Wherever I find right-wing violence, I find journalists getting attacked. Their hatred of journalism stems from a hatred of facts; they prefer information come from authority than reporting.

If they had their way, journalism as a profession would be gone except for the propagandists who lie on their behalf. (which is not journalism anyway)

After reading Chokepoint Capitalism, Red Team Blues, and The Bezzle, I went to the library and found Attack Surface there. So that's my next read. :)

Hopefully you have dozens more books published I can go through, because they're all so interesting.

As a lifelong, passionate @nytimes reader and occasional writer, it's dizzying how consistently awful and irresponsible its headlines, subheds, ledes, and spin about Biden and Trump have been. I honestly feel nausea and vertigo seeing headlines and subheds like this.

When the NYT starting publishing anti-trans nonsense in their opinion column, I was done.

There's something seriously wrong with these lunatics. Nothing will ever be enough for them when it comes to imposing oppressive, draconian laws related to . They'll just continue going further and further for as long as they're allowed. The only answer is to stop them now. Opposition to is pure insanity, and out of touch with the views of the vast majority of Americans. And they know this, which is why they also oppose .

@slcw

Another problem this article reveals: today's right-wing movement sees prison as a place to throw one's enemies into regardless of whether they committed a crime or not.

In other words, they want to turn prisons into concentration camps.

I had in mind Lucius Cornelius Sulla, dictator of Rome. But Putin is probably a more apt comparison.

I keep seeing the news about lunar time presented as “the Moon is getting its own time zone." What's actually happening is the Moon is getting its own time standard. The problem being solved is that time passes slightly more quickly on the Moon compared to Earth (due to General Relativity) and so the Moon needs its own time standard for precise measurements and navigation. UTC is the time standard for measuring time on Earth, and LTC is being created for the Moon.

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@dgoldsmith

Wait, time passes more quickly on the moon? How does that work? Is it something influenced by planetary gravity?

I finished reading the Bezzle this morning! Ah, it's so good.

But it ended too soon! I wanted Marty to go to the blankets and kick the crap out of Junior in a court hearing, or something.

The whole thing was a bit sad. There really is no way the justice system can touch rich people. That's how it felt.

I hear a lot of voices complain about gov't regulation saying it stifles a "Free Market", when a lot of times regulation is trying to ensure a fair market with adequate competitive forces. I'm thinking some of those voices want freedom to rig markets as opposed to actual free markets.

trabex,
@trabex@newsie.social avatar

@mike

These people don't actually understand how markets work.

In order to have a contract become enforceable between two parties, you need a third party arbitration mechanism. Then, in order for the arbitrator to not be bought off/corrupt, they need to be accountable before the public.

Any way to put it: reducing or eliminating government involvement in market activity just leads to higher prevalance of scam and fraud (ie, crypto)

“The state of scouting today is a mixed bag.

Some teams seem to be prioritizing analytics. But other organizations – like the Texas Rangers – have actually added scouts to their payrolls since 2019.

When the Rangers won the World Series in 2023, baseball scouts around the league rejoiced: The team’s success confirmed that an emphasis on personal touch and people could still pay off.”

But other teams have slashed their scouting staffs.

I once got a peek into the Detroit Tigers front office. It was overloaded with bureaucrats and paper-pushers, people who probably did stuff they thought was important but whose job probably wasn't necessary.

For reference: the Tigers have had historically bad offensive production for years now, which included signing veterans into long contracts, and then continuing to play those veterans even after they washed up in the middle of their terms.

Interesting. Can anyone test if this is a fluke.

The other day I was complaining about youTube shorts until @mcc reminded me that I could replace

/shorts/

with

/watch?v=

and avoid it on my own videos. Since then I have uploaded videos and only ever looked at or shared the "/watch?v=" links. Now all of a sudden it's not forcing my short videos to be shorts anymore. It's just putting them in the normal list!

Like they noticed the other links were not being used? A glimmer of hope?

Hmmm? Would you just watch yourself get put on the street?

There's a reason it's called the "thin blue line." It's fucking thin.

We already have digital feudalism. That is, the owners of large digital spaces don't do any work themselves, but sit back and let others do the work for them. They don't make things; they steal or buy ideas from others. They don't innovate; they worsen existing services.

They are no better than traditional landlords, except that the rent you pay is most often in the form of subscription fees or subjection to advertisement.

Serfdom is already here.

    It's sad to think the Geneva convention came about because American politicians at the time thought a war of aggression shouldn't be tolerated, especially against civilians.

    Now here we are in yet another ethnic-based genocide, just the same as always.

    It really feels like America has more power to kill people than to save them.
