In case you missed the excitement in our neck of the woods, a pop quiz on safety was failed by a poor student.

"At around 1:15 p.m., Portland Fire & Rescue crews along with the Multnomah County River Patrol and the United States Coast Guard Station Portland responded to the rescue on report of runaway 16-foot boat in the river and a man in the water yelling for help."

https://www.koin.com/news/portland/man-rescued-from-water-after-runaway-boat-incident-in-cathedral-park/

It's only May, and the weekend navy is already in fine form.

I tramp around Mount St. Helens just North of #Portland in Wa, its sort of untouched and completely changed slopes. I’ve heard how gorgeous it was prior but this OPB report gives glimpses.

I can't believe how voters keep electing the right-wing candidates, maybe the progressives moved out to Beaverton. Schmidt has gotten nothing but bad faith from the police and the republican city council isn't doing us much good either.

Also, I often cross-reference my choices to make sure they're the opposite of whatever the oregonian, and often wweek, said.

@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

lmao wweek in May 2020 "But the district attorney in the state's largest county is a thought leader and a policy leader." endorsing the candidate that was not endorsed by the police union, vs now "a technician, not a politician. That’s what this office needs"

I participated in a workshop by city of to discuss civic use of AI. I contributed a rubric of "assistive" versus "determinative". The first case may be a helpful use (subject to usual concerns about energy, creative rights, bias, etc etc etc). The second case is where things get dangerous.

Portland’s climate tax could fund energy-efficiency upgrades for 3,100 homes

Portland’s climate action fund is preparing to invest $140 million toward 3,100 home retrofits over the next five years. The goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, decrease energy usage, lower utility bills and increase housing resilience for qualified homeowners, renters and multifamily homes within Portland city limits

If you really want to transition the #unhoused to permanent housing, tiny home villages work better than shelters. Pass it on and build build build #homeless #portland

“It’s absurd for ODOT to claim that their proposed $1.9 billion 10-lane highway is in compliance with the city’s existing plans for #climateAction, sustainable #transportation investment or neighborhood development. We filed this lawsuit because state law requires ODOT to follow the city’s #cleanAir and climate goals. ODOT shouldn’t be allowed to advance a project that brazenly violates the city’s adopted plans.” -- #NoMoreFreeways #ODOTGTFOpdx #Portland

@enobacon Is there a good American state DOT?

enobacon,
@enobacon@urbanists.social avatar

@whitemice it's like asking whether there are good cops. Or to the extent that these people exist, is it better for them to be working for the state or freelancing? IDK, but the rules DOTs have written for themselves are inherently a form of violence, mostly to the tune of coercion toward car use as a primary directive.

@enobacon @bikeloudpdx i would bike Sandy (taking the lane) to work each morning, beating the early traffic, but my route home, during rush hour, was the solution to a Pythagorean equation because the direct route was too stressful.

cshentrup,
@cshentrup@mastodon.social avatar

@enobacon @bikeloudpdx at the very least, cut it down to two lanes. stroads should be banned. I live right by 33rd and Sandy and the same goes for 33rd and Broadway.

@YakyuNightOwl GPS or the on-bus transmitters/cell network? I don't think they have any wired fixed-location sensors to say where the buses are.
