“Instead of seeing the ocean as a “solution” for climate change, we need to see it as a test of a new attitude to our planet, one that doesn’t treat it as a combination of universal rubbish bin and exploitable resource. Ask not what the ocean can do for you, but what you can do for the ocean.”

My piece in the Observer today, about the growing attitude that we can just “use” the ocean as if it’s not doing anything useful to start with: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jun/04/why-we-need-to-respect-earths-last-great-wilderness-the-ocean

knew about the Gaia theory, but haven’t heard about “Braiding Sweetgrass” - thanx for the tip !

by the way, as I just saw the movie a few days ago, beside the Hollywood clichés & usual violent action, James Cameron is transmitting quite well the messages of -connectness and the need of protecting the oceans & the planet

@helenczerski we need to start with a global ban on destruction and exploration of international waters and seabed and declare the global high seas a global preserve, much like the Antarctic treaty system or outer space treaty. No deep sea mining, trawling, drilling, fishing or whaling in intl waters.

We also need to realise that we are one species among countless others who rely on the interdependence and precarious balance that makes life possible. We cannot and have no right to disrupt this for either ourselves or any other species. We have no inherent right to exploit the ocean in a way that does so. We must stop, look, and think before we tread, and when we make our move, we must tread with care.

When I dive, I make sure not to smack into the reef or grab the first thing that I see. It's understood that we don't disturb the reef and leave no scar on the reef from our visit. Why is it different when people are not in dive gear?

Thought I'd pop this in this thread. Seems appropriate.

"I'm just trying to give an idea of how over-the-top hot the North Atlantic is right now. This makes no sense, and yet it's happening."
