As Angry Staffer noted:

This is why many of us have been yelling about the dangers of unregulated AI for years.

Via Kyle Griffin:

The attorney general's office says it's investigating what appears to be an "unlawful attempt" at voter suppression after NBC News reported on a robocall impersonating President telling recipients not to vote in the presidential primary.

@Npars01 @GottaLaff Why are all the recent big tech buzzwords new ways to launder money (NFT/Crypto) or ways to launch a new Cambridge Analytica styled influence campaign while hiding all the fingerprints?

It's almost like the VC money is in bed with the fascists.

I'm disappointed that our media neither social nor mainstream seems to tying this New Hampshire apparent violation to the KKK Act to the fact that Trump is accused of violating that act along with this year's sentencing of a Republican dirty tricks operatives, Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, under it.

@GreenFire I remember it well! Yes, they should. @qotca

@GottaLaff This kind of crime doesn't require AI, they could have hired a Biden impersonator and it would have worked just as well. They way to handle it is to trace these calls and prosecute the crap out of the perps.

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@not2b I wish.

AI is easier to do though. An impersonator may ethically refuse to do this. Even if you find one who will, he can only make a few phone calls so you are looking at $5/call to pull this off. And you probably cannot even find enough Biden impersonators to make enough calls to be noticeable.

AI scales in that you can just buy more computers, and they can do each call for pennies each. Thus it is cost effective to attempt to call a large enough group to make a difference.

not2b, (edited )
@not2b@sfba.social avatar

@bluGill @GottaLaff They only need one person. They tape the guy and he records it once, and the call is sent to everyone, the same way it is done for an authentic robocall put out by Biden. And it doesn't take a great deal of skill to do a credible impersonation. That is the same way an AI generated fake call would work: one recording. A custom version for each call would cost far more.

    @PJ_Evans @bluGill @GottaLaff @not2b exactly. This argument makes no sense; No one would believe Joe Biden was actually calling them personally. Of course it would be a recorded message. So one impersonator who's willing to do it and keep their mouth shut will have the exact same effect as this. AI bullshit.

    But yes, you do still have to find the impersonator so the AI is technically easier.

    @GottaLaff I had kind of thought that the NH primary didn't matter for Democrats because they didn't follow the national party's preferred schedule, who benefits from Democrats not voting in this primary? (This is an honest question, I'm sure I just misunderstand the situation.)

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @kmccoy Not really the point here. The point here is that someone is tampering. And it's dangerous for all voters.

    kmccoy,
    @kmccoy@spacey.space avatar

    @GottaLaff I fully agree, I was just trying to understand what their motivation was.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @kmccoy To suppress the vote. To delegitimize elections.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @kmccoy Oh, and EVERY election matters. If voters are deprived, their voices become irrelevant.

    kmccoy,
    @kmccoy@spacey.space avatar

    @GottaLaff Okay, thanks. I was just trying to get a deeper understanding of why the bad actors would spend their energy delegitimizing a relatively inconsequential election that even the national party has chosen to disregard, but instead I'm getting replied to as though I support their efforts. All good, I'm sorry for intruding.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @kmccoy Huh? I answered your questions. I in no way thought you supported their efforts.

    Where in the world did that come from?

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @kmccoy As for why they chose NH, no idea.

    @trabex I named my source: Kyle Griffin. He's with NBC News

    CarlG,
    @CarlG@esq.social avatar

    @GottaLaff AI it already out there, and open-source, so banning/regulating it will not stop bad actors.

    We need to enforce laws against election interference (as happened with Douglass "vote by text" Mackey) without regard for whether the people behind them are using AI, or "old-fashioned" scam techniques.

    And this may be a bridge too far in an era of conspiracy theorists, but it would help if people had their own BS meter and could recognize something as implausible.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @CarlG Totally that.

    mastodonmigration,
    @mastodonmigration@mastodon.online avatar

    @CarlG @GottaLaff

    Absolutely. AI is just the latest scheme that perpetrators are using to shield themselves for liability for their actions. AI has become a shield for wholesale intellectual property theft. AI is also used to disguise the source of disinformation. Now we are seeing AI used to obscure illegal election interference.

    There is nothing magical about AI. It is just another computer programming tool. What people do with AI applications is on them.

    saintgimp,

    @GottaLaff The general campaign is going to be a never-ending series of these sorts of things.

    Tarkloon,
    @Tarkloon@mastodon.social avatar

    @GottaLaff The real problem isn't the AI, (e.g. they could have hired a voice actor / impersonator to read the script...,) The real problem is the dark money shit heel PAC that's probably behind this rat-fucking exercise.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @Tarkloon Which is why Staffer made a point of saying "unregulated." It all boils down to the same thing.

    Tarkloon,
    @Tarkloon@mastodon.social avatar

    @GottaLaff I get that, I'm just pointing out that real AI does not yet exist, there are still people behind every evil thing you see AI accused of lately.

    qkslvrwolf,
    @qkslvrwolf@mastodon.social avatar

    @Tarkloon @GottaLaff It reduces the number of people who have to conspire, which increases the likelihood that "enterprising" anti-social criminal assholes will do it.

    radiojammor,
    @radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

    @qkslvrwolf @Tarkloon @GottaLaff You could say that about Photoshop and photocopiers before them. Want to ban them? People really need to put AI use in the same category as other tools, because that's what AI really is. You don't blame the tool for what it's used for.

    qkslvrwolf,
    @qkslvrwolf@mastodon.social avatar

    @radiojammor @Tarkloon @GottaLaff

    It's not really AI, my dude. Generative algorithms, whether LLMs or audiovisual, are not AI.

    I use them. They're pretty great, although they use too much energy.

    But you don't appear to understand concepts of scale, efficiency, or force multiplication.

    Tell me, if you were going to be forced to be infantry, would you prefer to be armed with a breech loading single shot weapon, or a modern assault rifle?

    radiojammor,
    @radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

    @qkslvrwolf @Tarkloon @GottaLaff OK, patronising arsehole, I am very aware of what the damn thing is, I use it as well. And as for not understanding scale (where did that even come into the conversation?), the exponential learning of AI - which is its name whether your like it or not - means it will continue to improve as a tool.

    The rest of your BS response is ignored as having no bearing on the conversation.

    You're more of a tool than AI is. Muted.

    qkslvrwolf,
    @qkslvrwolf@mastodon.social avatar

    @radiojammor @Tarkloon @GottaLaff

    Lol, see, you don't even SEE where scale is a problem here. "The real problem isn't the AI, (e.g. they could have hired a voice actor / impersonator to read the script...,)"

    THAT is a scale problem. Something where the fricative difficulties of setting up the attack drastically reduce the likelihood of attack means that reducing that friction increases the scale, probably by orders of magnitude.

    Which you probably ALSO don't get.

    Tarkloon,
    @Tarkloon@mastodon.social avatar

    @qkslvrwolf @radiojammor @GottaLaff Been following AI and its rise since the 60's, so don't try to tell me what I "SEE" or don't SEE - you are not a mind reader. My point stands and it's this: There are always people behind the tech that's subverted, and ease of use and access is not the problem because that cat has long left the bag, the barn, and sidled out the gate years ago. It's not the AI, it's the people criming with it.

    bhawthorne,

    @GottaLaff I hope they catch the perpetrators and arrest them.

    GottaLaff,
    @GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

    @bhawthorne How many times a day do we say that? Sigh.
