The suggested follower experience appears to work. I made one single meaningless post right when I created the account, engaged basically with nobody, and I have 49 followers.

What can we learn from that in the ?

@GregCirillo I know many of these unexpected followers, and presumably they know me. I appreciate the follow from those people.

@J12t Bluesky is new and people are hungry for others to follow?

I'm a little confused about why you come to the conclusion that suggested follower experience works. You get followed so that means it works?

How about on the other side? Have you followed any suggested accounts, and what has the experience been? Were they good suggestions? That would be interesting to hear about too.

@cstanhope I have very little experience myself because I haven't really used the app! If I ever do, I will post about it.

Anandu,

@J12t @cstanhope Can I get an invite code?

@J12t

I had a similar experience.

    @jeff Oh absolutely it would be possible to build something similar in the Fediverse. IMHO it would be very useful, but would have to be in the main flow of the onboarding experience.

    1. Let's try out this new Fediverse thing.
    2. Ohh, all my friends are here.
    3. I'm happy.

    @J12t That's just weird. It means that Bluesky is juicing your numbers. Do you think Mastodon should start automatically signing users up to follow meaningless accounts? Wonder how the the 49 Bluesky accounts that have now been assigned to follow your meaningless account feel about it?

    J12t,
    @J12t@social.coop avatar

    @mastodonmigration Not meaningless followers. Many of those followers are people I know.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @J12t Sorry. Wonder how it knew who you know?

    @J12t I might like to learn a little bit more about how that worked. Did it make suggestions based on your bio? Do you think your followers have aligned interests, are they randos, are they pornstars?

    J12t,
    @J12t@social.coop avatar

    @John Not randos, many people I know and appreciate the follow from. I suspect it's from affinity in the social graph of the people I decided to follow myself.

    John,
    @John@socks.masto.host avatar

    @J12t That's interesting to know. Probably an especially connected group.

    A shot in the dark, but you don't happen to have a spare bluesky invite to DM me would ya?

    Figured i'd ask.

    @J12t @markigra that it helps to have tens of millions in seed money 🤷‍♂️

    @Cassandra That should lead to a negative follower count, no?

    Apparently not.

    eob,
    @eob@social.coop avatar

    @J12t How does that suggested follower experience work on bluesky? Does it ask the new user for topics they are interested in and finds large-follower accounts that match?

    J12t,
    @J12t@social.coop avatar

    @eob I didn't pay enough attention to the original onboarding I'm afraid. Right now, it suggests one person to follow because somebody I do follow responded to one of their posts. I think :-)

    loathsomecowboy,

    @J12t Keep the bots out.

    beckett,

    @J12t No need to imitate BlueSky then.

    J12t,
    @J12t@social.coop avatar

    @beckett I didn't say imitate, I said "learn from". It's my experience that the best learnings come from your competitors.

    beckett,
    @beckett@social.coop avatar

    @J12t IMO getting 49 random followers is a bug not a feature. I don’t want that here.

    J12t,
    @J12t@social.coop avatar

    @beckett Actually my unexpected followers are not random. Many people I know for certain and I appreciate them following me (although I haven't decided at all whether I'll be using Bluesky)

    beckett,
    @beckett@social.coop avatar

    @J12t What’s the data source for those matches?

    J12t,
    @J12t@social.coop avatar

    @beckett I do not know. If I had to guess, it would be a social network affinity score which would work in the Fediverse just as well.

    @alto @beckett It's not. There are all sorts of reasons why all sorts of people prefer the Fediverse, and they rarely agree on what they are, so "the reason" IMHO cannot possibly exist.

    In my case, I want computers to do work for me that I then don't have to do. What I don't want is being manipulated. So I want algorithms to simplify my life, as long as those algorithms aren't controlled by other people who have objectives at odds with mine, which is what FB and the like does.

    @J12t @alto And there’s the rub.
