There's an elliptical in my garden,
I don't know why it's there.
It showed up one day unininvited
From someplace who knows where.

Though wildlife may range free
Across the fields, hills, and dale
This exercise equipment there
I think might be just from a yard sale

It sits among my cactus and my trees
Right there next to the garden bench
Although it might be pretty there
It's your for free, just bring a wrench

(human)
ps. not mine, but felt inspired by the photo. LOL.

Superb thread here in which @shauna posts her notes from reading Jessie Singer’s book “There Are No Accidents”

It’s about how corporate interests create dangerous/lethal products — from automobiles to addictive medicines and more — then capture the regulators, so that reasonable precautions around their use are tossed out …

… then, when people are injured or killed, they say, “whoops just an accident”

Read the whole thread!

resing,

@clive @shauna reminds me of an incident while riding in a back cab in London over the break. A scooter passed in the right where there was no lane and at some point the scooter and the cab bumped into each other (lightly). The van pulled over, the driver and rider had a quick chat, then he comes back in, pulls away and says cheerily “that was almost an accident!”

@ScienceGirl left Twitter before the rebrand. So glad to be off that platform. Mastodon isn’t a direct replacement. However, it’s a better place.

Five years ago, New York magazine reported less than 60% of web traffic was human while bots masquerade as people.

On days that the Internet seems particularly unpleasant, it’s helpful to remember that many of the individuals we encounter online aren’t real.

The 1906 US immigration form made this distinction between citizen and subject.

resing,

@ntnsndr this was an application for a visa or similar? And the idea is that an immigrant became a subject of what, the US government? Trying to wrap my head around what was going on hear. Kings and other royals had subjects. Have democracies?

Sheril, to climate

Many believe a significant way to address is to 'eat local,’ but that’s not always true. The impact all depends on the kind of + how & where it’s produced.

Some foods require fewer resources (water, energy) in some parts of the world. Season can be important. Overall, transportation has a much lower carbon footprint than land use change. And so on.

So instead of ‘eat local,’ let’s go with ‘eat thoughtfully.’ https://ourworldindata.org/food-choice-vs-eating-local

@Sheril I like this quote though I feel like they favor eggs over milk unfairly given their data showing milk as lower emission “substituting less than one day per week’s worth of calories from beef and dairy products to chicken, fish, eggs, or a plant-based alternative reduces GHG emissions more than buying all your food from local sources”

Support female artists, like my niece Elle Graham.

If you'd like to see her perform on Thursday at Neumos in Seattle, let me know. I might have an extra ticket.

Women are underrepresented in the music industry.
"In 2022, hit songs had 6 songwriters on average: 5 men and 1 woman." - The Pudding, https://pudding.cool/2023/07/songwriters/

Elle's playing keyboard for her friend Grace's band Mallrat and tells me the entire crew is women or non-binary.
