern technology...."

I thought what would come next would be a way to reactivate the desire to make shoes in such people and then get them to make shoes for you...

marytzu,
@marytzu@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird @notsoloud @planettimmy @thepoliticalcat ai powered shoemaker robots perhaps?

I think the tech already exists it's just about safety + getting the costs to come down. As it currently stands ai powered robotics is a toy for the rich.

Rivikah,
@Rivikah@mstdn.social avatar

@marytzu @futurebird @notsoloud @planettimmy @thepoliticalcat I don't know about shoes specifically, but for most clothing the technology of "AI powered robots" does not exist. Even the most basic elements of clothing construction are skilled labor that is proving difficult to automate.

planettimmy,
@planettimmy@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Rivikah @marytzu @futurebird @notsoloud @thepoliticalcat My assumption is that a customizable shoe of the kind I was thinking of (basically a sneaker) would probably have a 3d printed lower base, and have the various fabric parts cut by an automated system, with final assembly done by a human. I think this is how sneakers are currently made, except that the parts are stamped or molded in a collection of set sizes.

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@futurebird @thepoliticalcat Hmm that sounds like it would be too tight for those of us who like baggier clothes. :)

futurebird,
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

@queenofnewyork @thepoliticalcat

Maybe you could first spray on a layer of rice based dissolvable water soluble foam, contour it to the shape you want the clothes to be, then spray the clothing foam on. Let it set, hop in the shower shake it dry and go.

Same! Very vivid memories of asking dad about the cover since I thought it was the coolest idea ever (didn't pick up on the sexyness as I was a kid) and my dad being super weird and awkward about explaining why no one just wore whip cream clothing. (6 year old me thought WHY NOT??)

    It repair, be content with what we have, purchase second hand, recycling all.
    Making clithingvwith plastic bottles
    The manufacture of 1 pair of jeans from the cotton field to the ass, needs 99k liters of water.

    @futurebird @thepoliticalcat I've never been into the sprayed-on look. I still have flashbacks to the first time I ever saw someone wearing those painted-on exercise pants. Having been a sometimes long distance runner, skimpy shorts and tops are just much more comfortable, we can hope the guy was just unaware. Sweat makes fabrics do unspeakable things.

    Had a white tank that went transparent ... it didn't look like it would do that! it was thick. Turned out it only really did it to dark skin.

    Happily I had a jacket at the race. Took the jacket off, looked down... put it right back on. Stood frozen blushing for probably 20 solid min.
