I'm thinking about re-enrolling in the #AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and joining a local #RC#club.
There aren't any RC #airfield's [sic.] particularly close to me, but not too far away, either. All I really want to do is dink around with a little park flyer, but people are way too scared of even the most pedestrian #UAV's [sic.] these days, and you really need some kind of air field to fly in, whether a formal one, or just a literal field out in the boonies.
At this point in my career, I’ve spent more time in public service than as a founder of an early stage startup (what I did in my past life). Most folks here in the US mostly know me for my work in government; folks back in Asia know me more for my startup work.
For the last 4 years I have been San Francisco’s director of product management, including through early pandemic wild times. I have a lot to share about this work but am unsure where to start. So ask me anything!
@skinnylatte I’ve been making my way through Jenn Pahlka’s excellent “Recoding America” and she says people have this misconception that if we just moved legacy services off COBOL mainframes and into cloud services written in modern languages things would be better. Her experiences taught her that oftentimes the issues are just as much policy as they are infrastructure. What has been your experience in San Francisco re: disentangling policy vs modernizing infrastructure?
@kjcl Thanks for the question. Very relevant. I always say that the problems and challenges in our space are not often technology challenges. It’s mostly process and policy. While there is important work in modernizing infra, doing that alone (especially outsourced) isn’t necessarily going to bring about improvements if the people aren’t on board.
@jynersolives I found I was fascinated by the concept of it. I think George Lucas spent a lot of mental energy trying to manufacture a twist on par with the Luke/Vader reveal, and Jar Jar was it. He just overplayed his hand. He thought Jar Jar was going to be beloved as the first CGI character, but the audience hated him. I envisioned a Kaiser Sozé moment type reveal that never came.
@notabene vue l’absence de fibre et l’ADSL famélique chez moi, j’avais pris l’offre 5G d’un concurrent qui fait aussi dans le béton (ne connaissant pas l’existence de celle que tu évoques). Ça marchait pas trop mal.
@SrRochardBunson and you could join sdf commode chat
(are you on sdf.org ? If you need to make an account first, please let me know the name)
the live chat is normally pretty interesting, definitely anything clever I say was me reading from everyone. I would be very interested to learn more about you and music and your collaboration.
(Other than the climate crisis, we also do some kind of sm0lnet and LISP community news basically)
@thecalchemist how do you get sourdough bread to be all fluffy at high altitude? Actually all my baking comes out so dense because the bubbles pop before they fully bake.
@Tutanota Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag! 🎉 Thank you for the thorough and open answers. Solid comms. I'm looking forward to everything you all've got cooking.
I grew up in rural Arkansas, and my dad built a shop in the backyard and fixed wrecked trucks. He was often spraying various kinds of enamels so I associate those with childhood. Lacquer thinner, and gasoline are also nice.
Also, our well water had a sulfuric component which most would call "rotten egg" but which I call "home".
