Way to miss the point, Wired.

Meta's metric is "engagement" and "time spent". I don't think anyone disputes that these algorithms increase these.

The argument isn't even necessarily that algorithmic timelines are fundamentally bad, but that what they do, for the sake of profit, is unhealthy.

Personally, I wouldn't mind a view on here with a selection of what I missed since last time, of the stuff I follow.

@veronica what we are fundamentally talking about here, is a processing surface area problem.

I Don't care how brilliant a person is; it is not possible to process all the content put out there by more than 1000 people in a day.

Okay, but they are not all content creators you say?

Then why are all their accounts the same?

Sure different folks create different content. For some silent types it's just likes and bookmarks.

The fundamental model of social media since early 2000 is unrealistic.

@veronica I remember Twitter used to have a “you might have missed this” kinda thing before going full algorithmic timeline.

Gotta admit I didn’t like it at the time, but the idea isn’t bad.

@veronica I like the chronological feed precisely because it allows me to get to the bottom and close the app

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@tedward Same. I also don't mind if I don't read everything. Some days I don't check social media at all. 🤷‍♀️

ctbk,

@veronica @codinghorror For that reason, I built Quintessence: https://quintsns.pianeta.uno
It does its job, but I think this kind of feature should be offered by the instance itself, and should be tweak-able by the user.

@veronica one of my massive dislikes about Mastodon and in general microblogging is that it’s way too easy to miss posts, especially when the app really wants to send you to the top of your feed. A summary of popular posts or really just the ability to turn of reblogs in your feed (in the app) would be very nice

@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@benjistokman People sometimes get real FOMO from being on social media. I don't get it, because there is no way you will know everything going on anyway. I read what I read when I check in, and the rest is history anyway. 🤷‍♀️

@veronica I appreciate you sharing your perspective after reading the article. Sounds like one I should read, too

@veronica I'm really looking forward to have a Mastodon client with a customizable algorithm.
Still too lazy to wtite that, though.

@veronica by Wired’s logic, people LOVE prison. In fact, a study from the prison showed that by putting people in the prison, they spend a lot of time in the prison! Take that, abolitionists!

veronica,
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

@cassidy Hah, yup. And the study was of course funded by the prisons themselves, so they picked the metric.

@veronica Jeg har typ 6 apper knytta til mastodon. Bruker en som hoved, veksler mellom å stikke innom de andre for å se på forskjellige punkter i tidslinja😂
