mnutty,
  1. It’s important for to be on . The health of a is dependent on good reporting and the same hold for

This Nov 2022 article from the CJR indicates that Mastodon is hostile to based on the blocking of a journalism instance by 45 instances

https://www.cjr.org/analysis/journalists-want-to-recreate-twitter-on-mastodon-mastodon-is-not-into-it.php

mnutty,
  1. The story above 👆 makes the case for individual journalistic institutions to set up their own instances on . I suggested this on my linked below

Alternatively passionate individual journalists could set up their own instances if they wanted to, rather than be potentially bundled with creatures from on a giant journalist instance. That is not the only option

mnutty,
  1. Now I’m not suggesting above 👆 that go out and buy a physical server etc. There are plenty of highly affordable options out there where a service handles all the hosting etc. see the link below for details

mnutty,
  1. Like many, I continue to be disappointed by the number of journalists that persist with . I get it’s difficult to leave, but supporting ’s coffers, seems to be a particularly grim compromise for those with integrity. I’d be encouraging my employer to setup a instance to facilitate cross posting as a bridge towards

@caseynewton has a pretty solid take at the link below

faduda,

Publishers need to make the call on setting up their own servers, and they will resist it.

Journalists aren't going to push for it after being told they weren't welcome here last year (that can be disputed, but that's how they felt).

And unlike corporate socials, mastodon means publishers having to spend their own money on servers, and probably on server admins, instead of just telling hacks to open personal accounts on every app in sight.

@faduda @mnutty @caseynewton

Yeah, a couple of journalists engaged in a dog pile immediately after joining this instance, and faced the consequences for that behaviour. They then stropped back to twtr, where they and their pals carried on with that behaviour, consequence-free.

Only serious Irish journalists bother with Mastodon.

alisca,

@clickhere I greeted a journo and tried to explain CW to him. How they are so beneficial and versatile. How they can act as a teaser or a headline. And they absolutely lost it. So rude. I still check on his account: cobwebs now.

detachedspork,

@clickhere @faduda @mnutty @caseynewton and the poor, ostracised journalism instance was limited here for platforming transphobia and actively moderating against trans people, so they can get fucked. Everyone, including text based influencers, has to adhere to basic standards of behaviour. That's not anti-journalist. It's pro-fucking-manners.

faduda,

@detachedspork @clickhere @mnutty @caseynewton
It's been pointed out more than once that news outlets need their own instances. It also helps as a verification tool. You don't want to be on some VC funded jouro server full of American noise.
Maybe you'll see a house instance from RTE eventually as part of public service remit, but I'm not sure commercial news media will see it as a good use of funds unless Mastodon numbers grow exponentially.

alisca,

@faduda 'house instance' - nice

mnutty,
  1. Do you have a favorite who posts regularly on ? If so, please add a link to their profile in the comments and why you read their work regularly?

I’m a frequent reader of @anneapplebaum. Her work covers both Central Europe and America. Why Ann continued to post on Mastodon when many other faded away is unknown to me. I’m delighted she is here.

Here’s her latest, on politics which is descending into

mnutty,
  1. shows the way to organizations in establishing a presence on using their own instance

BBC will be in a far stronger position to regulate their content and brand while engaging with their readers, viewers and listeners

Congratulations to @BBCRD et al who have taken the first steps to escape and ’s thrall

mnutty,
  1. I think it's important to make the case directly to on or elsewhere that they should not be supporting a platform that is antithetical journalism

As supporters of , I think we should be encouraging the best journlists to set up shop on the network.

Here are my thoughts on the matter which you can either listen to in form or just read.

Feel free to share and crosspost on Twitter which is my intention

@clickhere

peeteepee,

@mnutty @caseynewton as the article says, journalists (and news outlets) will continue to use Twitter because of the sheer number of end users and therefore, audience. Mastodon still has a long, long way to go to get that kind of reach. Despite views to the contrary, Twitter isn't dead.

mnutty,

@peeteepee @caseynewton

I agree the gravitational force of is extraordinary. That said it is not immune to the wrecking ball that is .

There is a financial reality that overhangs which is not transparent. Despite the opacity, the ability to service the LBO financing is at question. The company may go bankrupt. Time will tell

will only succeed, if the collective persuades the best to join the network and in turn generates its own gravitational force

alisca,

@mnutty yes, it always boils down to 'identity' as a first principle. Either a instance attached to the identity of an individual journo or to the identity of a journo institution.

The rest has no chance. And rightly so.
