This one is already really similar to reddit at least, I long for the bar at the top that shows all the communities I'm subbed too, it's definitely possible the people running this one will make changes too

Especially since the whole site is based on the free work of the mods and the users submitting content. The whole thing is like a Ponzi scam where the users and the mods are the lowest tier in the scam and reddit's admins and all the sites that get traffic through reddit are at the top.

There were so many ways reddit's owners could have gone about this and actually made money while making the userbase happy and not antagonizing their free labor.

Reddit knows they’re only losing a small portion of their users. The users that are leaving, however, are the core users. They’re the moderators that keep the subreddits clean. The longtime users that have been providing quality content for 5+ years.

I think we’re going to see a drastic change in reddits content after this. I’ve already deleted my 11y account, but I’m going to keep an eye on the site over the next couple months (via old.reddit.com, of course) and see what happens.

I hope we’ll see websites like kbin grow and thrive. I already have confidence in the developers and maintainers, and so far the user base is amazing. Even though I have to use a web app on my iPhone, which does have some bugs, I’m already committed.

I would like to say, though, PLEASE provide feedback and suggestions for kbin. Let’s make this site what Reddit should have been. Let’s make it 1000% more appealing to would-be new Reddit users. We’ve all got this.

For kbin bugs and suggestions: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues

There isn't a native mobile app, but this website is what's known as a "progressive web application". This means that you can just add it directly to your home screen and it will act app-like. See this thread for exact iOS instructions. Android is similar but does depend on which browser you're using.

    DarkThoughts,

What does "app-like" mean? On Android it just opens the mobile site in Firefox.

    noodlejetski,

if you press the "More" button and choose "Install", you'll get a shortcut on your homescreen that will open the website in a separate window.

I'm currently using DuckDuckGo browser (Chromium based if I'm not mistaken) and it works fine. My guess is that Chrome and Fennec (Firefox) will do fine.
For Android: navigate to your kbin instance and press the hamburger menu (the 3 lines or dots in your browser) and there should be a command like "install to home screen". Choose that command and a shortcut will be placed on your homwscreen and in your app drawer. Opening this shortcut will take you directly to your kbin instance.

BTW, you can use this the create shortcuts to basically every webpage. I've got shortcuts to my favorite webshops (including product filters and all)

While it's regrettable that kbin.social doesn't have any mobile apps yet, I found that the browser version on my Android works pretty well. I loved using kbin.social on my android firefox browser.

Fuck Reddit. Fuck their monopolistic practices. Fuck anyone that tries these terrorist practices.

Next up - if Discord do something similarly boneheaded, we must have a Discord alternative. I'm already regretting paying them $30 for the Nitro basic version - it basically does nothing!

    jtnichol,

$30 for nitro with all of the functionality of discord is pretty sweet in my opinion. But I agree with your point overall.

    iopq,

Why? If they do dumb shit it will be the same as Reddit, you'll have to migrate over. Just use Matrix to begin with, it's already federated and you can self-host. Promoting corporation-owned platforms is never the answer

Luckily, there are Discord alternatives that exist. A lot of them actually, I think a lot of them are open sourced. I know there's Matrix and Revolt (I quite like Revolt a lot, so I hope that goes somewhere). They do lack some things (I think screensharing being the biggest?) but they capture the essence of discord. Will they take off hard? Who knows. I'd like Revolt to a lot, it just feels nice to use.

    Hikiru,

Guilded and Revolt are my top 2 discord alternatives. Guilded is proprietary and was bought by Roblox, Revolt is open source. I haven’t fully tried Revolt but it looks promising. Guilded has many nitro features for free and extra features that discord doesn’t have. Only thing holding it back IMO is a lack of a large user base and the fact the people are so opposed to change. My friends actually laughed at me and called it a discord knockoff when I tried to get the server to move

Chat as a social platform felt like such a low bar for me. Discord itself is such a violent collection of colours and features, just an overall unenjoyable experience. It's also just ICQ, as Slack was IIRC.

I'm going to sound old and yell at the clouds right, so look away if you wish, sound but they did just monetized two communication methods that already existed, were free, but not branded for the masses.

