Australia's Great Barrier Reef hit by record bleaching

> Australia's spectacular Great Barrier Reef is experiencing its worst event on record, the country's reef authority reported on Wednesday (Apr 17).

> Often dubbed the world's largest living structure, the Great Barrier Reef is a 2,300km-long expanse, home to a stunning array of biodiversity including more than 600 types of coral and 1,625 fish species.

@HistoPol @Seruko @raymondpert Muskian/techbro longtermism and the whole mtiplanetaru species thing is so utterly. Utterly toxic I don't even know where to begin. I just wish we could give those people their dream and make one last rocket to yeet them all into the cold, dead void of space.

    "Our economic activities have so much impact—building streets and dams, radioactive waste, plastics in the ocean—all the things created through our economic activities under capitalism have such a profound impact upon the entire ecosystem. So, there is no nature as such anymore. Everything is mediated by our economic activity. This is the new age of Anthropocene. We are transforming nature. We are transforming the planet."

    We line up and make a lot of noise about big environmental problems like incinerators, waste dumps, acid rain, global warming and pollution. But we don't understand that when we add up all the tiny environmental problems each of us creates, we end up with those big environmental dilemmas. Humans are content to blame someone else, like the government or corporations, for the messes we create, and yet we each continue doing the same things, day in and day out, that have created the problems.

    Sure, corporations create pollution. If they do, don't buy their products. If you have to buy their products (gasoline for example), keep it to a minimum. Sure, municipal waste incinerators pollute the air.

    Stop throwing trash away. Minimize your production of waste. Recycle. Buy food in bulk and avoid packaging waste. Simplify. Turn off your TV. Grow your own food. Make compost. Plant a garden. Be part of the solution, not part of the problem. If you don't, who will?”

    Degrowth is the only hope

    Imagine a world where you work three or four days a week. In your free time, you play sports, spend time with loved ones, garden, and engage with local politics. Overnight shipping, advertising, private jets, billionaires and SUVs no longer exist, but health care, education, and clean electricity are free and available to all.

    We must massively reduce our energy and material consumption to have any hope of saving our environment.

    https://grist.org/looking-forward/the-growing-popularity-of-degrowth/

    Syulang,
    @Syulang@aus.social avatar

    @elmyra @gerrymcgovern My view is that is inevitable and unavoidable simply because infinite growth is literally impossible and always has been.

    The question is thus not "Should we pursue degrowth?" but rather "Do we want a managed and organised degrowth, shaped and influenced by human society and our democratic wishes. Or, do we wait for catastrophic, uncontrolled degrowth dished out by natural forces that neither knows nor cares of our collective hopes, dreams and aspirations for society?"

    If we have any concern whatsoever for bodycount, we will go with the former.

    WTF Starlink?

    https://www.space.com/spacex-starlink-satellites-deorbit-space-sustainability

    So it begins. Critics like astronomer Prof. Sam Lawler @sundogplanets have been calling attention the many horrible aspects of Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink system (https://theconversation.com/an-astronomers-lament-satellite-megaconstellations-are-ruining-space-exploration-215653).

    Perhaps the greatest threat is for a Kessler Syndrome event, wherein these terrible little satellites, lose control and start smashing into each other, creating a cascade of destruction that closes off space for generations.

    Syulang,
    @Syulang@aus.social avatar

    @amgine @mastodonmigration From ~500km, you're look at around 10 years for orbital decay to drag them down, and during that time if they knock out something else, that will start it's own decent journey, so things quickly get exponential.

    Longer term the real concern that really hasn't been addressed is the atmospheric pollution caused both by launch engines themselves (which are absolutely filthy and wildly resource intensive) and by the burning up of debris both in launch and disposal. There are large quantities of metals, plastics and propellents being burned in a completely uncontrolled manner in the upper atmosphere, at quantities which are already having a measurable impact on the atmosphere itself. The more junk Elmo yeets to orbit, the worse this is getting, and there is zero long-term plan for managing any of this - indeed, the plan such as it exists at all is explicitly to use our atmosphere as completely unfiltered, uncontrolled incinerator.

    The fun doesn't stop there as the ISS operates around 400km, below the Elon Zone, so all the shit he creates will impact on the ISS, as well as the numerous other essential missions that need lower orbits.

    #SpaceX #Starlink #ElonMusk #SpaceKaren #SpaceJunk #SpacePollution

    Syulang,
    @Syulang@aus.social avatar

    @mastodonmigration @amgine @artemesia This. Atmospheric density does not change linearly. The difference in decay times between an object at 400km and the same object 500km is much greater than between 1000km and 1100km.

    Amgine cited 16 days as a decay time, which is far below that of Tiangong for a vast heavier object and much lower altitude (as stated), and is even below that of the GOCE satelite, which was in an 229km orbit when it used the last of it's station keeping propellent (another example of a scientifically valuable mission that needed LEO - it had to fly so low in order to get the best possible data). Even at 229km, it took three weeks to deorbit, and contribute it's 0.9 tons of metals and plastics to the upper atmosphere.

    Syulang,
    @Syulang@aus.social avatar

    @mastodonmigration @amgine @artemesia - So, 200km is the new 500km when it comes to claims of rapid orbital decay...

    Syulang,
    @Syulang@aus.social avatar

    @mastodonmigration @amgine @artemesia I agree. SpaceX does "Scienciness" in the same way the Bush Jr. government did "Truthiness". It's not legitimate, real, science communication or explanation of their rocketry, but it sounds a bit like it.

    Syulang,
    @Syulang@aus.social avatar

    @Eka_FOOF_A @mastodonmigration @amgine @artemesia Starlink are using orbits ~550km, which makes 10 to 15 year decay times pretty much on the mark, while deorbiting thousands of piece of dead spacecrap by incinerating in the upper atmosphere is wildly unsustainable and ethically unjustifiable when the whole purpose is nothing but personal profiteering.

    Today, I have to make the long trudge down to Sydney. I find the city really hard to handle. The concrete, the disturbing taste of the air, the crowds.

    But there was a mob of roos bounding along beside the train for a bit as we twisted and turned through the forest, the mountains, the mist and a gentle summer rain.

    That makes my heart happy, and I know I have a safe and beautiful place to come back home to, where I belong.
