I'm doing another one of my little surveys, this time to see which parts of using on the desktop are the most problematic, and the various issues people are having.

I'll make a video on these results next week, and depending on the answers, maybe I'll make more videos on specific issues, either to explain these topics, or to see how we could improve.

So, here is the form, feel free to fill it out and share it around, so we have as many answers as possible!

@thelinuxEXP FYI the form does actually work, it's just slow to load. Pretty clouds though xD

@thelinuxEXP nice survey but there seems to be a small bias towards gui tools here. Especially with the question about using the terminal to set up the system. Now I know I'm an edge case, but my desktops are like 50% terminals. For example, I use bash as my file manager and don't even have a GUI file manager installed.

At any rate keep up the great work!!

@wuffish@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP Not had any show-stopping troubles, but it's not all sunshine and daisies.

My big issues:

3D/Surround audio is a pain to set up, if it works at all.

Gaming keyboards with macros and extended features like screens (Logitech G), are limited to basic operations.

Mutli-player games (mostly BattleNet stuff) are just... annoying to config. There are guides for adding it to Steam, but they're cumbersome.

KDE, just let me drag/drop stuff without a modifier key!

@thelinuxEXP I keep blathering about the initial installation process: ISO, USB stick, boot the USB, live mode, maybe turn off Secure Boot, What's a Partition?, etc.

I have no answers for that but it's still there.

BTW, @EndlessOS 6, the new release, has the best install routine I've seen. Boot the ISO, start the installer, whirl-whirl, and the machine reboots into your new OS. Flexible? Not at all. Easy? Yep.

@thelinuxEXP I think you should have added "Battery life" as a specific problem too.

@eclipseo I’m pretty sure I have the option in one of the questions?

@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I think this is a great initiative! Figuring out what is offputting to new users and providing tools to make it a little bit easier.

I've been learning and getting familiar with and plasma recently. It's generally considered to be one of the most familiar desktops for moving Windows users.

What I had most problems with is installing and configuring software that isn't in any default package manager so having guides/wizards helpers built in would be my suggestion. 😊

@min1123@allthingstech.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I feel like I poisoned the survey a bit. If I’m using a Linux distribution on x64, it’s almost always a very simple and quick setup, and everything quickly works. A lot of install processes for me are deliberately command line, I don’t see a need to slow things down by using someone’s GUI to do something far less precise.
More importantly, I use a lot of non x64 hardware, by choice, so it skews my answers, since I regularly have to fight bootloader and kernel issues.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@min1123 Still, it’s important to have these answers!

@thelinuxEXP I wonder how many non-Linux nerds would know what to make of "tiling WM"? How does adding "/ tiling WM" in any way improve the understandability of "Desktop"?

There are several other cases of jargon use that make me think this was done with quite a narrow nerd's-eye-view.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@hopfgeist If I didn’t add it, I would had a host of these « nerds » telling me « other: window manager ».

It’s not a narrow view point, it’s to make sure everyone has an answer.

hopfgeist,
@hopfgeist@digitalcourage.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I could understand "window manager", but what makes specifically a tiling WM so special?

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@hopfgeist Because a window manager could just be Kwin in KDE or Mutter on GNOME. A Tiling WM generally doesn’t come with a desktop environment attached :)

I had a pretty rough start with Linux - but because of using a PreBuilt system with custom motherboard (ACPI bs not working), custom Fans and the like. Well learned my lesson, last PreBuilt I buy. Ended with replacing the Motherboard, the Chassis Fan, the CPU Fan, adding more Fans into the custom built case (which is a sh*tshow as well) and now it runs pretty stable fortunately.

Other than that, everything else was absolutely doable with a tiny bit of research, but here as well, because of my own choices to run Arch. And I'm loving my setup now as is.
What was (and today still even is), is the Arch Wiki ofc and some YouTubers doing an excellent job in showing, describing and explaining how it works on Linux (ofc you, DistroTube and many others).

I still have W11 on a secondary SSD, just in case of, for my peace of mind (made the switch about 2.5 months ago), but if I find myself not using it for months, I think I'll get rid of it eventually.

@thelinuxEXP Can't wait for full results! I have to say that most of my problems with gaming are related to kernel anti-cheats so that is more issue with developers than Linux itself.

ta1da,
@ta1da@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I probably could have answered this quite easily a couple years ago when I started daily driving Linux. Now, I've gotten so used to finding workarounds for many things (there's almost always a workaround) that I don't even know if there is anything that I still find problematic

strigohabro,
@strigohabro@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP Using a terminal is not considered a problem for me. In fact it gives more freedom and control over the result and posibilities. There are console command, which have plenty of special parameters.

@thelinuxEXP Interesting topic!

(Un)fortunately, I can't take the survey: I personally have never experienced any issues that bug me on Linux. It runs nicely on my laptop, and it fulfills all my computer needs. 🤷

(I've probably found something annoying at some point, but if so, it wasn't an issue that I get annoyed at regularly.)

re: terminal
uBlue has tools for GUI setups. I still prefer to use the tried and true CLI solutions I'm used to from other distro anyways.

re: software
Lack of true MSO 365 compatibility sucks. There are a lot of weird corporate things that's just very MS centric. Particularly Excel.

re: hardware
For some reason my HP Laptop's AMD CPU runs very hot, fan is loud, and even then still often throttles to 300 MHz due to heat/power issues. Fingerprint is also not detected.