    DarkThoughts,

Never saw the appeal of Discord. It's just a bloated chat. On top of that it is incredibly annoying. Their Linux client is hot garbage and they constantly ask for me to manually input my password again, which means I constantly have to dig into my password manager since it is a very complex one (and IIRC it had to be a complex one too). It also just annoys me that everyone and their grandmother has their own discord channel and thinks they have to advertise it every time. This just makes me want to use it even less.

Unfortunately, any that remain closed after Tuesday will just be forced back open by the admins and rebellious moderators will probably get replaced with desperate yes-men looking for an opportunity to grab some power from the forming vacuum.

The mid-to-long-term are where things are gonna get interesting. When the experienced volunteer mods are replaced with people who think the job is easier than it is. They won’t have a lot of tools necessary to actually moderate larger subreddits thanks to the API changes killing a lot of those tools, and eventually people will get tired of moderating stuff without any form of compensation and without automod tools, things will fall apart. It’s just gonna be disappointing to watch it continue on until it reaches that point. Hopefully places like Kbin, Lemmy, and Tildes continue to grow in the meantime and can get enough momentum from this to properly take off.

    DovahKing,

Then the quality of those subs will plummet drastically because the only thing they know is how to lick boots.

And when those subs start flooding with undesirable content, they'll abandon it too.

    narizpecosa,

Then, it cascades, because any mods who were previously on the fence will decide "I'm out", and then Reddit need to replace them too.

Reddit controls Reddit, they don't have to give you any timeline for being removed from the platform and taking control over the subs. According to Reddit’s chief executive Steve Huffman, it’s become too costly to keep the API access free when the platform itself is struggling to make ends meet.

Right, struggling so hard they desperately need to squeeze $20 million dollars out of one guy by the end of the month. Reddit's about to be evicted from their garage, y'all, they only made $350 million in 2021

When asked about the blackmail allegations, Huffman said: Selig's "behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally; recording and leaking a private phone call—to the point where I don’t know how we could do business with him.”

Absolutely cannot believe this bitch. Spez is everyone's abusive ex, going full DARVO in the hopes no one actually looks into any of it. "How dare Christian publicly share a legal recording of me deliberately misrepresenting that call! I simply cannot trust someone who lies all the time!"

    • 48 hours of going ”dark” is going to accomplish jack shite but a couple of petty articles mocking how people couldn’t even survive more than 48 hours without their Reddits.

    • Popular subs extending their protest will be taken over by Reddit and be reopened to the public. Deleted subs will spawn substitutes. For every mod refusing to mod, there will be probably 100k nerds fighting over to do it. Everything is going back to business as usual.

And yeah, I’m sticking to Kbin, but I still see many issues that will prevent this whole fediverse-thing to attract or retain enough users to even make Reddit look behind. Hopefully with years of refinement this concept can provide the kind of easy access to info and communities that Reddit offers, but right now it’s very empty and not user/casual friendly.

    johnthedoe,

Watching the live stream of subs going dark made me remember just how many people are on Reddit. This is mass public. Old, young, tech savvy and illiterate.
I worry after this protest it'll be business as usual for 90+% of people on it.
I'm hopeful the people who left and came here or other platforms are the people that will spearhead a new community to attract the rest of Reddit's very broad userbase.
We've been burnt too many times by greed. We need to make decentralization stick this time.

    aha20395,

Right there with you if the core subs can be translated over here then kbin will grow just like reddit did.

    autumnplains,

behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally

Not sure if this is just spez talking about himself, not the Apollo dev. I also love that it also then adds like a "how dare they release the tapes proving me wrong". Maybe they wouldn't have to if you didn't try to pull this shit. Honestly it does sound bad in the recording with the contextual areas removed, but with full context you can see a point was trying to be made via a hypothetical about how if reddit truly believes these API prices are reasonable, such an "investment" by reddit would be considered a financial win for them. But its not, because the API prices are unreasonable and they know it. And spez fully apologizes in the call for misunderstanding, yet ignores that when he brings it up later. Scummy.
